That pie chart was next level :) Thanks Casey. Burnout is real for all youtubers big or small, as a smaller medium sized creator it is tough to keep it up especially when we have another job that takes up time too. Thanks for talking about this.
The irony of feeling unsuccessful with too much success. I can see how lots of RUclipsrs get bit with this bullet. They feel like if they slow down even just a tiny bit, then they're not living up to the expectations of the reward of success they've been granted thus far. Worse yet is feeling that you have to keep producing more and more just to be proportionate to the rate of growth.
I think hustle culture is okay, but people should really stop saying you should cut down sleep to achieve your goals. They treat sleep like it's a luxury when it's not. It's meant to help recover your body and mind from all the work you do every day. If you cut sleep, you're affecting your health and mental well being and to be honest, health and wellbeing should be prioritized above success.
I agree 110%. To think that reducing sleep is in any way okay is very self-destructive and among many many bad things it will cause, it might just ruin the thing itself you're sacrificing your sleep for - the chase for success.
Yup, this is the one thing I disagree with Casey on. Although I completely admire his dedication, tenacity and work ethic, not sleeping is simply reckless and detrimental to your health. Taking a break does NOT mean that you're not working hard.
Holy daaaaamn. 10000% truth in all you said, coming from a creator that literally just got over burn out and end of 2018 made videos about burn out. Thanks for talking about it Casey and making it ok that we feel this way. And yes! Quality content that we enjoy making all the waaaaaayyyy from now on! 😱😱😱

I can understand, most people feel overwhelmed. Just replace 'RUclips Creator' with 'Dad', 'Manager', 'Leader', 'Son', 'Single Mother' etc and people can find it overwhelming too. It's the nature of things, that they lose the element of wonder over time. So accepting the idea that all this success, hardship, failure is transitory and just keep creating, could be an antidote. In the end, it is a choice and all turns out well if you put in the effort. All the best to the creators!

That longevity>clout statement makes so much sense. In 10 years, people will still look at caseys legendary bike videos, snowboarding with NYPD, but will they watch ricegum playing fortnite? Probably not.
I think I have fallen out of love with RUclips, I am ashamed to admit it. creating and even watching my favorite creators isn't a daily thing for me anymore. Kinda want another platform to pop up and take over already.
Been on it since about 08/09, I was looking at my watched videos history, I still prefer stuff from like 6 years ago, seemed to have peaked then before corporations took over. There were still people doing vids in their bedrooms, rather than a bedroom set in a studio in a corporate headquarter.
Totally agree with this! Longevity is definitely what it's about, and so is diversification. I run three active channels of different sizes, ages, and content, and it is so fulfilling and has allowed me to still do RUclips some 8 yrs later. Keep championing RUclipsr life for all of us, Casey! You're the GOAT! 🙂🙂🙂
I'd love if Casey talked about social media/youtube/entertainment addiction. I think its an important issue for viewers. Some entertainment can be good, but it can be easy to consume so much of other peoples' content to the point where it hinders you from living your own life/creating your own stuff.
Empathy is perhaps the most taught lesson from parent to child: “Put yourself in their shoes” is what a lot of kids hear growing up and it teaches them how to be compassionate. The problem is that empathy is generally suited for those less fortunate, so how do you empathize with someone who is rich/successful? ‘They have everything they want, why should I feel bad for them?’ There’s a disconnect there that isn’t easily fixed, and when you’re pushed into this circle that people deem “successful,” you can’t vent or rant like you used to because now you’re “complaining” and “ungrateful.” It’s a very mentally draining process to be told your problems aren’t real problems all the time, and it starts to wear you down after a while. I haven’t had to deal with this, but after watching RUclips for years it’s clear this is what burns creators out: the dehumanization from just a content creator to a “successful person.”
I've been binging on your videos lately and this was some of the most real talk I've heard in a bit. Keep crushin', man. You're inspiring those of us just getting started.
Hey Casey. Burnout is something ALL self-employed and entrepreneurs must deal with. It doesn't matter what business you are in, it's too easy to push and push and push yourself to do more and more and more. Finding the balance is a continual challenge. Saying NO is difficult.
Jesus Christ thank you finally, somebody understands. Everybody is going through this burnout at one point, but youtubers can make this way more obvious through lack of (quality) content
the problem isn't that people think youtubers don't work hard...i think people get into youtubing because they think it isn't hard work...and are dissapointed when they realize to be successful, they still will have responsibilities and need to work hard.
Great video ! Especially because your words also apply to multiple kind of business. That’s one part of why I appreciate with your videos Casey. It’s inspiring because even though i am no youtuber (and don’t intend to be one), your experiences and leitmov can expand to so many situations, lifes, jobs ! Thank you for being an inspiration. Had to get this out :)
I agree 100% with the over glorification of the hustle mentality. I'm not against it. I'm all for it. I think there also needs to be an equal amount of glorification for rest and self care so you can be effective for that hustle.
i have to say that i am liking the beard casey! also i like when you address things like looking after your mental health, people need to hear it. thanks for another great video and the motivation.
Quality leads to longevity. Thank you so much for sharing this Casey! Also, I REALLY miss your short films. Love seeing updates of your life and career but I also love your creative film projects.
As a full time "RUclipsr" who is reluctant to use that term.... this is right on point. I've been lucky to have success with in a very specific niche (aviation). I work hard to create high quality content, and at best can upload 3-4 times per month - no way I could ever approach daily. The pressure to break through and keep reaching viewers when the signal to noise ratio is SO high on this platform is exhausting.
Burnout is not unique to RUclipsrs, and everything you've said here applies mutatis mutandis to every other profession. As a lawyer, I would see burnout all the time (and may have suffered from it myself). The major difference with RUclips burnout is the added pressure of the *public aspect* of RUclipsr life. I worked at a big law firm, and when lawyers got burnout, you wouldn't really notice they were absent. But with RUclips - it's a public life. Your break is necessarily noticed *by everyone* - and I think it's that added public aspect of the burnout that makes it worse for RUclipsrs. All that to say - be well. You only have one mind and body, and no one is going to take care of it if you don't. Peace!
Hey bro, did you strategically and meticulously choose those words? Then attempted to string them together like some kind of verbal painting? Or is your vocabulary low key dog shit?? BTW just checked your channel. Content is dope :)
I love the work ethic Casey. I grew up on a farm, and I’m a fisherman, I work hard everyday. I only recently started YouTubing, and I busted my ass teaching myself how to video edit this past winter, and I’m loving it. I started from nothing, 0 subscribers, and now I have 150! It’s nothing, but I am proud!
I've consumed/ absorbed 2 and a half years of your content, in the last 4 months. I've learned a lot from you. I also think it's great that you spend more time with your family now, that you've eased the pressure off yourself to post so frequently. Best wishes for your long game. I'm looking forward to seeing the videos you've posted since this one.
We've been doing RUclips for 2 years, we just hit 1,000 and coming forth to say that burnout happens at any level is difficult, but having a huge following it must feel like you HAVE to keep going and you CANNOT take any break, which leads to burnout eventually. This is very powerful Casey, thank you for sharing :)
Well PewdiePie is making videos every day and he gets millions of views beacuse he started doing what he likes instead of thinking what audience needs, like 80% of youtubers do . Casey is the same . Two of my favourite ytubers , i hope they continue doing what they most like , what they enjoy , thats why we are subscribed to them in the first place.
Did anyone notice the background music which is damn awesome? In the onset of the vedio it has been played by Casey in a high volume and then gradually it's reduced. My penchant for it is extraordinarily high
They are pathetic most people feel that way about things just tell the subs you feel that way and post a short video talking about what's coming up in the future and then go back to the easy job lol
Stop using the waaaaay over used presentation technique of scrolling down adding "read more" so people have to go to a second page as if you are making a wondrous announcement of something you discovered. Usually it isn't wondrous nor clever and everybody uses it. Immature and tiresome..
I’ve seen this before. Probably when it came out. I’ve been rewatching a lot of your videos and this one was perfect for my current frame of mind. Thank you. Huge fan Casey. Happy you’re enjoying life with your family.
The article and your thoughts on it are very articulate. I’m a professional photographer and experience all of the issues discussed by you and the article, yet all I get is “you’re so lucky to work for yourself”, they don’t realise I work literally all day and night every single day with no holidays, sick pay or the ease of mind that working for someone else comes with. My friends that work for others simply do not realise that even being able to walk out of work and not have to think about it until the next day or the day they return from holiday is a massive benefit they get from it. Another good video mate, it really echoes many of the things I’ve felt for the last 12 years of self employment.
Watching your vlogs is motivation for me to believe that every small action I do is taking me closer to achieving my goals. especially when you put out vlogs like these
I burnt out after 6 months of weekly uploading and had to take some time off. I can't even imagine how you did 3 years of daily uploads... Keep it up, you're the one that inspired me to pick up a camera. 3 years ago I felt lost and alone in my freshman dorm room, but your videos motivated me every day. Forever thankful for what you do Casey
I love how real you are in your vlogs and transparent. Hard work is key to all success, so true. Keep up the amazing work. Also I see that OG Gameboy on your desk. Getting into some Retro-Gaming?
I have been a creator for just over 9 years, and full time for 4 years now. Like any job, it's a hard balance. There are days you love it, and days you don't, and that's okay. I think RUclipsrs forget that we are still just normal people, and this is our career, and even though 95% of the time we love it, there is 5% of the time, we are still just humans and need a break, or want a change, or need a new creative outlet. And that's perfectly okay!
Hi casey thanks for sharing I know this will be lost in the hailstorm of comment but I appreciate what your going through. “How well I know with what burning intensity you live. You have experienced many lives already, including several you have shared with me- full rich lives from birth to death, and you just have to have these rest periods in between.” ― anais nin
Casey would love to shadow someone on your team in NYC. If possible, would love to interview someone..even if its not you...dont need money, or for you to buy anything
I imagine he puts his pants on one leg at a time and shirt and jacket on one arm at a time. So my guess is Casey. Now WHO picks out his wardrobe, that might be the question?
Great video. It's important to pace yourself into a schedule that is manageable and keeps priorities top, no matter what amazing opportunities come up. Two years ago I uploaded 4 times a week and it was so rewarding but also too tough for me to sustain. Last year I was scared to stop that and upload once a week but because of priorities and potential burnout that's what I did and it's actually worked well for me. Be aware of what you want first in life and maintain it, in the end it produces more reward than people pleasing or being forced. Thanks Casey.
This is 100% how I feel about YT burnout & my feelings on working hard. THANK YOU for putting into words what I've been feeling personally Casey! I changed my YT schedule & content ideas a few months ago to fit what truly makes me happy as a creator/avoid burnout, and it has actually improved my channel stats overall. I'm glad you're doing the same!
I'm not disagreeing with Casey but Pewdiepie uploads every single day even after gaining a lot of subscribers but maybe its because that Pewdiepie's content doesn't target longevity and focuses on relevancy.
@@BigHenFor yee but ain't Shotton of people enjoy good fast food from time to time :) tbh I like his more serious vids like bout books and other reviews
Thanks, Casey!.. had a really warm and transparent feeling, while watching this - inspiring to keep up the volume of work AND to be reflective/have a perspective too. Appreciate it!.. Best, Li (Heart of Infinity)
Casey, as a fellow content creator I fully understand where you’re going with this commentary and the under appreciated epidemic that is ‘RUclipsr burnout’. Thank you for bringing it to the attention of a much broader audience than that that the article alone could hope to have reached.
This has been one of my favorite videos from Casey in awhile! The music, tone, pacing all helped deliver a message that is relevant probably for a lot of people, but def for me as a creator in other spheres.
Your videos have a lot more heart now. I recently resubscribed and don't mind less uploads when they seem less frantic and more of a thoughtful talk. Good job Casey
One of your BEST Casey! I upload three days a week & teach at university in Japan four days a week. I feel the BURN. But what you did Casey for 2 years of daily vlogs was amazing commitment & your 10 Million Subs and Success is very well deserved. Thanks for the inspiration & from a father with grown up kids; Spend time with small children as they grow up. That's what life is all about.
hi Casey! much love from the Philippines man! ive been watching you for 3 years now and its because of you i started my own channel recently. facing dilemmas on what to do and what to upload. But you inspire me not to give up and keep trying to think of what to do. From vlogs to covers to reviews im still trying to figure out what i want to do. So dont stop doing what you do because you inspire millions and im sure you do your best for us! thanks a bunch man much much love! We all appreciate what you do dont think otherwise!
Casey - Just started making personal growth videos, and this video from you really spoke to me. Success can take time and can also fade, but quality lasts. Loved what you said about longevity and quality. Inspired me to really focus on that!
I'm a lot more sympathetic to growing mid-level channels with burnout because we can't just take weeks off, knowing the audience will still be there. The hustle is definitely necessary, and not a bad thing, but that doesn't mean burnout doesn't happen. I don't see burn out as a lack of scaling rewards, but more the pressures of having to work basically all the time, into the foreseeable future, without reasonable time off. It's great that Shane or Idubbbz can take two months off, but that's not the case for channels growing.
I think you're mistaking RUclips for a real job. RUclips is NOT A JOB! To put your life on the line for ad sense is a really stupid thing to do. On average, you get better pay working at McD's.
@kazoouber ツ - The context applies directly to what I said.... The sentence before the one I quoted was him talking about the 80s and 90s and then he said what I quoted... So ya *CONTEXT*
You’re a beautiful human being Casey. Much respect. Everyone, let’s band together and keep holding each other up and helping each other out! Success comes from within! 2019 is going to be amazing!
It’s videos like this that remind me why I watch all of your videos and support you’re Chanel even when the content slows down. It’s because you are a good person Casey
Creating content would be an "overload" burnout, where the burnout is created from trying to gain a higher success, while working the same repetitive job would be a "under-challenge" burnout, where you're left with no opportunity to gain success. These are two very different types of burnouts, and really can't be compared, though, the symptoms of burnout are the same.
@@aplusk3081 did you know how many take to just make one video ??and how long to edit a 10 minute content? i think you're crybabies here and u full of envy little kiddo
Both. There's been a ton of research stating that having a kid is as much of a burden as losing a close relative, and most people go through the same emotional process as they would with the loss of said close relative.
Thanks buddy. I needed to hear that about longevity. I get concerned that I don't upload enough, but I'm creating more enjoyable content at the moment rather than forcing content.
Haven’t watched you much but I have to say this was a great look into the heads of you and other RUclips people. And most of all I think everyone needs to remember everyone is human. Grats on new baby and I wish you the best of luck.

the problem isn't that people think youtubers don't work hard...i think people get into youtubing because they think it isn't hard work...and are dissapointed when they realize to be successful, they still will have responsibilities and need to work hard.
@@DustinBenton @ShyPlyr , U both have very valid points
Oh yeah yeah
Well some youtubers apply little effort in their videos. Some people pay people to edit their videos.

Keep it up, love your channel man!
heeeey flightchops! Good to see you here! Keep up the work!
Yeah what everybody else said they all beat me here
@Dag Nabbit you think so? Shouldn't it be LOW then? 😂 High S/N means strong signal, no?
Ayyyy Flight Chops!
Peace!
DR1N11 don’t do it! 😂 Jokes aside (and it was really not my intention to sell my playlist), I made a playlist of law vlogs. It’ll give you an idea.
Great words, dude.
Hey bro, did you strategically and meticulously choose those words? Then attempted to string them together like some kind of verbal painting? Or is your vocabulary low key dog shit?? BTW just checked your channel. Content is dope :)
I never heard anyone say that it's unique to youtubers.
viva takeover!!!
Same but 2 years behind you. Hope your still watching

Indeed, it warms my heart :)

Really good video. Watching this channel properly during the big lockdown. It’s fantastic. Love Casey’s vlog style.

Watching your vlogs is motivation for me to believe that every small action I do is taking me closer to achieving my goals. especially when you put out vlogs like these
Anyone else thinking my man Casey is looking FRESH.Keep smacking it Bru!

Yes, it would be so nice to have people not forget you if you don't post one day.

Well in my region there is a hailstorm outside......,.lol
Great video. It's important to pace yourself into a schedule that is manageable and keeps priorities top, no matter what amazing opportunities come up.
Two years ago I uploaded 4 times a week and it was so rewarding but also too tough for me to sustain. Last year I was scared to stop that and upload once a week but because of priorities and potential burnout that's what I did and it's actually worked well for me. Be aware of what you want first in life and maintain it, in the end it produces more reward than people pleasing or being forced. Thanks Casey.
Great topic here. "Burnout" is something i've been struggling with for years. p.s. The pie chart definitely came in handy. Thanks for the visual.

Hi
I'm not disagreeing with Casey but Pewdiepie uploads every single day even after gaining a lot of subscribers but maybe its because that Pewdiepie's content doesn't target longevity and focuses on relevancy.

Casey, as a fellow content creator I fully understand where you’re going with this commentary and the under appreciated epidemic that is ‘RUclipsr burnout’. Thank you for bringing it to the attention of a much broader audience than that that the article alone could hope to have reached.

It's great that Shane or Idubbbz can take two months off, but that's not the case for channels growing.
bro love your channel keep it up
This is exactly how I feel. Most definitely a lot of pressure when you’re trying to work towards something.
EckhartsLadder I love your channel. I love the Halo lore.

Best type of burnout compared to the normal 9 to 5 if you ask me 😮
It Came From A Box most of these youtubers are a bunch of crybabies
Heyyy i watch your switch videos
A K are you a content creator?
Creating content would be an "overload" burnout, where the burnout is created from trying to gain a higher success, while working the same repetitive job would be a "under-challenge" burnout, where you're left with no opportunity to gain success. These are two very different types of burnouts, and really can't be compared, though, the symptoms of burnout are the same.

“Being constantly tired, easily irritable, and feeling like you’re not successful”. Is Morton describing burnout, or being a parent? 😂
Both. There's been a ton of research stating that having a kid is as much of a burden as losing a close relative, and most people go through the same emotional process as they would with the loss of said close relative.
