I used to love stadiums and sports as an extension of my fascination with geography and architecture. Now I'm just sick of how ultra-corporatist it's become, with the goal of bilking loyal fans and taxpayers to the very limit they can get away with. If building a new stadium every 30 years is a sound business plan, they should secure their own financing and repay their outstanding obligations to the taxpayers. Give 'em hell, City of Cleveland.
Here are reason why Browns ownership seek to end lease: 1) from 8% to 3% event tax savings, 2) dedicated parking revenue (extra $15 to $20 M, 3) no MBE participation building requirements. Both current & new have FAA height restrictions. Solutions: 1) publicly compete current stadium refurbishment options, 2) ballot initiative, 3) peacefully protest in support of lakefront city stadium. THANK YOU for shedding light on this issue. “Dont give up the ship” “Never again”
We are one nation in federal court. It is against federal law for one state to legislate self-interest above national interest. The Modell Law does this and is unenforceable in federal court. Why is it in the nation's best interest for the City of Cleveland to have the authority to force the Browns to stay in Cleveland forever? Bottom line, it isn't. The Columbus Crew were different because Columbus had invested in the arena, and the Crew were breaking their lease. Browns aren't breaking their lease.
Another good video. It would be great if they could keep it downtown but easy accessibility seems to be playing a bigger role in stadium placement these days, especially if you can connect it with major rail transit. I guess the important point is to keep the Browns within Cleveland.
Accessibility downtown is better than the proposed Brook park site, especially if they move to the lakefront airport. ODOT already has slated the Shoreway, I-90 and dead man’s curve to be reworked in the next 10 years, the stadium right there would have quick access to all NE Ohio freeways, the rapid stations that are right there, the Cleveland Amtrak station, and even boats and water taxis. To say a downtown stadium is inaccessible is propaganda peddled by Jimmy himself
Maybe the City of Cleveland could annex the land, and take it away from Brookpark? But the best solution would be to build more land north of the stadium into the lake, then the Haslems could build their village on the current footprint, and provide a cool neighborhood that could be used year round.
It's more complicated than how you described in your video. We don't know the condition of Burke Lake Airport, it could be like CityView and end in disaster. Remember what the Walmart looks like at CityView. Also the city and county refuse to give the Browns any money for the stadium. Also the Brookpark project is part of a larger re-development plan which would see Amtrak (High Speed Rail CCC+D project), RTA and Greyhound (remember they have to leave their downtown home due to Playhouse buying it) join the project. They would build a hub at the stadium site because where Brookpark Rapid is now would be used for Hotel & retail development. Also the Ford plant could be in play. The bad news is the Berea Freeway may have to be shifted according to those early blueprint plans. The way the whole thing is going to end, is the property in brook park will likely be annexed to Cleveland. This has been done before, just look at the disaster over by the IX Center where you see signs Welcome to Brookpark, Welcome to Berea and Welcome to Cleveland in orders that don't even make sense. Because the cities have changed their geographies due to annexation. Also keep in mind Dennis Kucinich whom helped write the Modell law already said the Modell law was not meant to be used the way the city is trying to use it against the Browns. The Ohio Supreme Court is likely going to side with the Browns on this, the fact the city and county won't help with money favors the Browns. The Haslams are likely going to have to find financial partners and they already took a step in this by creating the Haslam Sports Group.
Burke is not cityview lol, cityview was a known landfill not an airport, and the city did offer money 100s of millions to renovate what they had which is what the rest of the division is doing bc those teams know theres no way there cities will pay for a new stad
The brookpark location is horrible. Can you imagine the traffic trying to get to the airport or home from the airport when a game gets out? They have already decided they are going to put it there. Let the millionaire team players pay for it
Its a much better location. Traffic can flow in all directions away. The current location will not let any traffic out -only going east. Its a mess. Its pressed against the lake with the shore way restricting pedestrian flow. The Brook park location solves all these issues.
County won’t pay a dime. They have explicitly said that. And the state attorney general wants the Browns case challenging the Modell law thrown out. If the move happens, it’s going to be totally privately funded and then Jimmy will have to pay back the city for the money they put into the current stadium.
And as a resident of the county who lives in another suburb, I really find that stance by the county to be REALLY insulting. Many of us in the suburbs pay a LOT to keep the city of Cleveland afloat, even if we don't live in the city proper. And yes, I know, we do benefit from the city as well, but it goes both ways and too often is treated as a one-way relationship. For the county to not support a suburb within Cuyahoga County, I would personally vote against any of those county officials in an election. It isn't right. The County should be focused on helping ALL parts of the county, not just Cleveland, and a domed stadium would be of huge benefit to the county. AND it would free up prime lakefront property that is being wasted on a football stadium that is used only 10-12 times a year, the rare big concert included. Imagine what they could do with the site the stadium is on as well as the waste of space that is Burke Lakefront Airport. Both totally waste what is one of the best parts of Cleveland -- Lake Erie (even with lake effect snow).
Sounds similar to the Bears stadium dilemma. The thing is, the Bears bought the land in Arlington Heights already and finally just did a deal with the taxes with the school districts. But they are thinking of still building the stadium in Chicago. Just building the damn stadium with the land you bought, the land is still on Cook County anyways.
I’m not local but have visited several times already. Looking past all the minutia, nuances, and challenges… I am a fan of the suburban stadium idea. That brings the stadium closer to the airport and in the thick of a thriving retail shopping area. (Keep in mind I’m not familiar with the public transit at the proposed suburban location.) Ideally, I would want the current stadium to be almost completely removed. I would keep anything there that carries the legacy of the current stadium, while turning the rest of the property into the coastal crown jewel of Cleveland’s sensational metro parks system. I would even consider making it a state park requiring admission to keep trashy visitors away. Now the Cleveland area would have two completely different elite attractions, one for events, the other a major outdoor gem next door the RNR HOF. Edit: my proposed park replacing the current stadium… I would consider naming it Dawg Pound State Park in tribute to the fans who have had to eat many decades of shit from this franchise and remained loyal customers.

If the Haslams want to move the team to near the airport that is fine but the taxpayers should not be stuck paying for it.
Nice video. However, I would say your comment at the end that the city of Cleveland could just annex the land in Brook Park is a bit naive. It wouldn't be that easy at all to do that. Brook Park already beat down Cleveland once before -- a story which would be a good video for you to make. In the 1990s, Cleveland was trying to force Brook Park to give up the land where the I-X Center is so they could expand the airport. Then Cleveland Mayor Michael White thought he could just steamroll over then Brook Park Mayor Tom Coyne. Instead, lengthy legal fighting occurred before a deal was reached where Cleveland gave up land where NASA is located as well as land on the north side of Brookpark Road. By the time this was all decided, however, the chance for airport expansion had passed, and the I-X Center stands to this day -- although on Cleveland land. The delay most assuredly played a role in BP America moving its headquarters from Cleveland to Chicago (after a merger with another oil company), as it delayed Cleveland getting non-stop flights to London until AFTER BP America had left. Might have been good to get those flights to the home of British Petroleum before they moved. Brook Park ultimately won that fight, and the suburb made Cleveland look bad. So to think Brook Park is going to just roll over and allow Cleveland to annex their land just isn't wise.
Where are they going to go? The Modell law would be more relevant if they were trying to leave the state. They'll end up in the new location or the city will end up ponying a bunch of money to do significant renovations to the site they are currently at. It will be one of those two outcomes

It's a unique valued experience for many NFL fans. It requires a vehicle and parking space. Some go for the tailgate and don't even make it into the stadium.
