Yes 🙌🏼 I’ve been trying to explain forever what Sosh perfectly articulated in that post! I have found that protein or moisture overload is simply a build up of one or the other, and we don’t add one or the other to fix it, you clarify. ❤

The thing is, the only thing that can add moisture to your hair is water. Everything else is just 'conditioning' the strands, softening them with a coating. There are a few things that have been proven to be able to penetrate into the strand (coconut oil is one irrc) but most just sit on top. It's confusing to most people when you insist on using the the term 'conditioning' instead of 'moisturizing' for some reason. There's a good video by Sarah Ingle titled 'Your Hair Isn't Dry... The Biggest Hair Lie | Hair Science'

Exactly! I think we've all been spiraling into using terms like "moisture" for conditioning because of everyone using these INCLUDING brands. Another thing I've been questioning recently, is if hydrolized proteins can be called "STRENTHENING" or even repairing. The repairing bit is especially frustrating because many newer bondbuilders claim they can do this, but they don't actually have any evidence.
I really hope Courtney will look this up further, as there's more & more research as well as videos & Posts coming out by actually chemists & trichologists.

I have really fine hair and never even knew my hair was wavy until a few months ago. What I have figured out for me is that I don't need a lot of conditioner. My hair is super soft, and conditioning it makes it even more soft. I started only conditioning my ends and have seen so much improvement in my curl pattern. I use very lightweight products and brush style my wet hair. I love the curlsmith volume lotion, it has been a game changer for my hair. So I understand what she and you mean about over conditioning. If your hair is not dry, it doesn't need as much conditioning ingredients. I do still deep condition it once a week, and it is more than enough for me!!

I think it’s just ‘less is more.’ If you use a ton of conditioning products you will be over conditioned, so to fix that isn’t to add more protein products, it’s use less conditioning products. Same way for over protein. Use less of those products, don’t add more of the other kind

I saw a video here on RUclips a while back about how there is a difference between hydrating (adding water) and moisturizing (essentially adding oil) in skincare products and I always wondered if the same could be said for haircare products. And the discussion in your video today reminded me of that. My hair is the kind that LOVES humidity and I have always wondered WHY? It is so amazingly full and my waves are so defined when its humid while in dry winter weather it is so flat and lifeless and almost completely straight. My hair does amazing when I air dry it but horrible if I blow dry it. It's like the longer it stays wet the happier it is. I suffer from flash drying when I add hold products. I have wondered if there was a way to keep my hair HYDRATED. In the past my hair really did not do well with products geared towards curly hair. It would get so over moisturized and greasy, to the point where a few years back I couldn't even use conditioner! I have fragrance allergies/sensitivities and almost none of the products I was able to use had protein as an ingredient. So I finally decided to listen to all of Courney's advice on this channel and last year bought a protein heavy product - Miribel Naturals powerhouse protein cream and it was a complete game changer for me! For the first time in my life I have happy normal hair and my waves are amazing! Combining the concepts in this video and the one about skincare (it was by Hyram) makes me think that maybe protein products in hair could be considered hydrating while heavy conditoners could be considered moisturizing? Or maybe we have to think of it not as hydration vs moisture or the protein/moisture balance but hydrated vs conditioned?

I do believe you can get too many proteins on your hair. I say this with FINE wavy hair, and too much protein in dry weather and I just have frizzy almost straight hair. Could this be because it is, in fact, too much conditioning….very possibly.
In humidity, a little protein helps give me definition and bounce. I also have issues with glycerin heavy products causing frizz, but I don’t avoid glycerin or protein for that matter.
I do think proteins are different, not all created equally, some are larger, some are smaller, some are adding a bit of structural integrity while others are moisturizing.
Now….does that mean protein-moisture balance is a major issue, probably not for most people. But it is a helpful tool for those who struggle with wonky and reactive hair. The bottom line is you have to find balance in products that your hair likes. And 100% agree with Shosh if you are using shampoo with a good cleansing surfactant that keeps buildup at bay, you’ll have better washdays because as all these over conditioning products buildup it just leaves you with heavy droopy hair.

I have long, fine hair and my hair is protein sensitive. It took me a long time to figure it out because a lot of recommendations you see out there have protein so I was buying these products that were giving everyone else shiny, silky hair but was turning my hair to straw. So yeah, my road was a long and wasteful one to figuring out that my hair despises protein.

  • @harmonious.balance

I don't know where the term protein-moisture balance came from. I've deduced the whole idea to elasticity and porosity. Protein does provide structure to the hair and if the cuticle has some gaps or weak areas, the protein fills it in and making it less porous. If the hair has not been chemically processed or subjected to direct heat routinely, the need for protein is very low. The minimal protein in our products takes care of it. The whole moisture overload idea really only presents itself if the hair remains wet for really, really, prolonged periods of time. I'm not so sure that the average curly girl washes her hair often enough and leaves it wet long enough to experience hygral fatigue. It is a very rare thing. I'm not so sure I agree with the idea of the hair being over conditioned. The hair softens with conditioner. I think elasticity is the tell-tale sign when either protein or moisture is off.
I think that many of us are misdiagnosing our hair. Sometimes we actually just need a cut or a trim. That takes care of the majority of our hair woes. Fine hair may suffer from wear and tear more frequently than coarse hair. I'm not so sure that means protein is needed more frequently. I think fine hair needs to be handled differently and way less product. I do agree that fine hair, even coarse hair, when sufficiently cleansed and even clarified it behaves better. Yet clarification is not a routine thing unless products that are not easily rinsed out of the hair are used.
I've been through quite a bit with my hair. I was self-diagnosing. I thought my hair was weak, so I did routine protein treatments. I actually thought my hair was fine but in fact its coarse. After course-correcting with a new stylist, I realized I wasn't adding nearly enough water to my hair. I asked my stylist was my hair strong? She said yes, but it was dehydrated. My hair is color treated and I haven't used any product with protein high on the ingredient list in over two years. Granted my stylist may do some bond building treatments with some, not all, of my root touchups. The biggest threat to my elasticity are weak ends. As long as I stay up on my trims, and routinely cleanse, and condition, I don't have any other hair thoughts, at least not with respect to my hair's condition.

I think we are starting to realize hair is far more complex than we think. Which is awesome cause I think we might get more studies on it. What I have discovered on my thick curly long hair is that it hates protein. Hates it. Especially anything with coconut. The littlest bit will turn my hair into a dry broomstick of brittle hair.
I can never get enough moisture. Never have to worry about gummy hair. And I can use as much product as I want. It doesn't weigh it down.
The problem is that most products contain protein. Trying to find protein free products is so difficult.
I don't really believe in this balance of protein and moisture. You just need to figure out what your hair likes.

100% agree. I live an extremely dry climate with fine, perpetually dry and rough hair. I have avoided coconut entirely, been very cautious with protein, but it is not enough. I now have to eliminate ALL protein - and aloe, which eliminates 99% of all deep conditioners and protein free products. I'm screwed.

Pura 'dor is another brand that doesn't use water as their 1st ingredient. I'm pretty sure there are more but that's all I can think of on the spot. This was super helpful. I have been adding protein to my hair because I had my hair had highlights back in October and I've been growing them out since (and trimming off the highlights).
My hair is corse, low to medium porosity, high density, that is wavy... I think.
But a lot of protein makes my hair feel so so so dry. So after I watched this video, I did a balances moisture and protein mask for 30+ minutes. And my curls got better. Then two days later I rinsed and did a moisturizing mask and my curls loved it. And I had less friz. And they lasted for days.
So for me, i kept assuming I couldn't have wavy hair if it is corse. So instead I assumed I must have had normal to fine hair. But I don't.... so now I'm doubting that I have wavy hair but actually more curly but just not healthy.
So.... now I have to reevaluate.

I have oil hair and I had a lot of days like you describe when I first started the curly girl method because everyone was pushing conditioning products
My first advice to you is: you’re probably using too many conditioning products because you’re clarifying your hair too often
I only clarify my hair once a week or every two weeks and that is less than most curly girls, but again, my hair is oily
I use a deep conditioner with protein after I clarify, and I use the inahsi clarifying mask with a simple planet protein elixir mixed in. Both of these products I believe were recommended by Courtney in her prior years videos. every time I try a different conditioner it’s too heavy or it doesn’t work as well but again it’s different for everyone and this is the one my hair loves.
On a regular wash day I just use a co-wash. I was using AS I am, but I have trouble finding that one. ( I don’t use any other products from this product line because it is made mostly for coarse her hair with a lot of Shea butter, which I find to be one of the culprits that makes my hair gummy, so I avoid Shea butter at all costs, but again that was something I learned after experimenting a bit).
Sometimes you can use the suave coconut conditioner instead. right now I just switched to a head and shoulders royal oils cowash that is not completely curly girl friendly, but it makes my curls amazing and we’ll see how it holds up after week
I follow up only with a curl cream and a strong hold gel and I’ve had beautiful hair with no moisture problem since
using a curl cream really helps my curl pattern but if I use any other moisturizing product, I will get gummy hair
You just need to play around figure out what works best for you
But I would start off by not clarifying as much because I think that makes your hair a little dryer and you are then over conditioning to make up for it
I follow Courtney because her hair is a lot like mine and texture and usually the products she likes I end up liking

This video is amazing by the way - so happy you brought this up. Blew my mind! I was thinking the same about glycerin. I know it's popular to translate ingredient benefits from skin to hair, but they have very different compositions so I wonder whether humectants work on the hair exactly like they do on the skin? Or I wonder if humectants on the hair just sit on the hair and lend to the product's texture, and provide light conditioning?

I was looking forward to this video, but am disappointed - it is still strongly biased toward hair that loves protein. After four years of following swavy hair methods and using very balanced products, I am not able to find any help or guidance for fine wavy hair that HATES protein, hates coconut, hates aloe, hates fragrances, and exists in an exceptionally dry and harsh climate with hard water, so no humectants either. I am desperately in need of MORE moisturizing and conditioning, not less, but with aloe and coconut sensitivities, there isn't a single deep conditioner I'm able to use. I'm trapped between a rock and a hard place.
