    We’ll soon get something similar for another game, the Banjo-Kazooie decomp is at 99% and finally started moving again after years of being stuck

      @@andresl6421 You're not getting the source code by emulating it either. That would take decompiling, which is something they haven't done with any emulated version. There's a reason it's a big deal Majora's Mask and other N64 games are only just now starting to get decompiled to source. It's usually waaaay easier to peak at a PC executable's source code than the source code on a proprietary system like GameCube or PS2.

    There was a little bit of emulation around when I was a kid. My computer wasn't powerful enough to run ZSNES, but I was able to run Nesticle and play a few games that I didn't have on my regular Nintendo, such as the non-official version of Tetris that would have been one of those black cartridges.

    I personally feel N64 games look best experienced on an original N64 better yet on a CRT.

    • @tamerkoh
      @tamerkoh Месяц назад +3

      Any old game's graphics, including pixel art games, were designed around the inaccuracies of the CRT display; with all of the colour-bleeding and such, this is why techniques like dithering worked. We weren't meant to be seeing each individual pixel so boldly, as they were masked by the colourbleeding. But, since CRTs aren't produced or easily acquired anymore, the graphics will always be in a broken state at this point, no matter how you play it. For this reason, this is why I prefer from the ground up HD remakes, that take our modern HD screens into account from the start. Higher res textures/pixel art, higher poly models (3D games), and etc. You have to do everything to make it all cohesive; just HD textures on a low-poly model looks inconsistent.

    • @Philosgamestation
      @Philosgamestation  Месяц назад

      I get that. I've only ever experienced a crt for a few years at my grandparents' but even I can tell that any games made before the GameCube era, without enhancements, will always look better there and that goes triple for 3d games of the PS1, N64 and Dreamcast era

    I'll always support emulation if it means preserving a dead game's legacy. It isn't fair on the developers to see their hard work be disposed of.

    • @Philosgamestation
      @Philosgamestation  Месяц назад +4

      I was confused for a second about the words "disposed of" then I remembered the original Scott Pilgrim situation. Yeah emulation is a key part of game preservation and extending a game's lifespan. Just imagine how much less played SM64 would it if not for emulation

    imo i think render96 is really impressive but adding all these graphical customisations loses the charm of mario 64, it ends up feeling more like a remake

    • @ssg-eggunner
      @ssg-eggunner Месяц назад

      i see this argument used all the time against those kind of mods
      it's "costumizations"
      which means it's fully optional, and never meant to be a replacement of vanilla's visuals
      so it *feels* like a remake, what's wrong with that? the graphics ARE remade, so of course it's gonna feel like a Remake Visually
      I'd argue what's more important with the game feeling like a remake, is physics being accurate or not, which in this case, they still are
      If super mario 64 originally looked like this, someone made a low poly mod, you'd have said the same thing about it
      Just simply say "it's not for me" or "it's not my cup of tea"

    I do find it fascinating that younger people enjoy older games. I do feel the classic games just have charm that the modern era just doesn't have anymore. The PC Decomp project for all n64 games feels like such a fantastic way to (re) play these games. I was playing Majora's Mask at 60 FPS, widescreen and it just feels, for the lack of a better word, a really fast version. The transitions and loading times are so uncanny. I remember trying Ship of Harkinian when it first came out. it looks like so many bugs have been fixed by now.
    Can we just sit back and just imagine an up-to-date version of Goldeneye 007 with netplay, and high resolution support for splitscreen at high FPS? Maybe even a Halo type of netplay where splitscreen players can also join online battles?

    • @Philosgamestation
      @Philosgamestation  Месяц назад +1

      As one of said younger people who wanted to play these games and managed to do so, I can't even imagine how great this all is for people who lived through the generation.

    • @tamerkoh
      @tamerkoh Месяц назад +1

      @@Philosgamestation I think it has everything to do with the game design principles, rather than the graphics or anything. For example, loot boxes, battle/season passes, etc. All of this sort of in-game monetization didn't really exist back then, aside form Arcade machine games being designed to be somewhat unfair and eat up your quarters. Before the 2010s, the games were designed to be complete experiences from the start. There wasn't any DLC or anything, which was of course a double-edged sword. Games that were released in a shoddy state stayed that way, or had to get an updated full-rerelease like say Pokemon's 3rd versions.
      I will say, though, I honestly preferred the updated-rerelease approach like Pokemon's 3rd versions. DLC is easier and more convenient, especially for anyone who already bought one of the original pair...however, if the games are just gonna keep being rushed out in a poor state to meet yearly-release deadlines, I'd rather one of those yearly-releases just be dedicated to making the definitive, polished edition instead, lol. There's no denying that Pokemon Crystal, Emerald and Platinum are the definitive versions of their respective set, and god knows many of the modern games need that sort of polish. The DLC they've been doing has all been additive, but never addressed any issues with the base game itself like the third versions before have.

    • @steventechno
      @steventechno Месяц назад +1

      @@Philosgamestation These games were so fun back then. Imagine coming home from school, and in the bedroom is a new console with Mario 64 just sitting there waiting for you. Video game rentals were a major thing that we took advantage of. Let's not forget being able to freely trade with peers.
      Gaming in that era was such a unique experience that's honestly pretty hard to replicate now.
