Sad but true. I mean vera could just divorced again but this poor woman s kid was abused & her $ that pig stole.. sorta loved Vera giving her the idea & leaving her all the money. Plus dolores didn't actually touch joe. He chased her & fell into her trap. She didn't have to help him. He was drunk hanging in a hole. She never shot him or used a weapon. I'm sure the police wouldn't have Done anything . The banker had no problem releasing her money w/ only her name on it to the husband!!

Their were so many great adaptations of kings work like misery shawshank the green Mile it so he had the real popular mini series movies in the 90s that's weren't straight gross out horror but dolores claiborne was def a popular movie & king loved bates so much in misery he not only put her in this but also a cameo but great little part in the stand in 94. Bates is the best actress & on a level w/ the male titans of acting. She does that perfect Maine accent too. King wrote storm of the century which is his only screenplay purely for tv . Not a book adapted for tv or a movie. Anyway in SoTC one character talks about how people can keep a secret on an island " like that dolores claiborne woman" lol so king shouted her out. I remember as a kid being stunned her name was mentioned b/c I actually didn't realize this was a king novel. I'm glad he got away from all the scary gross out stuff where things they adapted were oscar caliber actors & directors. Misery is the first film of his I saw that didn't feel like a king film. Like creepshow Firestarter cats eye seemed just horror grossout & cheap imo.

my life was difficult, mine and my siblings. mental, emotional and physical abuse at the hands of my single mother and when she wanted to leave the house to go to gamble, we were sent next door to our grandmas for babysitting and sexual abuse by our uncles. 19 yrs for me until i got away to college and never looked back. my older sisters time was longer. we’re scarred and feel that through counseling and good relationships made in our lives, that we’ve become better people where we can deal with our past trauma in sane ways. deal with it in a way where our own children live trauma free lives. but, you can never truly leave it behind. there are memories. what are you supposed to do with those? this movie is a catharsis. thank you for sharing asia and wishing you and all others that have survived their own private hells and come out on the other side, much love and healing. 🙏🏼🫱🏻‍🫲🏼🫶🏼

Dang, Asia. I made my other comment, discussing the movie, before I watched all of yours & BJ's outro discussion.
I hate that you went through any kind of abuse as a child.
I went through a different kind, emotional abuse & neglect from my mother. I dealt with it pretty well but those emotional, inner scars run deep.
The good news is that you became a lovely woman who's also a sweet person & a ray of sunshine in an often gloomy world.
    To paraphrase a wise lady...
"If nobody else told you (although I know you have BJ & people who do tell you), I love you."

She was resentful towards Dolores because in her mind at the time her father didn't do it to her & her mom killed her father. After that the whole town mocks her & she was bullied for being the child of a murderer. That's why she was resentful. At the end with the mirror scene and her head was shown backward, it is to show that she is actually crazy. When you are taking muscle relexant pills + alcohols, it messes up your head & possibly why she has repressed memories.

One of the best films of that year and should have been nominated and won for numerous awards if one believes in such dubious things as major awards. Disturbing as it is, it's also perfect.
P.S. That eerie image of Selena seeing the back of her head in the ferry bathroom mirror I think reflects how she has suddenly recalled and faced that horrific incident of the past and realizes she's always been running from the truth hence why she in a pseudo-mysical and metaphorical moment sees herself as running away. Brilliant.

Taylor Hackford did an amazing job directing this film. The use of two different color patterns where everything in the past is bright and vibrant and everything in the present is dull and gray is very effective. We remember things more vibrantly than we see the day to day world. Also the way the past intrudes on our day to day thoughts is represented by the way the same shot alternates between the past version and the present version.

This was one of my mom's favorite movies. My father never committed SA, but he was despotic and abusive (emotionally, verbally & physically) to every single one of us. 💔❤️‍🩹
My late mother spent a lot of time & energy protecting and defending the three of us (my late brother, my sister & I) and I still suffer from his abusiveness in his old age (he's 69 and I'm 43 years old).
I don't think I can ever watch this movie without crying. I absolutely loved every performance (Kathy, Jennifer, Christopher, John C. Reilly & David Strathairn). But I really also loved your guys' shocked reactions and words afterwards. From BJ & Asia.
I can tell the both of you absorbed it with your hearts and your minds completely. Thank you for watching and posting this!! 🙌🏽🙏🏽 I love you two too. ❤️👊🏽

Dolores definitely did set her husband up to die (although she was pushed into it and really had no other choices…and she did it to save her daughter from more abuse). And that’s why, at the end, her daughter said she still didn’t know how she felt about it all/the truth about the death of her father. When she left Vera’s party early, because Vera gave her the afternoon off, wink/wink, she bought her husband the drink, knowing that he would drink it all and be completely drunk and sort of discombobulated. Therefore, he’d unable to really see through her plans. Delores made sure that his death occurred during the eclipse when everything was dark and also when there were fireworks and lots of people yelling way out on the beach, so that no one would hear him screaming on a quiet day in broad daylight. She knew where that Old well was and that it was covered with rotten boards because she almost fell through it herself earlier. She got the idea from Vera who told her that a “happy accident” can sometimes be a woman’s best friend. And that’s when you realize that Vera also killed her own husband.

I love this movie and the novella it is based on. I’ve been a SK fan since I read Carrie back in grammar school. Asia, you are so resilient, strong and brave. My heart ❤goes out to you. I dedicate this quote from Ernest Hemingway’s ‘A Farewell to Arms’ to you:
‘’The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places.’’

Some of Stephen King's best adaptation's are not the supernatural but the personal horror, like this, Shawshank Redemption, and the green mile.

Stephen King wrote this especially for Kathy Bates. He was so amazed with her performance in his movie Misery he knew he wanted to write something specifically for her. Such an underrated movie.

Love this movie but my favorite character is Vera. I love how she’s tough as nails right to the end- but has such empathy for Delores that she cries & helps her. Then they become so close she leaves everything to Delores in her will. Great side story line.

Really heartfelt response Asia. Very touching to hear you share what you did. I survived a lot of abuse as well and witnessed abusive interactions between my parents. It's hard to endure and it's only natural for our memory to have gaps when it's just that painful to endure such horror.

Selena tried to suppress her memories of how her father abused her as a child and instead idealized her father. That is why she was mean to her mother from the beginning and did not understand her mother's relationship with her father and herself.
Another great story by King 👍
