I believe Stephen King wrote this with Kathy Bates in mind after her performance in Misery Also I recommend Gerald’s Game there’s a connection to this movie
The books were in a trilogy, I think. I used to be a big Stephen King fan....NOT number 1 lol. Dolores Claiborne, Gerald's Game and Rose Madder are the order iirc.
@@w1975b Is Rose Madder related to the other two? I didn’t remember that. Gerald’s Game is such a good book. King is one of the few male writers I’ve encountered who truly seems to grasp female characters and the separate, secret worlds they so often have to survive in. I was so impressed with the main character in Gerald’s Game and I listened to the audiobook until I had it memorized back in the day.
The Christopher Plummer character was actually invented for the movie, since the book is one of those that's basically unfilmable as it is. It's really quite a remarkable writing feat how they were able to completely refocus the story onto Dolores' relationship with her daughter in the present and make a story that's just as good and satisfying.
I agree, great adaptation that managed to keep to the point and the heart of the novel while making the necessary changes for film. I used to think Gerald's Game was equally impossible to film and was incredibly sceptical when I heard someone had done it. I was very happily surprised which made a nice change.
Actually there is a similar character in the book, hes called McAuliffe and is described as a short scotsman, hes the one interrogating her in the book. But the thing is the book is written solely with Dolores as the narrator, so we only get her descriptions of the other characters
Kathy Bates is just such an incredible talent..her range is just amazing, every character I've ever seen her in, whether a small part to starring, she gives you a totally believable persona

The love between vera and dolores made me cry. They needed each other.
Good job. I thought Kathy Bates was MUCH better in this than in Misery. I htought this was a much better film as well. Judy Parfitt was almost criminally neglected as Vera and her performance made me a fan to this day. She is still going strong in 84 episodes of Call the Midwife where she is excellent as well.
I agree about Stephen King being an even better drama writer than he is a horror writer. Obviously his horror work is totally genre-defining, but it feels like it' harder to create really compelling dramas than it is to write scary horror, and the fact that he can write a story that's told in 2 hours where you get really invested in the characters and story and every character is dimensional and layered is incredibly impressive.
Great reaction as always. You guys are good at figuring out what's happening before it happens. You just saw the great Kathy Bates in her favorite career character portrayal. I think you would enjoy her in Fried Green Tomatoes starring alongside Jessica Tandy. It's a great story and the acting is superb. Take care until next time.
You guys tackled great movie. This might have been the best adaptation of King's stories. Cast, cinematography and adaptation are brilliant. Kathy Bates IS Dolores Claiborne!
Um, no. The movie is dogshit compared to the book. That's like saying that Ready Player One, or The Martian are exactly like their books. All three books are in another league compared to the movies.

I agree with some of the other comments here: You would never be able to adapt King’s novel the way it was written. What they did by introducing Selena and the Christopher Plummer character is nothing short of amazing as when it comes to bringing King’s novel to life.
Good job, guys. This is one of my all-time favorite movies! And the reason Vera was a control freak was because she felt that she had so little control over her own life in her marriage. This movie -- among other things -- is about "empowerment."

@@misandristmayhem Its an amazing show, HBO (So you know its gotta be good!) and its about family, death, relationships and having to deal with a lot of heavy stuff. This is Kathy Bates magnum opus. One of the finest movies I have ever watched, about 25 times. The acting is over the top good. It was not a contender for awards because of the Stephen King association. Too bad. The Director provided a narrative on the DVD and talks about Fuji and Kodak film gave him the warm glow of flashbacks, and the cold gray of the present. I love both the movie and the book. The whole daughter/detective thing was created for the film. But it was a brilliant and necessary invention; since the book is a first person confession. It's also connected directly to Gerald's Game and indirectly to the Dark Tower. The book gives Delores' theory as to why/how her husband started messin' with Selena. He might have always gone that route. Most likely would have. But it started the night of the stove log... They also had two sons in the book. Vera had two kids and THAT makes the book 10x crazier. Thanks & love from New Zealand!
a Stephen King classic. the book is a little odd with the story telling style being like a police report by Dolores. PS, I still say you should watch Crossroads with Ralph Macchio after watching your reactions to the opening of My Cousin Vinny.
You don't need to justify Dolores's actions with ""self-defense". If we lived in a "civilized" society things like what happened to Selena wouldn't happen. If a man can abandon civilization like that, then a woman can to and murder itself is justifiable. Glad you guys watched this film. It's heavy but worth it. Kathy Bates should've gotten another Academy Award for this role!
I believe that in the scene where the young daughter chatters happily about tapioca pudding - happened well before any molestation truly began. After, when her grades go suddenly down and her behavior changes - is the tell that something horrible has happened. {edit} and now I've watched the rest of your commentary and agree 100%
It’s common for kids who are being sexually abused to try and be as unattractive as possible. Thirteen is also a common age for it to start. I followed the red flag handbook myself; terrible UTI’s, GI tract problems, didn’t bathe, smelled bad, greasy hair, bad grades, sneaking out of the house at night to avoid the rape, becoming a scary persona at school so other kids stayed away. I also got fat because my abuser found fat women repulsive. The shame and self hatred is unreal. I love Dolores so much because she defended her daughter. Too many moms and others blame the kid. Nowadays I try to help as many brothers and sisters of circumstance as I can. The girl who played the teenage Selina visited an abused children’s home. One girl told her when her father started in on her, she’d go out of her body like a bird in flight. That’s what Selena was doing in the terrible boat scene. Really important film.
Another major impact of abuse is disassociation, believe me, I know. You doubt your past memories, or you block them out altogether. You know you're not normal; you're prone to rages, youre apathetic or indifferent to life in general yet you feel great empathy to the suffering of children or animals; basically innocent, defenseless beings. You are self destructive, you have self identity issues, you know SOMETHING happened you, but you cant articulate it, and even worse, you either genuinely cant implicate someone because you cant remember whose responsible, or you know exactly who the perpetrator is but you cant bring yourself to tell anyone because it will blow everyone's lives apart
Just want to thank you guys for this reaction to the most underrated Stephen King movie adaption. This movie will always have a special place in my heart I love it even though it's sick and twisted and demented it's one of my favorite Stephen King stories
You guys discussing whether it was murder or self defense... it just highlights why she was the ONE case that detective could not win. She set the trap for Joe to die, but technically she didn't kill him. So how do you prove in a court of law, that she did? You can't... so she got away with it, even though they both knew she did it. That's why the detective was so hell bent on nailing her for Vera's death. She got away once, he was not going to let her get away again. This movie was such a good movie and so well done. The performances were great too.
I am so excited for this! I've seen people react to Misery on YT, but I haven't seen anyone react to this movie, which I think is even better. Gerald's Game is related, but I think the movie is skippable. Lovely reactions to a gripping film, Boys! Keep it up!
Lot of people say that - "if i ever get that way, kill me, i couldn't live that way"... But, take it from someone who's been there, and is still there, you'd be surprised how strong the will to live is even through such misery and pain.
I love this movie. I've lost track of the times I've seen it. A few years ago I think it was TBS had it on a regular rotation for months. Each time I ran across it I had to stop what I was doing and watch. Bates is wonderful.
All of the comments about the acting--and they're all understood--but one thing is missing: these two women loved each other. Vera had never encountered anyone like Delores before and she admired her for her backbone. Delores had learned to respect Vera because of her admission about her husband. They have both been victims in their relationships (maybe Delores more than Vera) but they were both strong willed women.

If you haven't seen Gerald's Game yet I think you would appreciate it (it has a Dolores Claiborne connection from both novels, even if that connection was omitted from the Dolores Claiborne film you just watched). & while it might seem out of left field to suggest this one to a couple of young men, I think you guys would get a real kick out of Fried Green Tomatoes (with Kathy Bates). Thanks & love from New Zealand!
Such an amazing film. Criminally underrated. And what does it tell you when King wrote a book just so Kathy Bates can play the title character?
41:28 - This scene is stunning. This entire movie is beautifully shot.
This review is one of your best. Nice. Good work bros!
a Stephen King classic. the book is a little odd with the story telling style being like a police report by Dolores. PS, I still say you should watch Crossroads with Ralph Macchio after watching your reactions to the opening of My Cousin Vinny.
Yea I’d say this is the only one where I call say the movies better then the book
And the audiobook is also better than the written one. Hearing her tell the story gives you another perspective
I agree, like I loved Kathy in Misery; but her performance in this is not only as good but possibly even better!
This is my favorite King adaptation by far. Glad you guys to enjoy it
I believe that in the scene where the young daughter chatters happily about tapioca pudding - happened well before any molestation truly began. After, when her grades go suddenly down and her behavior changes - is the tell that something horrible has happened. {edit} and now I've watched the rest of your commentary and agree 100%
Great reaction, guys! This is such a classic movie, and it deserves a whole new audience. 🎬
"The Last Dragon" please!! I swear y'all would love it..
Your reaction to Dolores Claiborne is one of only a handful and the only one that is over thirty minutes long on RUclips. Hopefully other reactors follow suit and react to this excellent film. 👏🏽👏🏽👌🏽👌🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you guys for doing this movie. Thank you for your empathy. 💗

No one ever reacts to this movie, so thank you so much! It's an amazing film. One of Kathy's best.
stephen king + kathy bates = pure magic
Stephen King is a genius!!!!!!!!!!
Love the scene where Vera confesses
This movie will always have a special place in my heart I love it even though it's sick and twisted and demented it's one of my favorite Stephen King stories
I love how the frame the beginning of the movie to make you think she's guilty.
A masterpiece! Saw this in the theater on opening day. First time i saw John C Reilly.
Speaking of John, check out The Promotion (2008)
This is my favorite Stephen king adaptation from a book! Kathy Bates is the best
Kathy bates is such an underrated actress her snd Jennifer jason Leigh both were terrific great cast disturbing movie great reaction thanks guys
She's not underrated, at all.
Giving you a thumbs up without even watching yet, just for doing this excellent movie.
So happy to see you guys react to this. Not enough people know about this movie and how good it is.
I am so excited for this! I've seen people react to Misery on YT, but I haven't seen anyone react to this movie, which I think is even better. Gerald's Game is related, but I think the movie is skippable. Lovely reactions to a gripping film, Boys! Keep it up!
I know I've seen you guys watch this before but today was another day I really needed a chair up you guys are good company
This out of all Stephen King movies I have seen follows the book to a tee!
I love this movie and that quote is my favorite line of the movie.
Another great, emotional, Kathy Bates film; try Green Fried Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Café!
Lot of people say that - "if i ever get that way, kill me, i couldn't live that way"... But, take it from someone who's been there, and is still there, you'd be surprised how strong the will to live is even through such misery and pain.
Agreed. It's much different when you're actually living the moment instead of watching it.
I love this movie so much. Two strong women who have each other back. It's a great cast, and acting all around.
That fuc#er of husband deserved everything he got.
Great movie, great story, Kathy Bates is incredible. Another great reaction Guys 💯👍
I love this movie. I've lost track of the times I've seen it. A few years ago I think it was TBS had it on a regular rotation for months. Each time I ran across it I had to stop what I was doing and watch. Bates is wonderful.
Thank you for this. This is my favourite movie and a pleasure to see others appreciate it too.
aww fantastic king adaptation kathy bates is excellent in the movie...book is brilliant
I 👏 fucking 👏 love 👏 this reaction. You boys got every bit of it. I'm an SK fan from way back, and this is one of my favorites. I've watched it for the last two eclipses. Eclipsie? Whatever.
Just joined yesterday my friends. Enjoying your reactions to the movies and each other remind me of me and my younger brother. And I have a suggestion for a couple of movies for you to watch and look they're from Canada 1 "He Never Died " 2 "She Never Died" great movies !!! Keep it going guys
HEY! LOVES , ONE OF THE GREATEST OF STEVEN KINGS MOVIES , KING ALWAYS DRAWS YOU IN, GOOD MOVIE . MUCH LOV
Definitely one of my all time faves and I love the book as well!
Love this movie...just hits you so hard. John C. Reilly---I totally forgot he was in this! Have you watched Gangs of New York? He's pretty good in that----excellent, as a matter of fact. Thanks for reacting to this, nobody seems to know about it.
I am so glad you watched this!! And more glad that you enjoyed it! 🖤
I'm trying to drop weight on a super strict eating plan, so as you're enjoying those snacks, I'm living vicariously through you.
Thanks so much for reacting to this film. You are the first channel I’ve seen tackle this awesome film. Both of you are always so insightful. 😎
most people praise Katy for Misery, but Dolores Claiborne had a superior performance.
I agree, Kathy Bates and Stephen King agree as well. She said in an interview that DC was her favorite career character portrayal.
I agree too.
Jennifer Jason Leigh is also a treasure!
I completely agree with everything you said at the end …. suffering a trauma at a young age isn’t an easy thing to deal with growing up … I can say from my personal experience … it royally fucks you up.
Sometimes being a b**** is the only thing a woman has to hold onto. One of my all-time favorite lines
