very thorough. thx. u know u bout to learn some shit when the video starts with a ppt.
Nice tutorial! Thanks I upgraded my ram with your help.
Congratulations on the upgrade! I'm glad I could help
Great video! Did you have to clone the original drive first or did you install windows from scratch?
Thanks! I opted to clone the drive first. I used Aomei Partition Assistant, but the drive would not boot. Apparently, Aomei and Easeus cloning software have a tendency to alter the partition IDs. If you want to clone the drive first, I suggest using Macrum Reflect.
thanks for a video how you break your laptop back cover clips
Great Video! BTW @ 0:25 The "Note" part says 'Upgrading from HDD or 2.5" SSD to M.2 NVMe...' Can You Really Upgrade from SATA to PCIE? Wouldn't the motherboard have a different controller? Can the Motherboard accept either?
The T480 accepts an M.2 caddy/adapter (link to an aftermarket one in the description), which connects to the motherboard. M.2 drives were available as factory installed options. In those machines, the caddy was required and came installed. You won't get the full M.2 speed, but it'll likely be better than a SATA SSD.
@@StevenCastellucci Thanks for the info, if I do go for the upgrade, I'll run some before and after tests (SATA vs PCIe 3.0 x2) and get back to you with the results - Cheers!
TAKE EXTREME CAUTION WHILE PRYING THE BACK COVER OPEN!
Do NOT try to pry the snaps on the front side as they are extremely easy to break! Here's a video explaining the process properly: ruclips.net/video/KTLTjCVNg2I/видео.html , too bad this video doesn't go in any detail regarding the back cover...
Unacceptable build "quality" on lenovo's part on cutting down on screws and using plastic pieces of turd instead. I'm left with 1 broken snap, right at the base fml!
Hi..I have 256gb SSD in my lenevo L480..can I add on 1 or 2 tb HDD along with SSD..do this laptop have slot for both?
No, I don't think so. Looking at the L480 Hardware Manual, it seems there is only room for one storage drive: a 2.5 inch HDD, a 2.5 inch SATA SSD, or an m.2 SSD in a caddy.
You can buy an external drive, and connect it via of the USB ports.
I have a question, my lenovo t480 original came with a 1tb hdd, i wanna upgrade to 512 ssd. What brand and model of ssd would be compatible? Sorry im a newbie when it comes to upgrades.
Probably any 2.5" SSD would be compatible. I recommend a Samsung 860 Evo, Crucial MX500, or WD Blue SSD. It's difficult to give specific model numbers, as they aren't available in (or vary between) different regions.
hey man my laptops screen is not turning on again after (i didnt change the ram i just put it back and screwed everything back together) i followed your steps pls help
Good video. You would have an easier time opening the back panel by unclipping from the battery side and not the other side of the laptop. If you unclick from the battery side you can roll the back plate out without risk of breaking the clips on the other side.
Thank you. Yes, I tried that (might have edited that out). It gave on one side of the battery, but not the other. Maybe a spudger might have helped.
My question is even if you would by a separate bracket for M.2 NVMe it would not give you more speed than the 2.5 inches SATA SSD due to not been have M.2 NVMe protocols in placed by the Lenovo Thinkpad of this older Models.
I believe you are correct, but I'm not sure. I've stuck with a SATA SSD in mine. When using the 2.5" M.2 caddy, you might be limited to using SATA M.2 SSDs, and therefore SATA speeds. There is an NVMe M.2 slot near the WWAN card, but it's shorter than typical M.2 drives (only 2242 models, 42mm long), and only has 2x PCIe lanes.
@@StevenCastellucci I know it’s hard to find M.2 / 2242 NVMe 2xPCLe lanes but if you do find it it would still be better and faster than SATA III 2.5 wouldn’t it?
Every bit of information helps and thank you but I do not see the all you are doing since not all in the camera. Would be nice if you would explain the delays needed to detach the parts if there is a trick to it.
There was no trick -- just a lot of time repeating things. I tried applying pressure near the battery, as recommended by the ThinkPad Hardware Maintenance Manual, but no luck. If I had had a plastic spudger (or guitar pick), I would have used it.
Hey Steven,
Im on the market to purchase a T480.
How can i guarantee that is upgradable to a 1 Tb PCIE NVME GEN 3 SSD and 32 RAM?
Hi, Yassine!
As long as the slots are not damaged, you should be able to make the upgrades you mentioned. Although I am not necessarily endorsing Crucial, their Advisor Tool for the T480 lists a 2x16GB RAM kit and a 1TB M.2 SSD (PCIE NVME Gen 3): www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-t480
The Lenovo forums also include discussions of 32GB and 1TB NVME upgrades, so it should be possible, as long as the required slots are not damaged.
which ssd disk do you recommend to change on this computer / Thanks
I'm using a Samsung EVO and highly recommend them. I would recommend a Crucial drive as a lower budget option.
I'd be very surprised if you didn't break some of the front clips which hold the base cover in place. You have to follow as per the manual and work from the back first. Unclipping from the back, and then finally when you've released from the chassis, the front clips can be just unhooked as you hinge away the base cover. If you do it the way you did, almost certainly you will break the front clips (hence why they show it like that in the manual).
Thank you for highlighting the care needed to remove the back cover. In my reply to VuthavadooVikshay
, I linked the official Hardware Maintenance Manual. I also mentioned the difficulty I had (that others might experience), and echoed nechcemomfg's warning about being careful along the front edge.
Can you give a link?

If you undo the 3 or 4 clips along the back of the base cover and the 4 inside the external battery compartment the base cover comes right off. Check out this video.

It's in German but super easy to follow.
Thanks for the video.
@@mikereynolds1368 Yeah, I watched that and followed this video to a tee when doing my own upgrade. Worked flawlessly. But, because it's in German, and I didn't know much about m.2 cards at the time, I purchased the wrong m.2 card because of his video (notice what m.2 he swaps out). Another German commentator mentioned that fact as well, and I eventually purchased the correct m.2 card (an NVMe one).
Hey, you missed an important part. How am I supposed to bring back the OS? ThinkPad has a hidden partition for reinstalling Windows.
The first comment (at the very bottom) asked a similar question about migrating the OS. I had less-than-stellar results with Aomei and Easus, so I recommend Macrum to clone the disk (OS, EFI partition, and all) to the new drive. Newer ThinkPads don't have a dedicated recovery partition, and instead rely on Windows's own recovery environment.
@@StevenCastellucci Thank you very much and sorry for not noting it had already been asked and the misunderstanding about ThinkPad's restoration environment. I was thinking to buy my niece a cheap ThinkPad but upgrade the HDD to SSD for her, so I asked.
@@liameneuk No worries 😊 I'm happy to help. ThinkPads are very durable and upgradable, and they're is a huge support community on Reddit. I think getting a ThinkPad would be a great idea!
can you give new link for M.2 NVMe Caddy
Sorry, I think it was discontinued. I couldn't find a similar product on the Lenovo website. You might find used ones on eBay or try AliExpress.
My question is even if you would by a separate bracket for M.2 NVMe it would not give you more speed than the 2.5 inches SATA SSD due to not been have M.2 NVMe protocols in placed by the Lenovo Thinkpad of this older Models. No wonder they’ve discontinued this types of caddy.
I need help not breaking the laptop while trying to open it after taking all screws off
Page 65 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual (download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t480_hmm_en.pdf ), shows the ideal points on the back plate to grasp and place pressure. However, I did not have success with those locations. You could use a pryer or spudger to help remove it (a guitar pick might work as an alternative). As
nechcemomfg mentioned below, be especially careful along the front edge.
Update: I found another video that had better luck getting the back plate off: ruclips.net/video/NddfWF-k_1w/видео.html
Good luck

I didn't see the rest of your post until after I gave the same link.
Oops :)
@@mikereynolds1368 I found it the day of, no worries
So do we have to install the windows again ?
That would be the optimal solution (i.e., you only install what you want). However, there are free drive cloning tools available. You could use one of them to clone the original drive so that you get all the previous content (OS, apps, etc.) on the new drive.
Will doing this on a brand new t480 void the warranty???
Actually Lenovo is very lax on their warranty. As long as you don’t damage It in the process (which other than spilling I don’t see how it could even accidentally happen) it won’t void the warranty.
They designed it to be easily accessible in case businesses need to upgrade a vast amount of laptops with only their IT department.
I agree with RetroGamingGenesis. Memory and storage are considered Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs), and can be upgraded or replaced without voiding the warranty. In the past, Lenovo shipped me a part (a wrist rest chassis) so that I could install it myself. I was happy to do it myself, Lenovo was happy they didn't need to send a technician.
If it makes you feel more comfortable, I performed this upgrade moments after unboxing the T480. In addition, I got the Accident Protection coverage, so spillage would have been fine too! :)
what spec. for this SSD
The SSD I installed was a 500 GB Samsung 850 EVO.
@@StevenCastellucci why do I see some SSDs that look like longer RAMs? Are those installed similarly?
@@riemannspupil5095 No that’s M.2 ssd a lot of laptops only support 2.5 ssd
This was so easy for me. That stupid hp 360 x m3 was hard asl
End-user serviceability is one of the reasons many cherish ThinkPads :)
Hello, can someone help me please? my styuls got stuck inside of the thinkpad and i cant get it out. if someone had this problem before and have any ideas how i can take it out, i'd be really thankful.
thank you, have a good day/night ((:
I haven't seen that issue. Perhaps search (Google/Bing) to see if others have experienced that? Good luck!
Can I suggest get another stylus and blu-tak it to the case?
Very lousy technician, mostly don't know what to do!!!
This video is pretty horrible...
