How Much Punishment Can Rope Spokes Take?

- Rarely is a sequel as good as the original but sometimes an Aliens or Godfather Part 2 comes along to prove it's worth continuing a saga. Well this certainly isn't a Francis Ford Coppola production but after the success of my previous video I thought it was worth finding some more punishing riding to test these rope spokes myself and Adam made a couple of weeks ago.
I pushed both my bikes and my body's limit in this video and I'm happy with the results.

So the front wheel seems to be holding up fine with the rope spokes, should I try and persuade Adam to build more spokes to try in the rear wheel? :P
Be rude not to. 😄
Honestly, is there any better start to the weekend then an Ali C. video? Keep up the good work and nice weekend to ya'll!
I second that. Such a lovely, polite lad.. and he f**king nailed that rail-to-wall gap ;-)
Thanks you two, really lovely to read this :)
Ali.... when you ride on your own you seem to ruin yourself alot but in group rides you show up... always. Watching you over the years and also riding with you a few times a very long time ago this always seems to be the case. Your much better than you think you are. You always have been always will be. Big love dude.
You're a hard judge on this one 🥵 I'm sure he can be even better when he rides in group but even solo i really think he still remains one of the greatest and most stylish street trials riders ever 👍 cheers
Not quite sure what you mean, do you mean ruin myself as in fall? Or put my skills down?
I don't fall that often (touch wood!) so I assume you mean the latter. I think that's just my personality to be honest. I hold myself to high expectations and can be my own worst critic. It's both a good and bad trait to have, it's good because I think it pushes me to be a better rider but it's also bad because sometimes it can be hard to accept something that's genuinely good if I thought there's a chance it can be better.
Being on my own changes how I ride too. Solo rides with a tripod means I don't feel guilty about taking hours trying a line, I'm not keeping anyone waiting. This does mean that I end up having some absolute battles and sometimes it can get frustrating when I expect to get something quicker, I also end up getting tired mentally and physically and that's when I might come across as negative or put my ability down...it's not that I'm actually negative but like I mentioned, I can be critical of my riding especially if a line takes longer than planned and I get tired/frustrated. It's normally short lived though and it's always worth it to finish a battle with success, I enjoy the fact I didn't give up.
Group rides have a different dynamic, I don't like to make people wait so I often do stuff that I know I'll get quicker (sometimes it does take a while though), this means I don't get the same frustration or tiredness I might get from an hour of trying the same thing over and over again so my on screen persona might seem a bit more positive on a group ride (plus I genuinely get a buzz from riding with friends).
I appreciate the comment though, self doubt can be a bitch so thanks for the encouragement :)
You're being recommended in my feed, without me having to search, for the first time in a year or more. Hopefully the algorithm has picked you up again. You deserve it.
this is great to hear!
Your staying power to keep going for attempts, even after you get a little disheartened is admirable.
Thanks Josh :) There's nothing worse than putting in all that effort to end up walking away though!
Solid start with the front wheel shenanigans. Nice riding and falling skills! The corner of that wall looked a bit intimidating.
Thanks Joel, yeah it was intimidating, I think I could get it cleaner if I tried for longer...like a solid land to front and swap to back, maybe end up in a manual if it went perfectly...might have to try it again someday
Very pleased to hear your channel has picked up again, consistent effort should be rewarded in all walks of life. Cheers chief.
Thanks Peter, it's quite a relief!
Awesome video as always! Really cool to see the rope wheel holding up that well
Another great video! Thank you for sharing with us all!!!
Thank you Ali I had a very good week and your video was a nice addition to the weekend.
Always the best start to the weekend - back home after a ride of my own and on the sofa with new Ali C content.
awesome :D
As a Skater a can only admire the creativity on thats second spot… If anybody who is not involved into these kind of urban cultures you would never see a spot to ride and play on for hours !!
Good on ya mate
More, more, more content please. Just discovered your channel and love it. (fist bumps the algorithm).
Kia ora from NZ.
Awesome video man!!! Nice lines and over all good vibes🔥🙌
Thank you :)
Awesome riding, lines i can only imagine you doing that clean! The simple pivot at 11:43 just shows so much control and the whoa whoa at 14:20 made me chuckle.
mild panic lol :P
I finaly have time to binge watch the last 5 vids as i had no time to watch them. This Tshirt, this brings back some memories
Gap to nose to nose on the rail was great!
I love when I can find where you're riding by finding landmarks on google earth or maps. Properly challenging moves today. Maybe not the largest, but challenging the mental aspects of the sport. Those boundaries seem the hardest to overcome. Keep up the good work, Ali.
Which landmark gave my location away this time? :P
@@Ali_Clarkson The Strathclyde Sport Center. 😉 that was an easy one. I recall another last year with a building with roof support wings anchored to the ground you were gapping to and from. Maybe a water slide too there? That one took a while to find.
Peace, Evan
Mate your riding is on point! Quality video this one. How smart do those spokes look!!
Thanks dude! :D
Your videos are always entertaining, THANK YOU ALI!!!! 🍻
my pleasure :)
Sick video Ali and that tshirt is 👌
Brilliant camera work.
Love your vids often have to wait til to the next week to see them
I wish it was easier to make more content, I'm jealous of gamers who can make multiple videos a day!
what a crazy moves! every one is absolutely crazy! Ali, you're a legend!
haha thank you :)
Love your way of doing your RUclips thing. You are doing great no matter what
Thank you Matthias :)
Damn, I had forgotten how much I loved your riding 😍
I like this blog style videos but at the same time I really miss that old videos you made, all riding and helmet cam. Cheers Ali
Awesome video, thank you for being so nice to people when you are riding, I'm the same was when I ride BMX.... Keep up the great work.
good man! Thank you :)
@@Ali_Clarkson - Doesn't it seem like it should be a normal reaction to the situation, you don't launch your bike and body towards someone in the off chance you fall, you could really hurt someone, so to me it's only common sense not to risk someone else when it's me trying to do the trick... But you see that perpetually done in BMX videos where they'll jump off walls and stuff over people and in my opinion that makes all extreme sports look bad which is why we're not allowed to ride at certain places, because people are worried that they'll get hurt somehow, but that wouldn't happen if being nce and looking out for people would become the norm. 😩 I can only hope it happens soon.... I'd love to see places accept extreme sports and I could see a company making plastic ledge guards so we could grind them and not damage anything and they could be put all over town instead of grind blockers and stuff to stop us riding spots.
nice riding Ali, glad you had some decent weather
thanks, it almost feels like spring!
Really enjoyed that one incredible riding Ali…
Thanks Elliot :)
Whooooo had me leaning over my phone for balance with the helmet cam when you first got to the brick ledge! 😬😬😬
I think that overspun drop is the first time ever see you land something like a sack of potatoes!
haha good, I try to avoid it lol
Epic, nice one mate
Cheers Paul :)
Love this Video !!
cheers Lukas :)
Ali that rail to wall double wheel was insane. Balls like onions required for that!
Loving the vids as always!
If your balls are like onions see a doctor
haha thank you :P
This up to front to front is 🤯 but my favorite move was the creative gap to stoppi! Insane 😍
Thanks, I liked that one too :)
Always lovin it broo
thank you :)
Awesome man
Cheers :)
@11:42 i applauded silently
appreciated :)
Great vid, really love the rope spokes and I've just noticed your mutant forearms 😲👍
thanks :) If there's one thing trials riding does it's build very strong upper body muscles, forearms especially...shame the same can't be said for legs :P
This roped wheel is amazing. I think it would be an awesome idea to try it on a comp bike :)
yes that would be cool, it's a shame it's so much effort though :(
lovin it
Great ride alli that rail to wall looks a bit dodgy lol if you was to come off bad but you did it amazingly well great skills :)
Thank you, I'm glad the rails weren't closer together and trapped my legs!
amazing !
cheers!
Gor Blimey, I've never seen anybody do stuff like that with a pushbike before! What's your secret, skyhooks?
It makes sense that they should be strong, but at the same time the fear is creeping in.
Fear and loathing with rope spokes!!!
Ali vs Tom Cardy game of bike on dirt jump bikes, good promo for both channels
I'll see what I can do
If you ever come to America I would love to see you ride Chattanooga tn
a US trip is in my bucket list!
sweet video dude! I think you should try some more spinning tricks to see how the wheels handle
consider it done :)
Nice!
Thank you :)
Looking younger with no beard 😂
Great video!!
That bike looks 👍👍
haha I don't normally cut it this short but the setting on my trimmer must've gotten knocked and was shorter than I normally set it :P I don't like how I look without some longer stubble but yeah I guess I did look younger...probably because you couldn't see my grey beard hairs as much lol
Try smooth face, I do it all the time and the wife loves it! 😆 I once grew a beard for two months and she wouldn’t kiss me 🤣
Good that wheel is holding up, you going to do that back wheel too some time, would like to see if it will hold on a big drop gap 👍
I'd love to do the rear too but Adam did all the work, I'm not sure I quite have the skills/patience/time to do a wheel myself...I might have to ask him if he's up for doing the rear too :P
I've been thinking... Since you've tried new when lancing method, maybe now try something with brakes? I've been thinking about thumb brakes for bike for some time now
That rail gap was proper fair play
Thanks MTB WORLD!
You also need to test these in other segments and see how much punishment the spokes can take. I am talking about mtb's. If the rope can withstand for a long time in all mountain conditions and not give way to the abrasive conditions then you could finalize de product and start selling it.
I might have to put in some practice and see if I can make these spokes myself for all my bikes!
Hello, Algorithm, there are signs of spring - Al has made his way outdoors on his bike and I’ve got snowdrops and crocuses flowering in the garden!
spring is here (almost)!
rope or kevlar I guess will be indestructible unless you plan to use it on the woods where it there is a lot of dead branches. Ropes can be lightweight as you have mentioned on another video but also with the correct tension as most mechanic would say it's durable when it is correctly true and aligned with the right amount of tension.
Hi Ali, nice to see you conquering the tough moves. It's inspiring and gets me to push myself learning tricks. Anyway whats your thoughts on the spokes, ie will you now do the back wheel or is it a front only thing? What are the benefits and what are the draw backs? How does it feel compared to a normally laced wheel when doing all these moves? You taught me to build wheels and I often go back to that first wheel build video when I get stuck so I'm curious as a wheel builder how they go. Cheers man, keep up the good work.
Thanks Scott :)
Adam made these spokes, I miiiight be able to do them myself after watching him but it's a lot of effort and I'm not sure if I have the skill/patience/time to do a whole wheel myself. I can ask Adam but I'm not holding my breath he'd be up for another wheel :P
I honestly don't notice any difference in feel over steel spokes, I think with a rim as still as this Light Bicycle one and on a smaller wheel it's just too rigid to notice. On a bigger wheel with a lighter/flexier rim you'd notice a difference then.
Stoked my videos have helped you with wheel builds :)
@@Ali_Clarkson Thanks for the reply. I watched the build video you did with Adam and was really impressed although I've got about zero interest in actually doing it myself. It's a looooot of work. But it's very cool to watch and very interesting to see how the wheel is holding up. I'd definitely be keen to see how a rear wheel holds up. Anyway cheers man, love the work, keep it up!!!
Nice Video
thank you :)
@@Ali_Clarkson I hope that this video also gets many views 👌
What is the site for the company for the spokes
Nice one ali i hope you went to steak burger behind you lol 👍
I did get a coke from them haha
@@Ali_Clarkson nice to see you on pinkbike slack randoms with your rope spokes mate 👍
Great riding as always Ali. Do you plan to build a rear rope wheel?
I'd love to but Adam at Tartybikes did all the work for this wheel and I'm not sure if he'd want to put he work in again for the rear...I can ask him though :)
@@Ali_Clarkson he looks like the sort of bloke that would enjoy this sort of challenge :)
Hey, and so what kind of rope did u used guys ? I watched the video and couldn’t figure out like what exact rope he used or where can i buy it.
Uhmw rope. It's probably some form of Dyneema brand sail rigging.
One eternity later on getting on the ledge Fairplay BRO you manage to do it I bet you spent a good hour on that one
thank you, probably longer than an hour adding in all the waiting time to make sure there's no people in the way haha
Lol it’s better to be safe than sorry Nice to see your shoulder is on the mend that 360 drop give it a good test
Why type of MTB bike is that exactly? Is it considered a downhill bike? Rigid frame no suspension which is what I like coming from a BMX background. I like the fact many of the same tricks are possible on both types of bikes and riding and I want to get back into riding to stay in shape, but more importantly I just really miss riding and being around bikes in general. Times have been a tad tough last few years so financially can't build or buy a bike like that now but hoping to someday soon. Thanks and absolutely amazing riding skills man and insane amount of bike control and it shows 👊
Just get an old, decent quality unsuspended mountain bike, put some new light tires on it and rip. Do it for $80 if you play your cards right. Aftermarket brake pads can get pretty good bite out of rim brakes. He's done tons of riding on old mtb's and has said it's definitely a viable option for doing most of these techniques. His bike is a refined version of such a bike called a street trials bike.
16:29 i'm on smoko!
Seems like the Maxxis tyres can take a beating too. 26x2,35 I think ?!
Id love to see them on a bmx bike ridden by a heavy street rider. Been enjoying watching these videos all the same though.
what is your handlebar hieght ? Cheers
hmm I actually don't know sorry :(
Made it to 1:00 where the low frame rate video started. Not going to bother trying to skip all the low frame rate stuff.
Please set all your gopro's / cameras to 50/60 fps.
No
Ropa dopa

I felt that one
Yow Ali dont forget me when you get to a Million Subs! Im here since 35K Subs. LOL
I think we're a long way off a million but as long as you keep watching and commenting I'll remember and recognize the regulars such as yourself :)
What about 12 actual spokes triple cross and the rest straight string ???.???
If they can take your abuse then they should hold up for most people.
Do the spokes flex to give a feeling of subtle suspension even after having been laced up hard?
yeah, I'd be confident these would be fine for any type of riding :) No, with a wheel this small and rim this stiff there's no difference in feel over steel spokes, I think you'd need a much lighter/bigger wheel to get any vibration dampening sensation
Oof, lucky that your legs came free from that rail loop, you could have dangled from your broken bones like in a bear trap!
yeah for sure! I think if the two rails were closer together that would've been no riding for a while
@@Ali_Clarkson you're a proper daredevil
Do you ride tubeless?
Awesome riding skills. But I'm sure not sold on the spokes. I'm guessing they have a considerable amount of stretch, so are really good at absorbing impacts, but probably terrible for any controlled riding at speed.
Weirdly the rope has the potential to have much less stretch than steel, depending on what sort of uhmw rope you use.
Belter as usual 👌
thanks very much :)
why don't you ride with Danny Mackaskill?
Danny's cousin? I don't think he rides much. As for Danny, he's moved 4 hours away from Glasgow now so it's not so easy to just casually go for rides any more :(
11:16....I mean..... If you dont do that ... Then you dont have any business riding street ... Or park ..... Or for that matter , anywhere other than your garage.... But then again.. what do they want you to do??. Technically you are just doing your job and they got in the way.. so a bike on their head while at your office should be anticipated . 😂
I've certainly been on rides with people who don't seem to care :(
@@Ali_Clarkson not many do..
How the fook do you ride like that. I can barely wheelie.
Take it downhill and find out if she do some flips
Science is opposit pull
Not sure what you mean but thanks? :P
