  • In this video we're checking out Terry Reid. We've become aware that this artist was the first one asked to join Jimmy Page's New Yardbirds, which then became Led Zeppelin. We're curious what Jimmy saw in this guy for his new band. We're still happy with Jimmy's final choice, mind you. Enjoy!

Second all these, especially Mayfly. He has two performances on the Old Grey Whistle Test that are as good as any live music broadcast in television history. Also try Faith To Arise

I don't think there is really a typical Terry Reid sound. He covered a wide spectrum of material across just a few solo albums, and he was well versed in singing the kind of blues/rock then emerging in the late 1960's. He was too much of a maverick to sit easily in a band, or even to sustain a successful solo career, but he remains very highly regarded. Worth listening to: Rich Kid Blues, Mayfly, Dean, To Be Treated Rite, The 5th of July.

Thanks for the airplay guys . I've still got the original vinyl which I bought on release (1976). Even on my copy the piano/synthesizer (?) sounds a bit ropey, as Chris alluded to, almost as if the tape was a bit stretched, but all other instruments and vocals are superb. If only for your own entertainment check out the rest of the album , you wont be disappointed
p.s. FYI, the album was produced by Graham Nash, he of Crosby Stills & Nash. I think the instrument you were trying to identify was the Balalaika .

I never understood why Terry Reid wasn't a superstar.
He had it all, great songwriter, great singer, great guitar player. Loved and respected by his peers. I don't get why it never really worked out for him.
As a side note for guitar freaks, Joe Bonamassa now owns Terry's famous Telecaster, theres a great interview on You Tube with him and Terry about that, in part.
To Be Treated Right is probably my favourite.

Bonamassa sold Terry's telecaster to a guitar dealer so who knows where it is now.

@@dianestrauss9699 so much for curating it!
What did he get? If Joe buys a guitar, it usually means he hss to sell one.

@@Sandy-dd4le I wish I knew. All I can say is that I was massively disappointed in Bonamassa for selling. Should have been returned to Terry in my humble opinion.

      @@dianestrauss9699 yeah, agreed!
He also said it was one he wouldn't part with until he died, and he would "curate" it until then.
Still, i guess it proves there are guitars in the world that Joe *doesn't* own!

OOP's forgot to add. If you guys like a bit of Sax (no pun intended ) Check out from 1971 the band "Traffic " and their rendition of "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" It's a long one (10 minutes +) , but certainly worth listening too.

I discovered Terry Reid only last year and have been listening to a fair swathe of his output. I would recommend Without Expression if you want to listen to another song

Great suggestion. First song of Terry's that I ever heard. Best version on RUclips is from The Old Grey Whistle Test in the early 1970's.

Terry Reid also turned down an offer to join Deep Purple.

I have a suggestion. Check out Pet Shop Boys 'It Couldn't Happen Here' It's taken from their 1987 film It Couldn't Happen Here.

Led Zeppelin has no song compared to this. Pop commercial rock stands so low to Terry
