- Camco 41545 portable toilet that has the split upper/lower design. Its a good toilet that I have used for over a year with good results.
Note; while there is not human waste in this video, I do talk about human waste so put on your big boy pants if that makes you feel uncomfortable.

The Good:
Easy toilet solution to my converted cargo trailer
Able to dump without a dump station
Has its own water so it wont drain your trailer on-board water tank
The Bad:
Stinky dumping if no fan and not flushing the toilet at the same time
On hot days there can be odor that seeps out
If you don't empty it often, it gets really stinky
End Result:
I really like it for my solution and do recommend it

Do u use any chemicals to break down the waste?
Yes, they are the basic orange treatment drop-Ins. You could use liquid also if you want.
@@JoyfulCamping -YES, us Campa Chem from thetford. Goes in the black tank. 2 ounces smell is GONE and breaks down waste. Good for 30+ flushes. It’s like a septic tank, the longer it’s in, the more waste breaks down.
Thanks for the video. Yours is the only portable toilet video I have found that shows people that they have to aggressively agitate the holding tank before dumping ,to effectively remove all matter. Anyone can show the features of a product. Only a few make the effort to share effective cleaning tips. I am now confident my portable toilet will be cleaned thoroughly.
Glad to help and yes make sure to shake it well. Nobody wants any 'leftovers' ha ha. Happy travels!
Amen!
I live in a dry cabin. Just recently bought this toilet. I found that using a liquid car wax in the bowl really helps keep it clean.
Oh thats a good idea!
R H Baby oil does the same job, cost next to nothing, widely available and is non toxic. Just a few drops spread over the surface with some tissue is all that's required.
Thats a great idea! Do u just dump it in?
Very good idea. I am going to use it. Thanks!
Great Idea
I just want to say "Thank You" for doing this video. You have provided some very important information for a lot of people.
I'm so glad it was helpful! Have a wonderful day!!
Thank you for demonstrating how to clean it. It helps a lot to your viewers. For those who are not yet aware how to use portable toilet, kindly check also in youtube. There are demonstrations how to use it and how to flush it. Mostly, companies that sell portable toilets post videos how to use it so that people will be entice to buy from them.
Ya there are little tricks to the 'use' which I'll let the manufacture address how to 'use' it. ha ha
Thank you for taking the time to demostrate this. I'm making the change from using a black tank to a cassette and wanted to know how to really clean one well. I took such great care of my black tanks that I would profess, you can eat out of mine (I wouldn't, but you can) lol. Thanks for giving me the confidence to make the change.
I'm very glad this helped out! Stay safe on the road and happy travels!
Real talk, really helpful!! Thanks for covering all the issues so thoroughly, and for the useful tips & hacks!!💐💐💐
Thank you and I'm glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the review. I'm checking into portable toilets and this is a best-seller on Amazon. I like the price ($63 for this model). I see the Thetford Curve is a top-of-the-line model, but the issues reviewers had with the battery pack/electric flush mechanism failing are concerning. This is much more economical and has similar features, just with a manual flush mechanism.
Glad to help :) Its also tough as last winter I left water in it and have no cracks from ice expansion. Hope it works out well for you!
I’ve seen people say that adding some ice to the final rinse can be beneficial at helping to dislodge any stubborn remnants. They dumped before returning home then did the ice and water rinse on the way home. The movement of the trailer did the shaking work for them. Maybe just dumping the leftover cooler/ice chest water could be a decent recycling technique for this.
Yes I've heard that as well. The ice might melt and become rounded so I'm not sure how effective it would be. As long as chemicals get put in I would expect everything to break down eventually. Happy travels!
Nice demo of proper cleaning. Learned new things for max clean.
Glad it helped. Happy travels!
Thanks for making a ''crappy'' video on portable toilets. been lookin to buy one for our popup
Glad to help! Its a great option for a popup trailer :)
Based on our first use of the Camco 2.6-galllon toilet this week, I will say that this is excellent advice. Thanks!
Thank you!
Although I have a Coleman I think your tutorial is applicable. Will soon be using unit on an upcoming dry camping trip. Think it will work out well. Now I’m somewhat knowledgeable on cleaning it, thanks 😊‼️
Glad to hear it was helpful for you. Have a great trip!
Most houses have a sewer clean out outside the house (where the houses sewer connects to the municipal system) or at the septic tank on a septic system, just dump the cassette there and avoid dragging the thing into your house.
I would love to find or install a sewer clean out to the side of my house. Agreed it would be much better. Thanks!
Bought my unit due to pandemic. We had a few incidents where places wouldn’t let us use their restrooms. Purchased this toilet just as an emergency use in our van. A year later, it was finally used. Cleaning was a bit tricky, I shook it like you did. But there was still some water in there as the design doesn’t allow to get every last drop. Luckily I have skinny hands and long gloves 🧤. Went in with some napkins to completely dry the inside. I highly suggest using the enzyme/odor additive to help break down the solids as someone else mentioned. 🤙🏾
Muchas gracias. Muy ilustrativo. Una manera divertida de hablar de la popó. Gracias!
Me alegra que el video te haya ayudado. ¡Viajes felices!
I've been using one for years. Yes it is a little unpleasant to dump, but it really isn't a big deal if you don't let it go too long.
Yup its all about the bathroom fan, flush, and water. Glad to hear yours has worked out well for you.
Great video. If you've ever changed a diaper you will have already gotten over the gross-out part. One small thing I would have added, you should show the closing of the flush valve before you shake it around. That could get ugly if you skip that step.
ha ha YES that would be so bad!
Not really changed any diapers but the stuff still gets me grossed out so much and that's what I was searching for.. Disposing the waste on the place. :/
Helpful video!
(NOTE: DO NOT dump the camping potty with feminine products into a toilet on a septic, preferably not at all.)
Thanks for the info :) Have fun and safe travels!
Just used camco toilet for the first time this weekend. Worked great but the handle on the pump came of the first time I used it. Still functional though. I'm glad I bought it.
Oh wow! Did it break off or were you able to fix it?
Best video review. Truth in life. Gonna put one on my 62 boat pirate bar project
That's so awesome! Glad it helped out and your project sounds exciting :D
@@JoyfulCamping its alotta fun. Framing the "head" now
Yes Water was important when I had one in my van. It was wonderful and I would never want compost when I can use these with the proper chemicals
Ya I'm not sold on the compost toilet setup =) Happy travels!
Ty, good review only comments loose the music while you're talking, it is very distracting
Thank you for the feedback. I'll keep that in mind.
Excellent video It doesn’t get better than this in how to actually clean it thank you 😊 for this we are going to buy one of this toilets for my father in law for emergencies
Thank you and yes this would be a great emergency toilet.
That hilarious vid is by the fit rv.good info dude.appreciate it.
Glad to help. Happy travels!
Dumb me bought a house with only one bathroom and a house full of girls (one with a baby pressing on her bladder)! Well....after tonight's huge plumbing issue leaving us toilet-less until the plumber returns tomorrow . . . . I'm buying one of these tonight.
Glad to hear it will come in handy!
Thank you for the video. It's difficult to find the info how to use it in real life. Good luck.
Glad I could help! Let me know of anything else you'd like as well. Happy travels!
Awesome job....Thank You for ur time and tutorial
Thank you! I'm glad it was able to help. Happy travels!
Thanks for the tips mate very helpful
Glad to help. Have fun on your adventures!
That helps out alot..Thanks Man ...Great video
Glad it helps out!
Although, feminine products can be flushed down into the portable toilet, when discarding the contents, regular household toilets aren't built to flush feminine products.
Yes; thank you for the insight! Thank you for sharing the info to help out. Stay safe and happy travels!
Thank-you, very helpful!
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful for you. Happy travels!
I agree that the dumping part is difficult. Only one handle. It would have been nice if the had a handle at the side corner round on the other side of the drain spout. With the weight of the waste makes it difficult. I'm getting a different camping commode...
Ya I suppose it could be tricky to stay clean but a good pair of gloves help. Stay safe on the road and happy travels!
Just like the couple from the funny video, why dump in the house?.... every house has a clean out (cap that allows the plumber to clean out the sewage line) on the outside of the house, you just have to look for it. Unscrew the cap and dump it in, no flushing and no stink in the house.
Yes! I need to locate that at my house :)
Good idea!👌🏻
Before storing, should you also do a "shake wash" with some bleach in there too? To kill any remaining bacteria and sanitize the interior before it sits on a shelf for an extended period of time
That would be good to make sure things are very clean. Just be sure the seals have something applied to them afterward so they stay good while in storage.
Best advice here is when he says “MAN UP” lol 😂
Instead of flushing over and over again and using toilet paper to wipe out remains, We use a spray bottle containing water and some deodoriser. Remains are easely removed by the force of the water jet, thus using much less water.
Thanks for the tip. Happy travels!
good ab workout in the process
haha Yes it is!
Great vid.
You have answered some of my questions in 1 vid.
Does the Vaseline effect the seal over time?
Can cheap regular toilet paper be used or does it have to be specific to the chemical toilet type paper?
I have just recently bought a Wanderer 20L toilet for our vintage Cub Campomatic 380 camper trailer.

The basic answer about the vaseline being an issue over time is that petroleum stuff like vaseline may make an impact on real rubber (derived from a tree), current technology does not use natural rubber and thus isn't an issue. That said, I don't know the exact chemical makeup of the seal but should be fine. As far as toilet paper, it'd be best to use the RV specific kind if the tank will not be emptied regularly. This is due to clumping/buildup but for these little tank that normally get emptied often (and shook around to clean), normal ply toilet paper should be fine.
Thanks for the video. I'm on rinse 7 or 8 and still have little bits. I did notice your portable toilet has a nice smooth bottom and sides. In other words, there's nothing much to stop the flow. Mine has so many crevices for freaking bits to cling on to. So did the previous one I returned.
But lesson learned, I will definitely use way more water next time. I did this time and it was better than my first experience.
Thanks
Nick
Glad to hear you were able to get it a bit better with more water. Happy travels!
Thank you very much
Very useful information
Thanks. I'm glad to have helped. Happy travels!
agree. thx 4 the video
Glad to help. Happy travels!
Excellent demo
Thank you. Glad to help!
Do you use plain water to fill it up? Or do you use a chemical to break it down & mask the smell?
Oh good question. I use plain water for the top/fill area. General holding tank chemicals would be used in the bottom/waste section though.
@@JoyfulCamping
So even with the chemicals....it still smells bad?
I going to buy one for emergencies...but I sure hope that I never have to use it. I'm a strong person...but I can't handle the sight & smell of such things.
Lord help me.
@@flowerpower2079 -NO smell with chemicals in the holding tank( bottom portion)
Man up and do it!
OMG DO NOT DUMP SANITARY NAPKINS DOWN YOUR HOMES DRAIN !!!!! Lol might be fine for cassette but not home Wc
Thanks for the tip. Happy travels!
After you dump it do you put chemicals in it? Do you add water for flushing?
Yes I put a chemical packet into it. The ones I get are meant for bigger tanks but still work great. Could use liquid treatment instead to make it last longer. Yes water is used for flushing.
For storing it for a long time after it was used like a camping trip, would you recommend any chemicals like bleach or anything? Im worried harsh chemicals would deteriorate the plastic.
Good question. I've always rinsed it out real good with bleach and then rinsed the bleach out. My only concern would be the rubber seal but I havn't had any issues with it.
I read somewhere that it's not recommended to use bleach, because if you use a dumping station at RV Parks or septic tanks, it will destroy the beneficial bacteria and ruin the system. But, I pretty much have the same concern about using bleach and destruction of the material. It's probably best to stick to Sani-Packs or any other type of portable potty enzyme packets. This way, you can safely dump in any kind of designated dumping area. I was thinking maybe a well diluted solution of clorox with several rinses at home might be ok, to clean and store ( not sure), but while in use on the go, it is wise to stick to using portable potty additives only because Chlorine is prohibited at dump sites. For now, I am skeptical about using chlorine in fear of causing erosion of the material. To be safe, for now I will avoid that until I research that question further.
Would it be less stinky if you dumped at the station on the way out of the campground? Any experience with that? I'm considering getting one and think we'd use ours mostly for weekend outings in our popup, and for weeing only.
I would think that the dump station would be a different kind of stinky because while you are dumping in the open air, there is also the open tube that you have to dump into. I'll have to give it a shot the next time I am near one.
You could dump your waste in a Public Park Restroom. Most park are open to the public and alot of the times there's parks that hardly has any foot traffic (if you feel embarrassed people seeing walk with this cassette)..Just a suggestion, from my experience.
Just one question whats the problem with your loo you are using to dump into ...Looks like you have a major blockage problem ...whats the issue....
ha ha possibly someone "dumped" before I went in.
good advice thanks!
Glad to help :)
12ft12v hey I have another question about your setup. Ok several questions. You seem to boondock a lot, do you ever run across an area where your trailer is too low for the terrain? What sort of mpg @ mph do you usually get? Did you insulate the trailer? Sorry for all my questions I'm considering switching to a similar setup from a traditional trailer
Hey Chasin' Simplicity, I've been trying to get around to making a video for a response for you but it has been busy lately so I will give you a quick rundown and provide additional information in a future video.
- My trailer has an axle flip kit so I have never had an issue with clearance. One note is somehow a relative did manage to rip off a stabilizer jack. eh, oh well
- For MPG, I get about 11 @ 65MPH...ish lol My truck is a gas 2002 so it doesn't have all the better MPG of newer trucks. I don't mind taking it nice an easy so I am happy when there is a 55MPH zone to bump up my MPG :)
- I did insulate the trailer with some 1/2" foam/foil insulation board. Did I do it right....no. lol I have the foil facing inside the trailer so in the winter it heats up fast but doesn't retain it very well when I turn off the heater. In the summer it basically holds the heat longer so cooling the trailer takes longer.
Thanks a bunch. I found an enclosed trailer 5x8 (size I was looking for) up in Idaho. I have purchased it and am picking it up tomorrow! Then I will have to do some modifications to it but it is already insulated and two windows have been installed. I am very excited. I am downsizing from my 17' traditional RV that I will be putting on KSL soon!
How many times can you use it before you have to clean it
I guess that depends on how much water you add after using it. It could easily make it through the weekend with a couple people. Probably through the week if used sparingly. Happy travels!
If pee only it can be a comfortable week. I cant imagine more than 3 days for poop. We dont poop in our potty, its for emergencies only.
A question for you and your subscribers.../
Would Dawn dishwashing liquid be a good alternative for cleaning the waste out of the holding tank?
I find the chemicals and deodorizers they sell are ridiculously overpriced.
Also....Would dishwashing liquid be harmful to the rubber seals ?
I'm new to all of tis and any replies would be greatly appreciated. :-)
That's a great question! To be frank, I don't know the impact of dishwashing liquid on the seal. Just based off observation though, a dishwasher at home has a rubber seal around it and those usually do not leak. Same thing for the rubber seal between the bottom of the sink and a disposal unit. Hopefully someone with a background in cleaning agents will be able to chime in. Stay safe on the road and happy travels!
@@JoyfulCamping Thank you for the reply..
When i served in the U.S Navy circa 1969 to 1973 as a construction mechanic we always used some type of soap to slip rubber O-;rings over various fittings so my question about that is irrelevant.
More importantly is my question about using a good smelling dishwashing liquid to clean and deodorize the poop tank
All the insanely overpriced items the manufacturers of these porta potties want to sell to the ones who buy their potties seems to be a waste of money when good old Dawn or Palmolive dishwashing liquid would accomplish the same task.
What are your thoughts on the subject?
@@crazyuncleduke8012 Dishwasher tablet with as hot water as possible. Shake until your arms are tired. Dump, rinse twice and be ready to be amazed at how clean it gets.
Does anyone use the deodorizer pouches that people use in RV black tanks in these?
Good question! I use a little treatment pouch which may be the same thing. You could use the liquid stuff also. Happy travels!
Oh,so it wont leak from the hole in the middle?
I think you mean the main hole where the waste goes into the black tank. If so, you are correct because it is sealed.
I want to use this in my cabin. I'm only there on weekends. How many weekends can I go before I should clean this?
hmmm, I guess it depends on how frequent your use is. You could probably get away with at least a couple weekends at least.
Do you have to put some cleaner in it?
I just rinse it with water. If you wanted to use some suds the only thing I can think of being an issue would be any impact/degradation on the seal between the top tank and the holding tank.
They did not use Chemicals or it would not have had that Oder
Thanks. It really wasn't too stinky =)
The music while you are talking is very distracting.
Thank you for the feedback. I'll keep it in mind for future videos. Happy travels!
I'm just gonna use mine for pee only if any person has to go #2 they out of luck lol
Works for Number 2?
Yes this toilet works just fine for number 2. It may require a little extra rinse when cleaning but no big deal. Happy travels!
Why are American toilets half filled with water? Weird 🤔
Good question. I guess it's just a design thing or maybe a regulation/requirement here. Happy travels!
I’ve traveled to several European countries and their toilets are the same, as was the toilets in Mexico. Not sure I’ve heard of a dry toilet
I live full time in a dry cabin. Watching you waste all of that water, SERIOUSLY hurt!
I guess depending on the type of waste you could use less water to rinse.
Mostly because you left the water running
The net savings in water from all the viewers learning should offset this one video X100
Everybody poops.
ha ha yes and we have to deal with it depending on our toilet solution. Happy travels!
Gloves!
Yes ha ha when there is 'normal waste' I do wear gloves :)
Fuck all that shit. I much prefer the types with a bag of kitty litter- just tie the bag and throw it away
ha ha That is one way to do it. Happy travels!
I can smell this already
ha ha Thank goodness we don't have smell-o-vision yet =P It really doesn't smell bad due to being flushed right away. Happy travels!
