  • Mike gives us an overview of what goes into a Twin Cam cam compartment inspection and upgrade of the cam chain tensioner chain.
    Full project at: www.fixmyhog.com/videos/cam-g...
As many of us are already well aware, from 2000 to 2006, Harley Davidson’s spring style cam chain tensioners were a complete disappointment to say the least! Eventually, Harley began suggesting that the tensioners be inspected at 30k miles. Hardly helpful. In the real world, independent shops (like us) have seen spring cam chain tensioners fail with as little as 15k miles. On the other hand, we have had customers go upwards of 60k miles without failure. We guess that’s where HD arrived at suggesting inspection at 30k. We also suggest you watch the Cam Chain hydraulic Tensioner Upgrade Project Videos Here. www.fixmyhog.com/videos/cam-c...
Regardless of which style upgrade or vendor is being considered, there are a few things that are extremely important to take into consideration. Inner cam bearings must be upgraded to Torrington bearings. It is imperative that the bearings are replaced correctly and with the correct specialty tool. If inner cam bearings are damaged during removal or installation, debris can fall into the crankcase. This will inevitably result in pulling the motor out of the frame so that the crankcase can be separated. This, in order to retrieve the debris and properly clean the compartment.
Regardless as to whether or not you will be using adjustable pushrods; if rocker boxes are leaking, we strongly suggest addressing at this time. If adjustable pushrods are not needed for a conversion, stock Harley Davidson pushrods are good quality and fine to reuse. It’s important that the hydraulic tappets are replaced. Tappet failure can be catastrophic to a motor. Like a bad cam bearing or a broken spring tensioner, debris from a broken hydraulic tappet can spread throughout a motor. It can score or completely seize an oil pump. If oil pressure is lost, you have catastrophic damage will be inevitable.
If considering a gear drive conversion, pinion shaft run-out will need to be measured. If run-out exceeds the manufacturer’s specified limit, flywheels will need to be replaced or re-trued; or a different conversion will need to be installed.

These videos are pure gold for the do it yourselfer that wants to save money. You can find a 2000-2006 Harley with low mileage for a great price. Like Mikes says if you do the gear drive exchange you will have a bullet proof bike that will last for a lot of years.

Harley-davidson are strange machines. They go from potential catastrophic failure to completely undestructible with just a few parts

Hey Mike! So glad I found your channel. Much needed info for me.
I have an '04 HD ElectraGlide with matching HD TLE Sidecar.
I have 70K miles on my bike and have low oil pressure now. Mechanical gauge said so.
I need to do the whole "Cam Chain upgrade" thingy now...oil pump, CAM Plate, CAMS, Gears, Pushrods, etc.
I'm not a master mechanic by any means but hope to do all of this myself with the help from friends, RUclips, Forums, manual, whatever.
The techs at my local Harley shop said go with upgraded CHAIN Drive while a local shop owner I know said GEAR Drive CAMS.
I want to keep the bike forever and just want the most cost effective upgrade above stock quality. Not looking for a race bike.
S&S, Feuling, Andrews...I have information overload coming out of my eyeballs!

80,000 miles on a 2000 flh, it's time for an upgrade to hydraulic tensioner. Timken inner bearings are b-148's , what timken/torrington bearings would be in the cam plate, roller in the back ball in front? I'll be going with gear drive should the run out be with in spec

ive been told it's not recommended to switch to gears if you've already got a good amount of miles on the bike, as if there is even a micro hair of "not true" alignment, the gears can't compensate for it like a tensioned chain can..... thoughts? I have 32k miles... inspecting tensioners next week.... plan to upgrade cam kit next year... but on the fence with hydro tensioners and chain, or gears....

What happens if crank run-out increases over time?
A chain with tensioners would absorb that to a limit but a gear drive would self destruct on less runout.
I would not run a gear drive on a stock crank.

Would somebody PLEASE make a setup for twin cam 88 that is Gear Drive on the back side of the cam and chain drive on the front side of the cam??
This would be so much easier to maintain the original setup and so much more reliable than the aftermarket setups.
