My favorite Sonic game ever made. Nostalgia is the only thing PERSONALLY that could have me say something like Sonic Mania, Sonic 3, Sonic Adventure 2 , Sonic Unleashed or something. It’s easily the most consistently fun, refreshing, and exhilarating experience in a single package in the series. There simply AREN’T low points for me in this game. I thought Doom Surf was a little clunky then got used to it. I thought Doom Morph was a little clunky then got used to it. You get everything in this package. 2D and 3D Sonic from his best designed levels. 2D (for the first time) and 3D Shadow levels from his greatest hits and some where he’s never been. Each character’s stages are endlessly replayable. I see myself playing Shadow’s stages over and over and over just driving down the time and exploring optimal paths. The gameplay is top notch quality rollercoaster fun. It’s the best adrenaline rush I’ve gotten from the series thus far. It’s simply the best package available for $50 SEGA has ever put out, that’s my personal opinion. Buy this 2 game package. I have absolutely NO PROBLEM personally (that’s key there) buying the digital deluxe on my Steam Deck to play it 3 days early and also pre-ordering a physical PS5 copy for that unique box art and to play it 60 FPS 120hz on an OLED TV. Sonic Team and SEGA deserve sharp criticism when they get it wrong but they deserve ALL the praise when they get it THIS right. THIS is now the standard going forward. We are so back.
Shadow Generations is the best Sonic game we've gotten since Sonic Mania, and Sonic Generations before that. Every level was sick and fun as hell. The 2D Levels are the best in any modern game.
I honestly would go as far as to say Shadow Generations is just the best Sonic game we've gotten, ever. Better than Sonic Generations, better than Mania. Shadow gens is pretty much a perfect Sonic game.
@TitanicTitan26 I fear you may be correct, I went through all the mainline games in my head to see what the general consensus was for any major problems ppl talk about, and it seems like the most perfect Sonic games are Sonic 2, Sonic 3&K, Sonic Mania, and Shadow Generations. Shadow Generations is easily the best 3D game, its only flaw is that it's not longer.
@@jojoharder6906 Personally i would say Unleashed is as good as Generations, even when considering the Werehog(i personally find the Werehog fun, as long you put points into combat most of the time, then strength).
Shadow as a character is pretty edgy too me when portrayed correctly. But also it’s very easy to overdo it I think he’s an in universe edge lord, he’s technically a teenager who was told he was the ultimate life force for his whole life, then he lost his home along with his closest friends. I don’t think he’s a bad person or a bad character but he definitely has the most nighlistic worldview out of the entire cast, I think the main reason people give him so much hate for his edge is that he tends to act out of character when the writers lean into those aspects of his personality. The thing I love about this game is that he feels like a good person with a much darker world view, and I think this game is probably the best cannon portrayal of shadow since Adventure 2
His character was fine up until his spin off game then the just overly edgefied him removing keep traits he had like actually caring for people then they redeemed there’sself with Sonic 06 which is possibly the best version of shadow we have seen and then from there on out he’s just edgy for literally no reason.
Shadow generations is absolutely amazing, the only thing I want from it is more! Sonic Generations….I’ve never liked Sonic Generations. I always thought Unleashed to be superior. The boost stages flow better to me and I’d rather be the werehog than classic sonic. But, the preorder gave me the sonic Dreamcast skin and that alone is enough to make me replay generations
The thing about chaos control and the Doom Wings being underused is that you can actually use them whenever you want. Chaos Control stops the timer so you can use it for easy S ranks and the Wings allow for so much creativity for skips.
I really have no idea what you're talking about with some of these "critiques" as they just don't add up. Doom Morph can be a tiny bit wonky at best but even that's rare and the swinging is totally fine. I and others I've watched have had zero problem with it. The only real issue with it is that the game doesn't tell you clearly how to slingshot which it should've. Doom Surf is used in like two levels and two bosses so idk what you mean by it's "used too much" and the Doom Wings while yes you get them at the end of the game, don't feel underused. The entire final act uses them heavily and it is perfect for traversing the hub, plus you can use it in any stage you want with its own new rank to get. Also sorry but that footage of you flying off the stage to where you're not supposed to in Radical Highway had to have been fabricated. There's so many clear signs and ring trails showing you where you're supposed to go. It's not too much power, it's the right amount of it. It eats your rings like a super form and how long you fly for is based on how much boost you have. Also while Shadow Gens definitely has more lore, Sonic Gens' story isn't bad. It's just simple and Sonic is perfectly allowed to have simple stories sometimes, the writing was never not good.
Looks like Sega lived long enough to learn. They finally escaped from the city of mediocrity. Wonderful to see them advance! It’s been generations since shadow was represented perfectly! It’s always a treat to see Shadow go up against awful forces! It sure is incredible to see all the colors!

2:30 you could do chaos control in sonic heroes as part of the team blast ability, although unlike in shadow generations, it took longer to fill the gauge and you had to wait the whole animation to do it (which killed most enemies near you anyways), so doing it standalone and the gauge can fill much faster (or with the option to break an item box to instantly fill it) is much better!
I'm still surprised that NO reviewer to has yet to mention that both Modern and Classic Sonic got a Drop Dash in the Sonic Generations half of the game. It changes a lot of the flow (for the better) in stages, and I swear that Classic FEELS different here than he does in the original 360/PS3 version. Less heavy, more responsive.
