Try ‘Detonation’ ‘Ancestral’ or ‘ Refuge’ from the same concert at the Royal Albert Hall london. Class Act. He recruits a different set of musicians for his solo work although Craig Blundell (Drums), Nick Beggs (Bass) and Adam Holtzman (Keys) and Ninet Tayeb (vocals) are regulars.
Brilliant song. Great review. You should try listening to the studio album. The keyboard & guitar solo at the end is even better. Guthrie Govan did the guitar solos for the studio album. His solo on Ancestral on the same album is also fantastic. Also check out Drive Home & Luminol (epic bass) from the album The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories). I recommend the studio album version for all of em. Personally I think Steven Wilson's studio stuff is perfect.
That instrument is called the Chapman Stick. "The Chapman Stick is an electric musical instrument devised by Emmett Chapman in the early 1970s. A member of the guitar family, the Chapman Stick usually has ten or twelve individually tuned strings and is used to play bass lines, melody lines, chords, or textures"
Love Steven Wilson! His entire discography is a goldmine. If you want to react to another one of his songs, Ancestral is an amazing long song, and Drive Home has an incredible guitar solo
Excellent response RR. It has been way too long between PT or Steven Wilson posts. Welcome to the genius of SW part 2. Pretty much an equivalent amount of back catalogue to go through with SW as with PT and every bit of it just as good. Completely different line up of musicians to PT, but as you have already picked up on - every bit as mindblowingly talented. Adam Holzman on Keyboards and Nick Beggs on Bass/Chapman Stick and harmonies have been with Steve right from the beginning of his solo career. Craig Blundell on drums is his 2nd drummer since taking over the sticks from Marco Minneman and Alex Hutchings joined him for this tour on lead guitar and harmonies. All of them absolute masters. You could pick anything from this LIVE DVD and it would blow your mind, but to make a few quick top of the pops suggestions: Ancestral, Vermillion Core, Detonation (2nd half at least), Song of I are all just stunning to watch and listen to. Keep up the great work.
This song in the yahoo concert with the leyend Dave Kilminster on guitar is way better than this. or the album version with the even more legendary Guthrie Govan is better than this. Just saying
