How Death's Door and Tunic Aim to Transcend Soulslikes

  • While we’ve seen plenty of Zelda-likes and Souls-likes over the years, few games have managed to understand the exact elements that makes them great quite like Tunic and Death’s Door. The thing that makes the Souls games so memorable isn’t the steep difficulty, nebulous mechanics, or grotesque bosses, but rather a pure sense of adventure, exploration, and discovery, and these two games have that in spades. And so, while we wait for Elden Ring and the sequel to Breath of the Wild to come along next year, it’s indies like these that seem to be adeptly carrying their torch.

    Hope you enjoyed this short new video essay! The plan is to release a new video essay short from Marty and other Escapist contributors on Thursdays going forward. RUclips Members will receive 48 hours of early access on Tuesdays typically! We decided instead of doing another named series, that we'd leave this video essay playlist open-ended so that we can cover pretty much anything we want.

    Deaths door is the only game I have ever got a platinum trophy on. It did mean that I had to play the whole game again only using an umbrella as my mele weapon but I did it 😅 Great game!

    I would say DD is "tough but fair" because every death feels earned, and you can learn from it. After you learn the bosses, you can do them without getting hit. Eventually you realize that you aren't trapped in the room the boss/enemy... they're trapped in there with you. You're here to reap them, and reap you shall. That was my favorite revelation of playing.
    I would not say the same for Tunic. It's not "tough but fair", it more like "f**k you, go figure it out or go look online". Tunic jerks you around on purpose and hides key information from you to ... well, jerk you around. My favorite example was that I didn't know you could equip cards for like half the game. The quarry was absolute misery for me without the gas mask (which I had, but couldn't equip because the game never tells you about cards or how to equip them). Then I looked up how to equip cards and the quarry was a complete joke. So, it's not "difficulty" here, it's BS. It's a waste of my time. Tunic becomes unfairly hard after the 3 keys when you're a ghost and I switched to "no fail mode" to finish the game because I wasn't having fun anymore.
    Both look amazing and sound amazing. DD's story is far easier to understand but Tunic's is obtuse and not clear to me (yes, I've looked it up). Both worlds are incredible. I recommend DD to everyone. I do not recommend Tunic unless you are really into obtuse BS masquerading as "difficulty". DD encourages you to try, try again, and when you finally put that boss down, it feels good. Tunic puts up roadblock after roadblock without any real payoff. The Ruin Guard is a joke once you figure out the gimmick - it's still a tedious fight. The Librarian is a fair boss and I like him, just like the Scavenger Boss. But I would not say the same for the Heir (who has too much BS).

    My problem with the "souls-like" genre is the git gud gamer culture around them, and how they ignore one of the best advancements in game design: the ability to select difficulty from an options menu.
    Death's Door looks amazing, though. I might pick it up when it goes on sale.

    • @Archflip
      @Archflip 3 года назад

      I feel like it's not so much an advancement as just a matter of preference. To have only one difficulty is more a curated and specific experience, whereas tweakable difficulty is more accessible. They both have their trade-offs. Not every game strives for a one-size-fits-all approach.

    • @CiaphasKirby
      @CiaphasKirby 3 года назад

      In the Dark Souls series specifically, the difficulty is actually tied in to the story. You aren't the chosen one, there have been countless attempts before you (or after you). Every player that decides they can't or won't finish the game is another undead that went hollow in the attempt.
      It's a fun meta narrative.

    I dunno, Death's Door isn't Souslike to me, it's part of this genre of top-down, "fixed camera", action-adventure/action-rpg that spans Ys: the Oath in Felghana (and Ys Origins), Crosscode, Hyper Light Drifter, Bastion (and all Supergiant's games), and to a lesser extent, all 2D Zelda games (which employ the same exploration and puzzle notes but are less combat intensive). It's a weirdly specific niche but I'm glad there are people building upon this niche, and I hope to contribute to it someday. I feel that this sort of game comfortably straddles a line between the open world and the linear setpiece, and by limiting their scope, they manage to create these budget 3D labyrinths where camera angle isn't an issue and combat is fast paced and intense. I hope to see more.

    They both seem combat-heavy. Zelda created a world of RPG with characters going about their lives and talking to them to set up quests and generally interact with the story of the world on a social/conversational level to progress it. There's no footage of that in Death's Door or Tunic though both look very very good for graphics and combat.

    We really need to come to an agreement as to what a "soulslike" is and is not, cause to me what makes a souls game gameplay wise is not the checkpoints mechanic on it's own; I think a good souls game has a combat system that makes you consider your attacks and distance (instead of just running in and mashing attack) and rewards you for exploring their worlds.
    Code Vein is one example of this; despite having skills like a traditional RPG (Not just magic like Dark Souls, think of something like a bash that multiplies your damage) you have to take your distance and measure your hits (always having a partner doesn't change the fact you can die like an idiot for rushing in), specially on bosses, where you also have to take into account your skills/stamina resources to dodge accordingly.
    Remnant: From The Ashes is the best example since not only does it have the souls formula, it drastically changes it in favor of gunplay (you can go melee too if you want) but you still have to measure your hits (kind of) since there are armored enemies and weakspots; unless you melee you don't need to factor stamina on your attacks, but it doesn't mean you can just shoot like crazy since you need bullets (and certain weapons don't have that many).
