I have no interest in watching weak, fragile, entitled self-indulgent young people who whine, make excuses, and hide behind drugs and claims of mental problems. Number one, they haven’t ever tried to do anything for themselves; and number two, it’s boring and irritating.

My comment is for YaYa. I was an old single adoptive mom at 42 & 47. I had a house, car, Masters degree and decent job and no bad debt. The most expensive years of parenting are ahead of you and you’ll be trying or needing to retire at the same time they are getting launched with college or job training and hopefully, financial independence but that can take awhile. Now I am 69 and I live on very little. My best advice is to become incredibly frugal and don’t count on future money or expecting to make more or student loan forgiveness. Be realistic about the now! I hope the best for you and your kids.

One of the private schools I got into gave me an immediate scholarship of $26K, which is nowhere near the amount I got at the state university. But the tuition was also $40K and required on campus housing for the first 2 years (an extra 10k a year). The extra funding means nothing if its quite a bit less than tuition. He's absolutely right about what happens when people get extra cash and they haven't learned the valuable lessons. We saw it during the 3.5-year student debt payment freeze. People didn't take advantage of it and pay off the debt interest free. They used the freed up cash to go into debt elsewhere and ended up in an even worse position, because now the student debt payments are due again and it's another payment on top of other payments they took on during the freeze. Stupid on stupid.

She mentioned it very briefly, but it’s been something I just had to deal with two weeks ago with my father and is a bit of advice I’d like to share to any parents out there. You can prepay your funeral arrangements. Each year the price of funerals increases, so it can lock in the lower price. Also, if a nursing home is ever involved, it’s money that they cannot touch, because there are situations that can arise where the child has to pay entirely for the parents funeral because their funds have run out. On top of the financial side of it, it’s just one less thing they have to worry about when the time comes.
