I know this is 4 months old, but the whole thing is that when you're married, the two people are functionally one person, so the money is both of theirs. So during the divorce, it makes sense for the money for both people's legal fees & stuff come from that "pool" of money, cuz they're not actually split yet, at that point.
This dude was willing to actually sell things he realized he didn’t need. One of the only guests I ever remember doing that. I really respect this guy and am wishing him the best. You’ve got this!
As a divorced mom of two who doesn't get child support and paid the thousands for my lawyer, I feel your pain! I do want to say that as stressful as the debt is, be sure you're allowing time with your daughter in this process! She wont understand your effort at her age, only if you were present in her day to day. You got this!
@raleighman3000 Do you not understand divorce??? When the woman makes more than the man you don't get child support, sometimes you have to pay them regardless of the custody. The system is broken for divorcee's with kids.
@@life_of_laurel8602that's what I said in a previous comment here, that the child support system intends to milk money out of parents. In the majority of cases the mother gets custody, dad pays child support. And I was called sexist. Your case is very particular and not the norm. The whole system is rigged
Exactly what I was thinking. I think maybe Caleb’s so focused on the money, which is very important don’t get me wrong, but this man also needs to see his kid. The girl already doesn’t have the mother in the picture very much. She needs her dad!
I feel like Uber and doordash between gigs would be a good idea for this guy. Keeps the schedule open for better gigs while also filling up the free time
I made 50k last year as a single father only working 4 days a week doing a similar job (Gopuff). If I worked every single day I could've made closer to 100k (every city's market is very different)
This is a very volatile gig, especially if you use a car as your transportation. The cost of gas and increased mileage on the car can exceed what you make from something like uber, or breakeven. But in some situations its a great option, that might actually be a net positive for him.
This guy needs to get to homeschool programs. I did homeschool with my son and alllll the music programs and instruction was always full. And he could even work mornings! Wish this guy the best! Keep being a great dad.
I guess I should share what we did- we got an instructor to come to a house, we had 5 kids (all same skill level, beginners, same age-ish), split the cost 5 ways (paid at the beginning of the month, so if you were sick or on vacation too bad for you!) met every Wednesday, Friday morning and 1.5 hrs each session so 3 hrs a week. But if this guy could get even 3 or 4 groups going that would be money he could make during the week and during school hours. And he could keep his one on ones in the evenings.
I wish him well on his journey. Can’t even imagine what it’s like to be a single dad in 2023. I feel like He would KILL it as a bartender, he gives off those vibes
If you work at the YMCA, theyll give you an extra discount on the childcare - plus they open so early that you could work the fitness floor or something until noon. Very flexible hours.
This guy is a breath of fresh air compared to some of the people that come on this show 😂 I really hope he can turn his situation around and enjoy a stress-free future with his little girl!
Suggestion: tap in to the homeschool community. That way you can offer lessons during normal school hours. Us homeschoolers appreciate when there’s classes/lessons during the morning and early afternoon 👍🏽
Caleb is SO aware of the real costs and responsibilities it takes to be a parent. This needs to be talked about more! We need more education about what it really takes-financially and emotionally to be a good parent. If Caleb ever has stinky smelly kids I’m sure he’ll be a great dad.
I went through it, too. $22,000 divorce from 2016-2018. Got custody of my then-two-year-old daughter. Had to borrow money for the whole process and was six figures in total debt by the end. But it was worth it. Got a new job a few months after it ended. Income went way up and I started attacking all my debt like there was no tomorrow. Three years later, I was debt free, saving for her college and building wealth. Praying for ya, Lester. You can do this!!
So who did you message on Instagram to help you trade stocks? I always see comments on RUclips suggesting a great trader who can help you become financially free, like I see you have already done! I am joking obviously. Those people and comments are all scammers
I think many of us needed this episode after watching Boogie2988 make up excuses for 2 hours straight. We're rooting for you, guy! Hope he can grind this debt down and move on with his life. God bless you for taking care of your family.
Much love and respect man. I’ve been in family court 6 yrs, spend 35k, 4 different lawyers and finally got 50-50 with his grandmother. The mom lied on the birth certificate. he was 3 when I found out -now 9. Just getting 50-50 was hell but finally a perfect situation for him. It was worth every cent, heartache and troubles. Family is everything & priceless. ❤
@@user-vg8ox3he1i it was the mothers mom but you’re right I shouldn’t have had to fight at all. I took a dna test and he came back mine, then I had to fight to get any rights whatsoever, then visitation, then 50-50. Courts are biased and side with the woman in most cases, even if it is a grandmother.
Probably the first guest that I have seen who is realistic, accepting and aware of his current situation.......and prepared to do something about it. You have got this mate as you are very levelheaded.
As someone who spent way too much money in attorney fees, I understand how it just spirals out of control. Just wrapped up a 3 year lawsuit and I’m out ~22k after “winning”. It’s brutal watch everything get drained away and things get pushed back for seemingly no reason. Luckily I was able to recover some of my money (unlike a divorce/custody battle) but the hole it put me felt like I was ruined. I feel for him and wish him the best of luck
@@ericmason1285 Not always. It's typically a lower risk for high costs, but claiming that it works better just isn't true in many cases. It always depends on the specific situation and whether both parties can set aside personal interests to solve the root problem.

This was an amazing audit! I relate to this one a lot because I wasn't able to pick up a second job to pay off my debt until my son was old enough due to a lack of support. Amazingly, Lester has such a supportive family and I really hope he can pick up a second job to pay down his debt. It's a double-edged sword because you're doing something to benefit your family's future but feel terrible as a parent for not spending as much time with them while they're still young. Keep fighting the good fight Lester, your daughter will notice it as she grows up. ❤
So tough - it's trading one thing for another. Just gotta hope the trade ends up benefiting them more in the long run. Sadly that's not always the case. Parents are always stuck between a rock and a hard place.
What bills were you paying that stopped you from getting a second job so you wouldn't lose government assistance? I am genuinely curious, this is not an attack
@@ThePeacePlantI didn’t have government assistance. I couldn’t get a second job while my son was so young because I didn’t have a babysitter and childcare in the US is extremely expensive so my second job income would end up going towards that and not debt. That’s no longer an issue though because he is old enough to watch himself if/when I work a second job.
Another receptive guest! Open, honest, and realistic about why he is in his situation. Needs to be a bit more aggressive towards getting that job and figuring out the schedule after that! I really think he will get this all taken care of!
He might want to check out being a stagehand at some of the local venues in Austin. It's in the "live music" scene but they usually get a "minimum" rate and are typically late at night for load outs. Definitely a great way for a musician to supplement their income in a town like Austin!
14:12 time stamp. His dad can help him out for 3 nights a week. Stagehand work is typically "on call" and a great side hustle for musicians. If he's making OT since it's later at night, he would probably hit $30/hr at OT with a 4 hour minimum call. That's an extra $1200-1400/month (for three nights a week). Just giving an idea that might benefit him in the long run. If he lives in Austin (because we lived in Austin for 5 years) there are numerous venues that WILL hire him on the spot to stagehand nights. *@@christinateresabrown

Am I missing something? You're both women, what cost you so much money, just a divorce attorney? Didn't the money you both got in the divorce pay for the lawyer and then some? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm a single male.

I was a single parent and one huge cost that Caleb didn’t ask about was health insurance for him and his child , especially since he doesn’t have a full time job that might offer that benefit. Even through the marketplace, it costs a lot. He also needs life insurance since he has a child. I hope he can get to a better place.
Hey Caleb. Appreciate the quality content and consistency as always. Would love to see more grown *ss adults on the show, like that 40ish lady that had $200k in student loans. We need to know what those paths down the road look like. :)
Or maybe don't take out so many loans. I'm 26 and own my house and vehicles and have zero debt. And have over 10k in savings that's not counting my checking. It's not hard to be successful. Stop spending on stupid sh*t. I never went to college and make $40 an hour and once a week get payed $60 an hour. Which each day is 10 hour days. I make over 1k a week sometimes 2k. But I will be moving up in pay starting the beginning of the year and will be up to 45 an hour that's almost 70 an hour on overtime days. So yeah I don't need college.

I would've been in a much better place in life (and honest my situation isn't that bad and I make good money). One of the most important channels on youtube. Just a glimpse... 2 months ago I charged $2500 on doordash, in the last month I've only spent $75 budgeted and under budget. Caleb is doing important work and changing lives!

Raised by a (much younger than this guy) single father. Until high school I saw him before school and after 7pm. My grandma and aunt helped tremendously and he worked his butt off to provide a solid home and eventually became a very successful business owner. Looking back I am incredibly thankful for the stability even if we wish we had more time together in childhood we have time together now. My half-sister got the oppsite side raised by our mother that barely worked, bounced rentals and schools, never had any stability and it effects her to this day. She has more time with a parent but it didnt translate into well being.
@@Amanda-xx7sjyes a very strong support system as well. The biggest difference was truly Dad decided it was up to him to work hard and make a difference. Mom decided fun and doing something that made her happy always took precedence over ability to pay bills and provide. She was always saying 'it will work out eventually' wiyh no effort on her part to make things work. All of her children raised in her home went without a lot growing up. And tofay they anticipate financially taking care of her as she ages.
Look at hotels for night audit. They usually have a full time person who needs 2 days a week off that you could cover. Plus extra for this sick/vacation days.
As a fellow musician, who can make really good hourly, but it's not as steady as a 9-5... an answer is online lessons and/or increasing your marketing. Lessons for students overseas might work with the 'overnight' hours and are in high demand.
What a sweet humble guy, one of the more admirable guests calab has had on. He has a great heart and him and his daughter will be just fine god willing 🙏
Wish this guy all the best but it reminds me of what Dave Ramsey has said many times. Marriage is grand, divorce is about 50 grand. Be careful who you stand at the altar with
Just started but very interested in this episode. I went through a custody case for about a 2 years, costed about 15k. Got nothing accomplished, no improvements in the agreements, it was a shit show from beginning to end. The first lawyer just ghosted after $2500 retainer. Court system is Texas is a lose lose situation.
A grandma friend at work had an anonymous donor (we think maybe the attorney or even the judge) pay her bill in full! She even got her retainer back!! This was in Tarrant County ….
I appreciate how this episode highlights the bias the judicial system has against male fathers who are genuinely trying to take care of their kids. No child support or assistance provided. I wish nothing but the best for this father and his daughter. May they prosper and be happy!!
Seriously. He pays the child’s full bills and yet receives no support from the mother. If the genders were reversed he would either be required to pay child support or end up in jail
It makes me sick how much lawyers overcharge fathers involved in custody litigation. It's been that way for a very long time. I'm a woman but have always felt fathers end up with a raw deal.
A commenter just highlighted that she also doesn’t get child support from her ex-husband. The system is broken but that doesn’t mean that all fathers always pay child support.
I added a similar suggestion on a comment where some people suggested connecting with home schoolers. Even adults who what to learn and are teleworking may have flexibility time during his available hours to do lessons via Zoom.
Fake🥸 Come on be honest. You say this everywhere but you just switch the names up. Can you come up with anything else to say or atleast say all the other RUclipsrs that are your “Three favorite channels”😂
When he was talking about not wanting to switch to a 9-5 or other FT job that's not in his current career field because it wouldn't bring much more than his current income home, I kept thinking...... yeah, but you're not paying taxes or setting anything aside for them right now. If you had a FT W2 job, you'd be bringing more home, and it would be post-tax. And you'd likely have some benefits either provided or given at a lower cost than you're currently paying while self-employed.
Hey Caleb. Grandma here who is always available to pick up grandkids to and from school and to after school activities for free. I think $25 a month Spotify thank you to his father and sister is very minimal. To ask them to chip in $8 each is kind of a slap in their faces. Just a thought.
I like this guy a lot. I agree with other comments recommending things like door dash while kiddo is at school and between lessons. He’s a good dad and a good guy, I have faith he will pull through.
With his income the way it is, he may qualify for government assistance. He's a 2 person household with a low income. The YMCA often offers financial assistance for low income families as well.
Going to child custody court was the most stressful things I’ve ever done. It was all worth it but it does a toll on you mentally & physically, especially financially. We push through, don’t complain & make it everyday for our kids. Take care of yourself! I’m glad he has a support system. Look into providing homeschool lessons through a local group!
Great audit! I’m a pro musician, so I get it. I make about 75% of my money in a 6 month period, so I need a summer fund on top of an emergency fund. For Lester-check with the school district if they need any guitar consultants. I guarantee there are a bunch of teachers who are not guitarists teaching guitar classes and they would love your help. Go in on your own time, help students, and get paid by the district or the school if they have the funds.
This episode was hard to get through because as much as I respect Caleb, he doesn’t understand all that goes into parenthood. He suggests overnight work and leaning on free childcare way too much. A 4 year old sleeping at grandpas a lot may not be feasible and who’s to say grandpa is willing to do that? Or that dad wants to do that? Idk. That always just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
@@primepossum6997oh I totally get it. I just think there are alternatives to overnight, and it shouldn’t be used as a blanket one-size-fits-all suggestion
I noticed that. Also if he gets government assistance he can't make a certain of money or he will lose government assistance, so him working more hours or a second job as he suggested is not a solution for this dudes specific situation
I truly hope this young father gets ontop of this as im sure he would want more time with his child rather having to work so much. Keep going and hopefully easier days ahead and time to build beautiful moments with your child
I have worked in the middle of the night and had full time job it is not fun and can be dangerous! A kid is another world …I feel like someone who actually is a parent would be more qualified to speak on this
Please Caleb can you make a comprehensive solo video going over all the rules and recommendations of what to invest in and a timeline of how much you shoukd have saved for retirement. It would be so helpful to get all of this information straight from you!
Start with a 401k max company match and extra if you can do the same with a Roth IRA. Save what you can and open an account with a financial advisor then put what you can into the account and they'll have an investing strategy that will compound into bigger yields. My broker account made like 8% this year with the outfit I'm investing with. What you want for retirement is up to you, my retirement account has a calculator of projected monthly retirement income from all sources (401k, ira, SSC, dividends etc) if that helps.
It is ludicrous how messed up the custody courts are to men. His ex doesn’t have to pay child support? If it was him on that end, I’m sure they’d make him pay.
How did a judge authorize $0 for child support? I'm a single dad as well. I'm supposed to get like $300 a month. Needless to say she owes almost $20k in support. I'll never get it so I have had to figure things out on my own.
Women have the unwritten right to ignore any family court ruling if it doesn't favor them, it's unfair but that's the way our legislators have made it, tragic in the extreme to see how far our society has fallen
Ensure the IRS is notified and you will eventually receive any refunds she would be due in the future. If she ends up receiving Social Security benefits, they would be offset.
As a teacher wanting to get nights full. I would check the worldwide teaching site for guitar lessons. They do speak english in GB and Australia(meaning different timezone). It might be not much but still it's in the hours you are ready to take for working. This is one option that opens a new revenue❤
All the blessings to this man!!! As a single mom with an ex who doesn’t visit, send money, nothing - it brings me joy to know there’s dads like this man in the world who are really showing up for their child no matter what 🙏🏼
Honestly if he has from 7:30am to noon open, the perfect job (in my opinion) would be doing something like uber eats. In my experience, in my area, most of the career people who work in food delivery start around lunch time, so you can get your pick of the morning orders. If he or his daughter are ever sick, he can just not clock in. My auto insurance went up like $8 extra per month, which you can make in no time. 🍀 good luck, you've got this bruv!
I used to deliver for fun and morning's were always my favourite! I'd park between Starbucks and A&W and all the deliveries would be 1 mile away and almost always good tips! Haha
As many have said look in the homeschooling community for teaching lessons. The homeschooling community in Denton is very strong and Denton is also its own little music community. Really would be a great side gig and maybe even become full time.
Keep fighting the good fight! You’re a good father and good people always prosper in the end. Your daughter will recognize that as she grows. This episode is so insightful and relatable. Honestly just can’t give up when you have a child 🙏🏽 I’m currently 28 and separated from my husband for a month now and he hasn’t tried to see our daughter. He actually won’t even let me get her things, from his house (legally), that I bought with my money. I’ve literally been starting from scratch with my daughter and just started working from home. She was born late October of this year.
It makes me wonder why he won't let you get anything from his house. I feel you are leaving information out that made him not let you get anything from his house, sort of that you may be a problem as much as much as you make the father out to be. Please enlighten me if my thought is wrong.

This dude was willing to actually sell things he realized he didn’t need. One of the only guests I ever remember doing that. I really respect this guy and am wishing him the best. You’ve got this!
This guy seems super humble and I think we are all pulling for him!! I hope his situation improves quickly!
As a divorced mom of two who doesn't get child support and paid the thousands for my lawyer, I feel your pain! I do want to say that as stressful as the debt is, be sure you're allowing time with your daughter in this process! She wont understand your effort at her age, only if you were present in her day to day. You got this!
Where's the dad? In jail?
@raleighman3000 Do you not understand divorce??? When the woman makes more than the man you don't get child support, sometimes you have to pay them regardless of the custody. The system is broken for divorcee's with kids.
@@life_of_laurel8602that's what I said in a previous comment here, that the child support system intends to milk money out of parents.
In the majority of cases the mother gets custody, dad pays child support. And I was called sexist. Your case is very particular and not the norm.
The whole system is rigged
@@life_of_laurel8602whoever gets the kids should always get child support… such a ridiculous system. Hope you’re pulling through.
Keeps the schedule open for better gigs while also filling up the free time
I agree
I made 50k last year as a single father only working 4 days a week doing a similar job (Gopuff). If I worked every single day I could've made closer to 100k (every city's market is very different)
This is a very volatile gig, especially if you use a car as your transportation. The cost of gas and increased mileage on the car can exceed what you make from something like uber, or breakeven. But in some situations its a great option, that might actually be a net positive for him.
Agreed!

This guy needs to get to homeschool programs. I did homeschool with my son and alllll the music programs and instruction was always full. And he could even work mornings! Wish this guy the best! Keep being a great dad.
I hope he sees this!!!!
Commenting to boost this, that's a phenomenal idea and I really want him to see this, or have Caleb send the idea his way
oh that sounds like it would be a good fit. Hope he sees it and checks it out!
This is a great idea!
Upvoted 👍 great suggestion
Yes. And if you can do an orchestra or matching band you'll be able to increase your hourly
Caleb is SO aware of the real costs and responsibilities it takes to be a parent. This needs to be talked about more! We need more education about what it really takes-financially and emotionally to be a good parent. If Caleb ever has stinky smelly kids I’m sure he’ll be a great dad.
Usually people that are more aware of the real costs and responsibilities of parenthood, tend to decide go childfree, me included 😅
Good for you!👏👏👏 And your child!
So who did you message on Instagram to help you trade stocks? I always see comments on RUclips suggesting a great trader who can help you become financially free, like I see you have already done!
I am joking obviously. Those people and comments are all scammers
6 figures debt cleared in 3 years? 😮
You got this dude!! I hope you read the comment section and get some motivation. You're a great dad and you have your whole life ahead of you ✊️

35k??????? Those numbers are ridiculous

why should a FATHER have to fight for custody over his GRAND-MOTHER. That is insane!!
@@user-vg8ox3he1i it was the mothers mom but you’re right I shouldn’t have had to fight at all. I took a dna test and he came back mine, then I had to fight to get any rights whatsoever, then visitation, then 50-50.
Should've just done mediation. It's like $100 and works even better than attorneys.
Not bad for 3 yrs.
@@ericmason1285 Not always. It's typically a lower risk for high costs, but claiming that it works better just isn't true in many cases. It always depends on the specific situation and whether both parties can set aside personal interests to solve the root problem.
@@26Sundrops sorry, have you actually done mediation?
Neither party can just be like "no." There's a 3rd party, the mediator, who forces an agreement, and if one party is not agreeable, they'll override them and it gets out into a court order.
@@ericmason1285 I sued multiple parties over a house I bought. There was no way to not bring lawyers into it. I went up against a title company, a lawyer representing the title company and the seller
He could find a work from home job
God bless you for taking responsibility and care of your family
What bills were you paying that stopped you from getting a second job so you wouldn't lose government assistance? I am genuinely curious, this is not an attack
@@ThePeacePlantI didn’t have government assistance. I couldn’t get a second job while my son was so young because I didn’t have a babysitter and childcare in the US is extremely expensive so my second job income would end up going towards that and not debt. That’s no longer an issue though because he is old enough to watch himself if/when I work a second job.
I’m rooting for this guy. I know he can turn his situation around
He has a 4 year old, he can’t work nights.

My ex is the reason I had to take on $30k in debt...and it was technically not a messy divorce. I feel for him.
Same! I had an "amicable" divorce and I paid $22k! Ridiculous!
Am I missing something? You're both women, what cost you so much money, just a divorce attorney? Didn't the money you both got in the divorce pay for the lawyer and then some?

There really should be state-funded litigation lawyers like there is for criminal defense. It’s horrific that people HAVE to pay out of pocket for for civil cases when they can be just as important as criminal cases.
But then everyone has to pay for it. More people should learn law and then donate their expertise
We have that in Europe. It’s not a perfect system but better than forcing people into debt for years or decades.

Really cheering for this dude. Hope he comes back for a follow up and we can all celebrate with him together.
Did your mom have any extended family to help like your dad did? That makes a huge difference.
I really like how Caleb always says 'we' and 'us'... he makes it feel like he's in it with them.
it’s a great psychological tactic. Makes it so you’re not seen as attacking someone, but rather helping and being a part of the conversation.

One of my favorite episodes, so much helpful information
I appreciate how this episode highlights the bias the judicial system has against male fathers who are genuinely trying to take care of their kids. No child support or assistance provided. I wish nothing but the best for this father and his daughter. May they prosper and be happy!!
You don't have to say male father's lol. If you're a father you're obviously a male. If you think you're a female father you have some serious issues.
Seriously. He pays the child’s full bills and yet receives no support from the mother. If the genders were reversed he would either be required to pay child support or end up in jail
@@Diashi1267Nailed it, flip the genders and the comments would be WILD.
So proud of this man. Full custody and doing his best for his daughter

I thought the same thing.
Me too. He needs to lean on his family a lot right now, so no need to cause any friction on something so trivial.
He's such a positive guy, I wish him the best
Yeah but what's the alternative? Just continue to fall behind on debt, never get ahead, and then rely on your kid to keep you going in retirement
people have blind spots, and they cannot see their own blind spots.

What? She could go to jail for that, or a paycheck garnishment. Get on the ball.

I’m currently 28 and separated from my husband for a month now and he hasn’t tried to see our daughter. He actually won’t even let me get her things, from his house (legally), that I bought with my money. I’ve literally been starting from scratch with my daughter and just started working from home. It makes me wonder why he won't let you get anything from his house. I feel you are leaving information out that made him not let you get anything from his house, sort of that you may be a problem as much as much as you make the father out to be. Please enlighten me if my thought is wrong.

I also asked him why his family didn’t come to visit our baby at this hospital? She was born premature and we were hospitalized for two weeks, that set him off.
Good people don’t always prosper in the end. That is a platitude. Sometimes karma is busy. That is why we need to be prepared or take lessons to heart. Good luck to you on your fresh start.
Its guests like this that light a fire under me. He’s doing the best he can and he’s going to get through this! No excuses, just needs a little help getting there! More guests like this guy! 😊
Why doesn’t he just do Uber eats from 7am to noon. It seems like it would work for him .
He addressed that near the end.
I’m late to this but this guest is my favourite! He’s so relatable and it feels like he just needs a break. He’s causing no dramas and is making the best out of a crappy situation that he’s been left in. Really hope it works out for him and his daughter X x
Calebbbbb never disappoints! Keep at it! :)
I like that these vids come out on my work from home days
