This is one of the best portable ham radio antennas I've used

- Recorded a few weeks back. Here I try the 49:1 end fed wire ham radio antenna with a shorter wire for 40m and 20m with great success. I stayed overnight in the bunk barn which is my favourite overnight stop when the weather is unpredictable for sleeping under canvas.
I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My RUclips channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.
I'm a huge fan of the IC-7200. I've only ever heard one once but ever since, I've wanted one! They just have everything I want in a HF radio. Great video, as always. Nice to catch up on one from a while back!
And as you asked, no I don't leave my teabag in. Always brew Black tea up to 4 mins at 100c. No longer 😅
Fantastic Carl. Weather is starting to get cold for camping out, be more camping barn adventures!
Nice video. Yes antennas are awful lot of fun. 73 Leo
Thanks Carl, another interesting video particularly for those of us that are relatively new to the hobby. Nice to see you making antennas and not reviewing too-expensive-for-majority out of the box kit! Keep up the good work. 73
Hi Carl, a great video I enjoyed your making the antenna on, site boy was that enjoyable and informative, and I also enjoyed your cooking segment also, we do have to have fortification when playing radio, thank you for sharing, and keep' em coming.
That's a great result. Gotta love the EFHW :) I've got my 40m wires cut to 20m, and normally end up folding back about 20cm, so I guess 19.8m is about right length for that frequency. Strangely, I've got one made from DX10, another from a no-name steel reinforced copper wire, and the last is sotabeams lightweight antenna wire. I'd have thought that the difference in velocity factor would have resulted in different lengths, but I guess they must all be fairly similar :)
Fabulous video Carl!!
Another very informative video Carl I myself am always experimenting with the long wires with good results, I personally use the braided quality mainly for strength but get equally good results with the coated copper as you have.
The Chinese food looked amazing so did the brew...keep them coming Carl I check daily for the next instalment...73s de G7WBB
Great idea of using the bungee cord to peg it down to absorb wind flex.
Thanks for the video Carl. The EFHW has become my portable go to antenna and if you have it cut for 40m, it should also work on 20,15 and 10 without a tuner.
Nice one Carl 👍 IMO you can't beat a full size antenna and a lot of them are are not difficult to set up in a short time.
Is that your new camper van Carl 🤣 great vid as usual buddy 👍 73 Gm4zji Chris
With a 9:1 a length of 16.12M works very well
THANKS GREAT WORK.. DES CREAN,, BELFAST,, IRELAND
Great one I see you experience with the EFHW is better than mine 40M in length it should be good for 80 too but its a PITA .
I think I shall give it another go in light of your efforts or at least take it mobile! M0XJA
My inflatable antenna doesn't work well. It is very sensitive to ground and the way the cable lies on the floor. I made QRP contacts with FT8 on 30m but it is really poor with TX. For RX it works, but not TX.
Hanged it from trees, poles, windows... the same.
I'm struggling with it to be honest
@@M0SZT Same. RX is great but not had much luck with contacts or RBN.
I remember Tom saying it's important to use it with a tuner.
Man I really enjoy your videos when you mix Ham radio and cook. Let me ask you, how you are adding the ginger? Shredded? Do you combine it with curry? I do use curry a LOT while I'm cooking. And I'm not from India hi hi.
Talking about antennas, the 49:1 EFHW are my main option when I go camping or POTA.
If I'm transmitting from the beach, nothing beats a quarter wave whip vertical and a Ground copper rod in the sand. Being QRP I've got JAPAN in 17 meter 5 watts. (I'm in Tampa FL.) Australia 5 watts 10 meter.
Cheers, for this meal I sliced them across the stem very finely so they almost melt in the sauce or at least lose that strong ginger heat.
Hi Carl like your youtube clips 73s vk3ut Greg
Who was that dodgy contact 6 minutes into the video?? Seriously Carl it was great to make the contact with you.I was operating mobile from Beachy head near Eastbourne running 100 watts to my Ampro whip for 40 mtrs.

Fab, wow I din't know it was an ampro whip, even better!
Great video thanks. I like this better than most cooking channels 😎antenna analyzers with a side of Chinese soy ginger. I might persuade my wife to watch 🙏👍73
Carl you forgot to mention the VK3 you worked at 7am the next morning, When your camera was packed away ready to leave the bunk barn.
Yes that was my first VK contact 😁
@@M0SZT We do say, Be heard on the hf bands with an M1ECC Antenna. Seriously our antennas perform very well, We do extensive testing of them before they are released for sale.
Nice work.... sounded like pretty great results from a much more manageable sized antenna.
I'm glad you left the tofu at home.....🤢
carl i use a brookite 9m pole and its better than the dx commander pole i have had it holding my end fed and inverted v. up for over 4 years and i have had no problem with it and for only 20 pound check them out on e,bay great video by the way carl from m7byf
Nice video as always Carl.
Just a quick question. What make is the 49:1 Un-Un ? I am looking for something to use in a small garden for 40 etc. 73's JonP G1JSF

You can do it KQ4CD Paul
What radio do you use KQ4CD Paul
Icom IC-7200
O yeah did you need an external tuner for that antenna ?
not for 40, 20 and 17m
What analyzer are you using is that a 35 zoom
yes best thing I've bought in ages
@@M0SZT I love my AA-55 zoom! Great analyzers! Worth the cost. Cheers Carl!
O yes you are doing the cooking at the next opportunity ;-P
I know what you mean, you really have to watch those 52 year olds!! :)
What headset and mic are you using Carl? Another fine video!
It's a Heil headset, it's quite sensitive to RF in the shack but works really well otherwise
@@M0SZT Thanks Carl!
SOTABEAM 26AWG will handle 100W easy, allot lighter than what you put on!
