    They are using spring loaded push in connections because they tolerate much more vibrations and are self-tightening. A screwed connection could loosen over time. This is pretty standard here in Germany when it comes to electrics.
    Greets from Germany!

    • @ToolTeardowns
      @ToolTeardowns  6 лет назад

      I had thought a screwed connection might be more susceptible to loosening from vibration and that might be why.

      @anxiousmerchant4129 6 лет назад

      to add, soldered wire on screw terminals are not legal for grid operation.
      I honestly don't know why they did solder instead of using Ferrels

    • @HVBasti
      @HVBasti 6 лет назад

      Anxious Merchant because they use spring loaded terminals and therefore solder is legal and easier to apply.

    I have the paddle switch version of this angle grinder (wp8-115) and it has held up very well for over five years. Two of which I was in a trade school so it was used every single day. I was always worried going in that the clutch would wear out over time and it would lose its ability to cut, but so far that hasn’t been the case at all. The trade school I went to is actually what turned me on to the grinders. The instructor said that when they first opened up multiple companies approached them wanting to give them sample products, grinders, welders, welding hoods, grinding discs, so on. I cannot remember off hand all the brands of angle grinders, but I know the instructor brought one of his personal metabos that had been already used and abused for years, tested it for a few months against the others that were supplied, and the metabo still outlasted the others. I now own two and will not go back to cheap angle grinders. If you do even the slightest amount of welding or metal work you really should invest in good tools, and one of the most used tools in a metal shop is the angle grinder.

      I have a 10 year old Metabo w14-125 that I have replaced the brushes on 3 times and it has outlasted more DeWalts than I can remember although the bearings are starting to get noisy now.

    Nice video, I rebuild gear boxes and plastic shims are very common, Just like the clear plastic ones. They do flake apart on gearboxes I disassemble that have been in service since the 1970s. But, they were holding the tolerance the whole time, And I’ve never seen them be the cause of failure. Pretty impressive.

    I love the metabo grinders. When you're using it in a heavy environement thats when you really get to see the difference. The quick change nut design and having the clutch is the best part of the metabo. The clutch just saves your grinding and cutting wheels from exploding when it gets wedged. The quick change nut makes it so easy that I've been spoiled.
    When i use my milwaukee or bosh they are strictly for just grinding or using a wire wheel because i hate having to use a tool to take them on and off because its so hard. Milwakee had an update on the gearing and went to the straight gears like the metabo instead of having the ring gear type and it feels a lot smoother. If i had to choose it would be the metabo hands down. Metabo just saves you from being jerked around all day. Great video!

    Knowing now that most tools are made in China, it's kinda a toss up of which to choose. I've been buying several metabo tools lately because of build quality and better part choices. Like chord type and length,etc.
    Your vids are very beneficial. Keep up the good work.

    The brush length might be the same but the width is significantly different. A narrow brush will wear faster because of the smaller contact area. It will also have higher electrical resistance leading to higher temperature. You did mention harder material but the pressure from the spring will be important because it will affect wear on BOTH the commutator and the brush. Brushes are replaceable, commutator not so easy. BTW, you’re getting “coil” springs and “flat spiral” spring confused. Coil springs more commonly refer to a constant diameter such as the springs in your car’s suspension.

  • @obfuscated3090
    @obfuscated3090 6 лет назад +3

    The plastic plate isn't an an issue on Metabos. I maintained many of them and my personal 6" Metabo is ten years old and finally managed to wear the gear teeth enough to require replacement. Under thirty bucks and the rest of the grinder (including brushes!) needed nothing.

    Spirl cut is stronger in most cases in one direction, truck axles will be reversed front from back as loads change heavy use. Straight shear easier however spiral needs a good contact with pinion. I do appreciate you taking time and money to do this. The clutch setup is now appearing on higher end grinders. As is soft start, oddly half the tool guys go oh it seems weak but its safety to not jerk and less fatigue for user. I also like the breaks on grinders and on circular saws. In my area dewalt has been the go to and last. Now makita rat tails were the go to for a long while. Both of my dewalts are made in u.s.a. one was gift and one the wife bought me. I'll say my newest 13 amp is very nice but I highly recommend buying good disk and cutoff wheels. Cheap can come apart and good ones make ok tool work like super star but cheap ones make it a chore.

      related to Fein. I have few of those. The smaller ones 115mm disks are made in China. I was surprised to see that since in their advertising proudly present the brand as the only that does everything in house and have an engineer that takes a tool from bearings and assembles everything 'till the end product. they use plug in connection cuz its easier and faster during the manufacturing. i think metabo its still made in germany. and here are labour very high. if they wanna compete with the chinesium grinder. i took a few older and newer metabo 230 volt grinder appart. i think the older grinder are nicer then the new ones. i would not recommend to cheap out on grinder even if you use the grinder only for 2 minutes in a year. its much nicer and safer to use a good quality tool. u can cheap out on outer things but not on tools.

    I suggest you test angle grinders cutting much thicker scrap, at least 1/2" plate or 1" rod or bar. They'll handle it if you let the cutting disc float on the workpiece and that will be more informative than cutting light stock which any grinder can manage.

    I think it's interesting how sintered metal gears are frowned upon in tool reviews but nearly all top quality stainless knife blades are sintered and more expensive than forged blade steels. Of course Tool Teardowns hints on the primary reasoning in this video in that sintered blade steels can include components to improve the blade characteristics that you simply cant get in forged steel. Just an observation, I guess...

    • @BigBear--
      @BigBear-- 4 года назад

      The difference between sintered powder metal gears and powder metallurgy in knife steels is that the knife steels undergo an additional forging process after the powder is produced. Increasing expense, and producing a very fine grain, but extremely strong steel. Sintered powder gears don’t undergo additional forging, they are simply stamped powder in a die, and then baked to set.

      I was looking for my first grinder. Never needed one til recently. I was specifically looking at the Metabo and a Dewalt.
      Skipping on Milwaukee, even though I really have had great experiences with their products and like them. Skipping on Makita and Bosch based on another tear down I saw of one that was roughly only a year old video.
      Still considering Dewalt, I've had good experience with my wet dry vac and hand sander.
      Most likely going Metabo though.

    Enjoy your videos. So I am looking at two grinders.A Tilswall @$31. a Tacklife @$52. Both have epoxy on the stator,sealed bearings as far I can tell from the pictures/wording on Amazon. Both come with 6 disks, the Tacklife has a case and anti-vibration handle that the Tilswall does not. However the Tacklife is 8.5 amp and the Tilswall is 7 amp. and 12k rpms for both. Is it worth the $21 more to get 1.5 amps ? Would I notice the extra juice of the 1.5 amps? I look forward to your comment? Thank you in advance.

    Great and informative video but. I'm a pipefitter and have seen many people damage these by using the button to stop the disc while it is moving. That it horrible advice and voids the warranty on your grinder should this cause damage. I use gloves and after locking the wheel, I hit the edge of the wheel with my hands in the loosening direction.

    • @ToolTeardowns
      @ToolTeardowns  6 лет назад +2

      You're correct if you're using a normal grinder. However, the directions for the quick-release nut on the Metabo specifically say to stop the disk with the button. You're not voiding your warranty in this case because that's how it's designed to work. Check out Metabo's own video on it here: ruclips.net/video/fs2nmUtfFuY/видео.html.

      Another huge difference in these three is Metabo is the innovator behind many of the features and even pattens which Dewalt and Hercules were only able to emulate after Metabo.
      In the pipeline welding industry of the oil fields if you don't use Metabo you are wasting money.
      The real difference is use an 8" side grinder on 48" high pressure pipe for 12 hrs/day, and you aren't worn to death be the failed ergonomics and torque, etc.

    in right circumstances the cheap HF brand work well, but agree they are junk. a friend has 2 of the HF grinders in a body shop, 1 I opened new 2 years ago, 1 is used only with cutting wheels, the other grinding wheels, I personally have put in 50 + vehicles of cab corners, rear quarters, fender wells, & patches, 2 clip jobs, majority done with them 2 grinders, on the clip I did use a HF reciprocating saw to do rough cuts & to cut clip off donors. the trick is to not load heavy, we only cut sheet metal, or the braces, of several layers of sheet metal, if grinder gets warm sit it down for 30 min & let it cool off, & work on something else. & for grinding all the spot welds, we use the HF grinder to cut close & then a cheap HF air grinder with a 3" 36 grit twist lock to smooth welds.
    at home I have a good selection of grinders, vintage Milwaukee 7" B&D 7" Makita 7" newer Dewalt 7" as well as good & cheap 4 1/2" grinders, but at shop when working I use his tools
