  • Warrior Nun is like how to make the worst chosen one protagonist of all time 101.
    NOTE: Since people keep mentioning this the reason why I said Ava was white-passing was that I don't know her actual ethnic background. I know she is Portuguese and I know she's also Brazillian. She could be white Brazillian, she could not be. I don't know what her parents look like and genetics are weird XD. I am aware there are white Brazilians guys. xx

      Well, next time, do a proper research before commenting on someone's identity background. Not all latina/brazilian has sunkissed skin tone. Not all race has to color in certain way in order to be the race.
      You sounds like a racist.

    • @jessatlife
      @jessatlife 4 года назад +75

      The criticism is missing the point. You can be Latinx, mixed-race, whatever; but if you're white-passing, you can still benefit from white privilege. What she's saying is true. Ava's actress is a white-passing lead surrounded by a predominantly non-white supporting cast, and that looks problematic. IS.
      This idea that if you're Latinx you cannot benefit from white privilege needs to stop.
      And this is coming from a light-skinned, mixed-race Puerto Rican.

      @@cmmiestcat Calling someone white-passing who is white-passing is not racism. And if you don't know the race of someone, but they appear white it's ok to recognize that especially when discussing Hollywood/Film & Television where leads are mostly white/white-passing. It's important to recognize colorism (which prevalent across all communities) and the casting choices of a franchise especially when all of the supporting characters are POC. You're being inflammatory and you should look up the definition of racism. It's best to calm down first and think about what you want to say so that you may communicate effectively

      Hi, Melina! I'm a Portuguese/Brazilian studies scholar, and from an academic perspective, your decision in language was the most accurate choice. What's hard is that the US conception of race/ethnicity is so high strung that white Latinos are not considered white in the US, and once their Latin ethnicity is revealed, they face the same discrimination as non-white Latinos. However, white Latinos are considered white in their countries of origin. I've had friends from Brazil say that they never realized they "weren't white" until they moved to the United States and experienced racism based on ethnic origin. Also, further complicating things, this the fact that the word/ethnicity "latino" has a different definition in North America as it does in South America and in Europe. In the Americas, it is most commonly used to refer to Latin American people, regionally exclusive of certain non-Spanish speaking countries, whereas in Europe, "latino" refers to Portugal, Spain and Italy, and any of their former colonies. It's a much more complicated issue with a lot more nuance than what the comments have shown.

They never said it out loud but it was so heavily implied that it's pretty hard to take any other meaning out of it. That makes me think that maybe they weren't allowed to say it. As an atheist and skeptic, nothing pisses me off more than stubborn skeptics existing in a provably supernatural world. All it does is further that untrue stereotype of skeptics as denialists. If I lived in the world of Warrior Nun, or Supernatural, or X-Files, I wouldn't be a skeptic about that stuff. Granted, I wouldn't "believe in" any of it, either, but that's because I wouldn't have to. I'd be *interacting* with it! It'd be provably, demonstrably, visibly *real*. It'd be leaving testable evidence on reality that scientists could come in and study. There'd be whole fields of science dedicated to it.
    Skepticism is *not* denialism. It is simply questioning a lack of evidence. That's literally it. No good biologist is "skeptical" of Evolution. It's a proven fact. No good climatologist is "skeptical" of Anthropogenic Climate Change. It's a proven fact.
    In the supernatural/paranormal world of Warrior Nun, the existence of said supernatural/paranormal things would be a *proven fact*. Genuine, good, actually scientifically-minded skeptics would not be in denial of their existence. I would very much love for Hollywood to stop playing up that wildly inaccurate stereotype of skeptics.

      She is childish. Her very personality was based around her spitefulness over her situation and in response to her abuse by the nuns. Ava is childish. Her whole thing throughout half the series is that she’s emotionally and socially stunted because she was paralyzed and suck in an orphanage watching tv. She has had no real experiences and no real relationships. I thought the voice over was bad writing too. But I don’t think it makes Ava seem childish is a valid complaint because the character is supposed to be perceived as self centered and childish at least at first.

    Can we also talk about the way they handled language in the show? Maybe it's because I'm Spanish myself but I was cringing the whole show because of this. If you go out of your way to make the show set in Spain, why is everyone speaking in English basically all the time? All the locals speak perfect English, the nuns barely speak Spanish despite living there for years, everyone in that weird science company also speaks English and without an accent... And there were mistakes all the time like having the name of the convent written in English.
    Besides that, I don't hate that it's set in a city like Málaga instead of Madrid or Barcelona. But it is kinda weird that both a super advanced international company and a secret Catholic order whose members presumably travel throughout the world have their headquarters in what's basically a touristy beach city.

He creates a suit that lets him walk, gives powers and fight baddies. But he still lives his normal life in a wheelchair with the secret identity. I felt like the show ignored Ava's actual flaws but kept "calling out" flaws Ava hadn't really shown/had the chance to show? Like, they kept being like "Oh you just dislike the warrior nuns immediately but you haven't even gotten to know them well enough to know that they're actually sympathetic with a tragic backstory" when literally she had known the nuns for like 2 days and they were hostile to her the entire time, and considering her past it would be very understandable to be distrustful towards nuns, but like at what point was she supposed to have been getting to know them better?
    But then they didn't really bother to give her character any ACTUAL depth or have her show any real growth, we're just supposed to believe she's grown as a person because she got called out for things she couldn't really control and showed regret about them, while not actually addressing any sort of real flaws she has and showing growth there. I think part of it may be that they tried to go in so many directions with her in such a short time, that none of the arcs were able to get any actual depth and it ended up feeling like way too much was happening but at the same time nothing was happening at all.
    Like to me I didn't really feel like she acted particularly entitled (I didn't think she ever really was in any situations where she got the chance to show any entitlement), she just felt like a really boring and flat character to me, like she's supposed to be flawed but they didn't bother to actually WRITE her flaws so she just ends up a way worse character than an actually flawed character because it's just boring

    Spaniard here:
    The Reconquista is not a very historical precise term. It's used by our far-right here, not for historians; at the very least it's more a process of unification under a faith; but it didn't ended with the Catholic Kings, 200 years after them it happen another episode of persecution against islamic people (they were called "Moriscos" then). And it didn't mean one political unity on the Peninsula either (Portugal and Navarra weren't Castilian or Aragonese rule, nor Castilla or Aragon were one and the same political entity).
    The Inquisition was specially against jews, some of the actual anti semitic propaganda have origins there. But it was against heretics, reformist and not catholics on general too.
    But 1492 was a busy year here: sending off the Jews, the take-over against Granada realm (that's the "Reconquista" climax), the Columbus expedition and the Rom entry on Spain.

    • @MasoTrumoi
      @MasoTrumoi 5 месяцев назад

      @@alicedeligny9240The premise was they were lost to Christendom, because at the time there was some level of Christian unity due to the Roman Catholic Church. There was a premise of "even if we hate each other politically, we can at least agree on Jesus/The Pope."
      In the feudal past, the idea of the government as an infrastructure for common welfare was not a thing. "Government" was a set of hierarchies where individuals claimed rights over those below them. The lord had rights to part of your income and holdings, aka taxes, or had rights to your body in times of war. These "rights" were in constant contention and conversation, which is why there were many peasant revolts. You needed to pacify people to control them.
      Much of this was negotiated via religion. "God made me born noble so I deserve to rule you." There wasn't this secular concept of earning your office, it was a god given right in a caste system. Priests reinforced or challenged this caste system depending on their personal history and leanings, but the Church as a whole was its great ally.
      When you factor in dealing with people from other religions the system gets very messy very fast. Muslim rulers, for instance, would tax Christian and Jewish people under their rule harder than they'd tax Muslims. That may not sound that bad, but consider that a small amount of money/wealth could determine whether or not you get to eat, and that the fairness of taxation was the most common contention. This is also before live-in prisons, so a lot of failure to pay was punished by intimidation and assault. An injury could spell a slow and horrific death to a commoner.
      So you have Christians living under Muslim rule who don't want to pay extra taxes and are sending letters to Christian Kings for help (a fantastic excuse for the Kings). Then on top of that you have the question of the Muslim and Jewish subjects under the Christian lords.
      Usually oaths and political bindings were made via swearing to God+Jesus. Do you make them swear to Jesus? Why would they care about upholding an oath to a version of the Deity they don't believe in. Yes, in theory, they all follow the same God, but any excuse to wiggle out of a Lord's "rights" over you is one you take, so why not say "well I'm not a Christian so I'm not your subject." And unlike in Islam, Christianity didn't have a lot of clear cut "divine law" on how to deal with non-Christians, so it's tough to justify taxing non- subjects.
      These tensions are what lead to a wider justification of Christian warmongering and later genocides by the Common public, and the continuing playbook of Fascists and Nationalists.
      Their system only works if they can justify their (often patriarchal and racial) rulership over you, and if they feel troubled at justifying it, they want you gone. That's why so many nationalists spiral into ethnostate nonsense (something that never existed harmoniously); because dealing with a diverse populace will always rationally lead to a reevaluation of the State and its role, and they don't want you to think about that because they believe they have the right to control you regardless of how rightful that position actually is.

    What makes it feel more strange is that Simon Barry has done much better - his CONTINUUM, which I've seen the first season of, is paced impeccably, especially the pilot and other episodes setting the story up and that was also ten episodes long!

    The first 15 minutes are really good! But then, very little of the story connects with this initial set up. Every scene without the warrior nun crew made me want to gouge my eyes out. Ava and the Squatters? Boring. Ava exploring the city? Slightly less boring. Reluctant Hero trope? Still pretty boring. If the plot was just the warrior nuns and the priest, and everything excluded Ava, it would be a superior show.

She should be the least competing person in the room...And Ava seeing she is the least competing person in the room...thus feeling inadequate to wield the power that is bestowed upon her...Ava reaction to actively avoid joining this group of warrior nuns is warranted and I say worthy of being explored by the show... The whole magical cure to disability was absolutely so distasteful in my opinion and I was just baffled that it happened. The second thing, her being bratty because this is her second chance in life part was so ... frustrating for my patient to watch, she kept asking "would I be that horrible if I was able to walk" and "why is she so stupid" Ava's portrayal is really just so offensive on so many levels its absolutely beyond me that this show has so many supporters.

After a normal bad guy gets his fingers cut off and half his face smashed off he still manages to kill with a cracking sound an uninjured nun who smashed off his face. Cause you know, you often get the better off perfectly healthy people when fatally injured.
    The Protector turned on after, watch half the first season in a row. Fucking great show, strong characters, likable and beautiful local scenery. Also, the hero isnt perfect, just a flawed weak person who needs the support and teaching of others to become better. You know, like in reality. Check it

She's supposed to be 19 but is thirsting like a 14 year old and ok I get it she was in the convent but you cannot do that and also have her fangirling over a Biotech mogul and instantly knowing how to work a mind controlled wheelchair. That scene took me out of the story entirely.
    I had to pause the show and think about where on earth an isolated child trapped in a convent with only a little kid as companion would get specialized magazines and know about quantum gadgets.
    And also she's definitely white. She's really tanned at best. It took me a second because lord knows it can be hard to tell sometimes but white Latinos is a thing because we're not a race so...

    THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!! seriously this video perfectly summed up all the issues i had with this show. I saw it was number 1 on netflix for a while and finally figured aight what the heck i bet it's gotta be pretty good, but oh boy was I wrong. I don't have a problem with writers making a stereotypical plot such as "the chosen one" trope. The problem I have is when they act like this is innovative and exciting, and needs to be way drawn out. It's totally possible to make a unique, fun show with an overused trope (as long as it's not harmful) but it's so frustrating when all you want is to see the story and instead you're just dragged along while a 19 year old monologues about making out with some random hot dude the way a 13 year old would fantasize on tumblr.

    • @lani4552
      @lani4552 4 года назад +4

      To me the statement is true and doesn't change her point at all nor does it diminish the racial diversity of Latin America. She said she was Latinx "BUT white-passing' meaning she is an ethnic minority but because she resembles a white woman she benefits from those privileges. I didn't see it as her saying that Latin is a race itself or that being white-passing/mixed white makes you an outlier. Her statement was that you have a very diverse cast and it's extremely obvious the creators were still too afraid to deviate from having a white/white-passing protagonist and are more comfortable with having black/brown/asian ppl playing solely supportive characters. But maybe I'm mishearing your argument. How does addressing the actress being white-passing perpetuate that Latin America isn't diverse (which is actually well known. There are Afro-Latinx, mixed ppl etc, forced miscegenation was even a thing during colonialism) I interpreted more like she wanted to acknowledge that the lead wasn't, in fact, white and a cultural minority but so happens to still resemble a white woman which is important to acknowledge in this 'diverse' cast

    In the same way that Spiderman movies always need to do the Uncle Ben arc, I see a lot of movies and shows packing in a ton of extra unnecessary detail because either the original story was too brief (Umbrella Academy) or the actual character arc is too anti-hero (Altered Carbon). So the show has to build it's own dramatic context, and you basically get a prequel.

    would you be willing to give the show's 2nd season a chance? it may have already been cancelled but it was still imo a big upgrade from s1. i agree the 1st season's pacing was way too slow and it did drag on, but s2 fixed that and removed almost all of ava's monologues. theres also divided screentimes now, so lilith's backstory is explored (although yes she does turn into a villain, its implied to be part of her journey considering the actress seemed to imply that she'll always be part of the ocs still and would have been if only there was a season 3) and the focus isnt always on ava but also on the diverse cast of characters. its sad that shotgun mary is gone (due to some personal issues from the actress at home if im not mistaken) though. ava grows more mature and imo better as a person here i think, and has really decided to fill in her "chosen one" role properly. the main couple is also sapphic, one that is written and paced quite well imo. and although its not perfect still, and there are still some pacing issues esp since it got cut down to 2 episodes less, i think its still worth a shot at least? i mean it did get 100% on rotten tomatoes so thats something

Imagine doing a Wonder Woman tv show adaptation but then Diana dies in the first 5 minutes of the 1st episode and an OC gets her powers and becomes the lead. It makes no sense! Ugh. Sigh.

    I'm not gonna lie, I loved this show... all except for the "hero". Like, the back at the ranch badass nunning stuff was so great to me, but every time we cut back to Ava I audibly groaned. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING would have been better with a better written lead.

    I find it so interesting that you like Cursed more than Warrior Nun, because I couldn't even get past the first episode of Cursed. The characters had all felt super generic and the world had no depth and that scene where she fights wolves happened and I was so bored - which is not great when I am supposed to care about main character's people being slaughtered.
    Warrior Nun pulled me in though when Mary cradled the previous Warrior Nun (I don't remember her name) as she willing sacrificed herself for the protection of the Halo. I didn't really like Ava until the plot actually started moving, but damn did I love every moment with the Nuns - I loved Beatrice's cool confidence (and she is totally my favorite character) and Lilith's intense drive and Mary's grief driving her forward even as she tried her best to be kind.

      Same! I can't exactly expect Melina to like this show though. A few minutes in she had to say Ava being healed by the Halo is problematic.

    I love watching videos of you ripping apart mediocre TV shows that I have never heard of and will never watch, lmao. It's so immensely satisfying. 10/10!

    HA this was all very well said and so much fun to watch. I genuinely enjoyed the second half of the first season of WN a lot, especially episode 6 which I honestly adored. Frankly, just the decision to get rid of the voiceover after the first few eps improved the quality ~dramatically~... but it's good to take a step back every once and a while and remember how much of the show is kind of a trashfire
