    If you imagine the world as a glass of water, and all of its molecules as people in the world, you can get a good picture of the problem we face with globalization. When you put a drop of colored fluid into the glass (an idea, a nation, etc) you see that the color swirls around and, with time, eventually dissolves into the entire glass. At first, the color is strong, vibrant, and rich (rich culture, rich history, etc) but then fades away, being absorbed into the system (globalization). At other times, molecules in this glass may act more like oil than water, resisting absorption in the system by clinging to older times and ways. So if you imagine this, what you see now is a glass full of colors and fluids, suspended in odd shaped bubbles and looking like liquid stained glass, splitting and joining, mixing and molding, to fit into the world. Over a long time however, the absorption is inevitable, and it will happen, hopefully very peacefully... but this is the true problem: Drop a firecracker in your glass. Liquid splashes everywhere (death), colors mix rapidly creating a blend of odd new colors and fluids, and every color is marred with a bit of soot making the entire glass darker. War changes the world quickly, and that is what the true powerful globalists want, WAR.

    Even though, as many people keep pointing out here in the comments, the data is likely to be flawed in more ways than one and the list/rankings might be flawed as a result, that really is not the point. It's about trying to be good globally rather than "own country first" and people here fighting about which country is good or bad or why these rankings "suck" is showing that people still don't get it. It's not about you and your country, think globally goddamnit, that's the message. Judge your country by what it's doing for humanity, don't judge other countries because you think your country is surely doing it much better and should be higher up the list, that's exactly the attitude Simon tries to change.

      Taint ABird well, call me biased, but India. I've heard that we're seen as a country filled with rapists and filth, with faeces laden streets all over. Honestly, while rape does occur, like in any other country, it's not as bad as portrayed. In fact, women, my sister included, do roam around alone late in the night without need for much worry for their safety. Rapes are a problem, yes, and shouldn't take place, but we don't have a "rape problem" any more than the next country. As for filth ridden, yes, we do have poor people who have no means to afford a place and hence build slums and defaecate out in the open, but it's unfortunately the hard life they were given. The amount of good done is very dependant upon the capacity to do good. If person A has ¤3 and gives them all away to person B who has ¤0 person A is considered a saint who now needs charity from person C or person A will starve to death. This is the essence of wealth redistribution. Instead, if a person C has ¤5 trillion and they give ¤100 to the person B they have benefited person B 33x more than person A could have while person C notices no decline in comfort or survivability.
      Sainthood is touching but ultimately without wealth creation, all the saints would starve to death. The nation that has the best system for creating wealth should be at the top of the list. The nations with the best system for creating wealth should ignore the list altogether and embrace the sovereignty of their own nation.

However he generalizes really much and doesn't actually know how the world works. It's not about how everyone just cares about their own country or how everyone's a narcissist.
      Every country has its own agenda and some actually strive towards working together. However, this doesn't work. Some countries actually need to look inward and fix their own problems before they do anything else. There is a lot that needs to be fixed in the world. Not just global problems.
      It's hard doing the right thing and even harder to even know what the right thing is to do.

      I am an Indian. And am one of the biggest critics of India ( though I am insignificant.. Lol).
      What amazes me about this country is that it stood up. So many languages, so many people each foreginers to other, but it stood up as an entity. With all the caste system and divison it managed to keep together. Inspite of poverty and huge corruption, and the constant inteferrence by outside agencies we managed to create better institutions.
      And the reason for all this is it never forgot its past. Never. 1000 years of foreign rule quartered India at many places, but whatever that remains of the original Indo-Iranian culture has withstood the test of time. The credit of creating a self cleaning culture invariably goes to the founding fathers of this culture. Who created an opem religion, which meant essentially all the people in Bharatvarsha were included. Hinduism was made as open religon, one where God's importance is less, but your preception of the world is more important.
      If it was not for the sung and unsung ancient Indians, we would be 10 to 15 countries, fighting like Europe of 1940s.
      And how fragile the balance was can be seem in present day Pakistan. It was carved put from the same people, form the same cultural backgorund, from the same society. And today 4 of the 5 or 6 major demographies pf Pakistan are revolting against it.
      I think only thing India contributed to the world was - how a globalised world can function and remain together inspite of extreme challenges both external and internal. Afterall CIA's activities here has beem well written about. Just look at arvind kejriwal. When Indian govt. Took a hard line stance at WTO and later at climate meet, Arvind Kejriwal was getting stonger day and night, he was a social media hero, 3 or 4 new names start appearing, the intolerance protests. When Indian signed a lot treaties with America and showed friendly overtures.... And Narendra Modi personal endeavour to have good relationship with Obama started matterialising, suddenly out of nowhere, tapes leak out, scandals in AAP starts coming out every day, AAP gets effectively eliminated as a 'positive political force'. It is now just a petty party. Its hard not to connect the dots. There is always an external hand here. And with so many in divisons, their work is far easier. But India manages to do it.

However for global issues, competition is not going to help resolve global warming, or world poverty. No one is going to compete to eradicate poverty more, because there's no self interest in it from the competitive mind set. That is where cooperation is more useful, because it has a mind set prepared to deal with global challenges.

    I noticed that the Nordic countries all rank very high. I wonder why. I can think of a few differences between them and most other countries: low levels of corruption, the type of welfare state in them and a secular culture. Just to be clear, I'm not saying that one or more of these things make countries selfless. I'm just thinking of possible explanations.
    In one way, the rankings encourage the kind of thinking they're supposed to oppose. When you compare countries, people are inevitably going to compare their own country to others. On the whole, the rankings do probably make people think of countries in more global terms.

      Tolga Simsek If you look to all under-developed countries, you'll see that the main problem is not that they're right now underdeveloped, but that they're right now being prevented from developing themselves, because the interests of the developed nations will get hurt if the number of other developed nations increases and the number of nations they exploit decreases.
      Sure the people in the undeveloped world can't blame others from pursuing their interests and have to change themselves in order to apply change to their countries, but that doesn't deny the responsibility of the developed (particularly Western) world.

      Yasser Dammak Don't underestimate the role corruption plays in developed countries' hesitancy to get involved with undeveloped countries. If you look at Sudan, after the big genocide took place and it was split between Sudan and South Sudan, it didn't take more than a year before a genocidal civil war broke out between the new pockets of refugees living in South Sudan. That's the kind of stupid that money can't fix.

    Seeing Belgium and United Kingdom in this list, I could conclude that he is just ignoring the last 150 year of history, colonization and so on... Leopold II alone killed more than 10 million congolese people... United Kingdom just in India, forcing them to starv, got also pretty high numbers on killing people, to no metion their colonies in Africa.... And then you ask: Whats colonization has to do with nowdays? well, you should be asking how did these small countries accumulate so much wealth....

    • @Nightshaderling
      @Nightshaderling 4 года назад +3

      You have to take all of history into consideration then. I am not disagreeing with you but i recently had a similar discussion with a friend and if you look at history, many countries did horrific things. With great power comes great responsibility and i think counties tend to get power way before they become mature and knowledgable about how to use it.
      I can think of very few powerful empires and countries that did not commit horrific atrocities, and this is not limited to one continent.

    • @brunofritz650
      @brunofritz650 4 года назад +3

      @@Nightshaderling The problem begins when we take "countries" as single entities, when they are actually the result of the forces of the powerful dominant class that rules them. In this sense, you would not be able to treat the Russia of Nicholas II to the Stalinist Russia as the same entity, since diferent powers/groups were holding the control of the country. In the case of United Kingdom and Berlgium, the dominant class is pretty much the same, not the same people, people but many of the children and grandchildren of those holding power at the time, are still very influential (particularly the bankers) - Well, in the United Kingdom you still have a royal family that has being keeping the throne within blood lineage, although its not fair to say that they are actually holding power, but they are certainly big allies of those rulling . The short story is that there is no such a thing as a "nice country", and this measure of countries that make the most good to others sounds like some light weight propaganda... but if you really want to talk about country policies that are driven towards a strong sense of solidarity, you should probably put Cuba in this list, as the country, even being such a small and poor one, it is giving humanitarian aid all over the globe (particularly by sending doctors) way over their monetary capacity (there is a monetary equivalent for the formation of this doctors, which is not cheap, especially for a country like Cuba, but the help they provide all over the globe is priceless...).
      That`s being said, we can talk about history of empires. Its importante to notice though, that the more recent the empires we are talking about, the greater the damage the were able to do to their dominated, and they did.. no single empire in history of mankind harmmed more people than United States. Before them, england and European biggest colonizers get on top... Even if you go way back in times of Roman empire, you would find empires more merciful and with greater humanistic sense than these modern empires... Adrianus and Marcus Aurelius, for their ideas, for instance, seemed to be better people than Churchill...

      Not the countries that are rich. The wealth is owned privately. Spain didn't become rich by looting South America - it went bust. The wealth is privatised. UK ain't rich. I live in an area of the North that is poorer than Eastern Germany was in the 80's. The system favours the already powerful and rich. It's now a battle between the corporations and democracy. That will end with the destruction of the our climate and humans.
