You had me at Star Trek. I have met and gotten pics with Bill, Nichelle, George and a lot of the newer folks so I LOVE the recommendation! :)
A correction on the binoculars, the second numbet is the size of the front lens in mm, not field of view. 42 is 42mm, 50 is 50mm, 70 is 70mm. Field of view is likely written on it, but it's in degrees. Normally an 8x42 binocular has a fov of .around 7°. Or sometimes you will see it expressesd as 350 feet at 1000 yards. So from a 1000 yards, you can see an area of 350'
