  • We discuss the second son of Prithviraj Kapoor - Shammi, a giant superstar who brought flamboyance, giddy delight and uninhibited, joyous dancing to Hindi cinema.
His career can be divided into two phases - his "hero" phase and his supporting actor phase where he played dad/cop/uncle or extremely skilled plastic surgeon.
We discuss Mem Sahib (1956), Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), Brahmachari (1968), and Bundal Baaz (1976).
What are your favorite Shammi Kapoor films?
Do watch the puppy birthday song from Mem Sahib: • Mem Sahib - Chuni Muni... . And then the Shammi-Shashi qawwali, which is from Jab Se Tumhe Dekha Hai, a film where they both have cameos (and is Geeta Bali's last 😭). • MOHD.RAFI FIRST ITEM S...

@@bethwatkins6163 It was a delightful little movie. Shammi was by far the best thing about it and the flying sequences had me rolling with laughter. Special effects on par with superman IV.
Shammi and Shashi are my favourite kapoors depending on what mood I'm in. For Shammi, it's the childlike sparkle in him that draws me in the most: the crazy dance he does in the song suku suku from junglee never fails to bring a smile on my face. Have either of you seen him in Bluff Master? It's one of the few roles I think where he's not a rich dude - also Pran is top notch and the songs are great.
Looking forward to the Shashi episode next. Beth, have you seen Pyar kiye jaa (with kishore kumar) and Deewangee (with Zeenat)? Would love to hear your thoughts on these as they're so rarely acknowledged.

@@zairaMc23 I have seen Pyar Kiye Jaa and mention it briefly in the Shashi ep :D I love all the songs. I have not seen Deewangee but was trying to describe it when we talk about his heroines but couldn't remember its name :D

Shammi Kapoor was our answer to Elvis with the whole rockstar persona and fan following. Also, great costumes.

I loved this episode. I can’t wait for you all to do Nasir Hussain series.
Fun fact : According to Aamir Khan during Nasir Hussain’s auto biography book launch, Tum Sa Nahi Dekha was Nasir’s first movie as a director, both Nasir Hussain and Shammi were relatively unknown. Shammi and Nasir went to see the audience reaction to the opening show, Shammi instantly became a star. Ppl wouldn’t let him leave the theater, Nasir Hussain didn’t have a ride back home bc he came with Shammi so he took the Tanga back home.

Thank you so much! Yes we would love to do an EP on Nasir Hussain's films! What a fun anecdote, thanks for sharing. I can totally see how Shammi became an overnight sensation - he was so fabulous. - Pitu

I am loving this series and learning so much! Thank you! Shammi is definitely an interesting character and I know little about him. I was trying to find what I could about him on academic websites like JSTOR to see if his impact of overt sexuality being portrayed on screen has been assessed, but I've found nothing. There does seem to be some impact though. I was going through the songs from the movie Paras with Rakhee and Sanjeev Kumar and the song Tere Hothon Ke Do Phool looks so Shammi inspired. I just don't see the Big Three nor Bharat Bhushan doing something like that. But I easily see Shammi!!
I did watch Laapataa Ladies and I loved it. 5/5! The film has so much heart and care with its characters! The actors were all so fitting for their roles and I loved it! So short and sweet. I cried tears of joy at the end because all was well for Jaya and Phool.

Going to JSTOR means you and I think alike! I haven't dug around for academic writing on Shammi yet but I should!

Teesri Manzil is my favourite Shammi Kapoor movie too! I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. I'd also love if you can discuss RD Burman and his music when you talk about Teesri Manzil because that was his breakthrough album.

I feel like I have to do homework by watching the films you discuss before getting to your podcast😄 I love Shammi and I'm glad I watched Mem Sahib and Tumsa Nahin Dekha. I did not imagine him as a villain and he did pretty good I thought. Also liked seeing Meena Kumari as a modern woman with shades of grey and that puppy song was a delightful surprise! Could totally see his persona being formed in Tumsa Nahin Dekha. Ameeta was very good in this and it's a shame she did not have much of a career.
Totally agree with you about emotional Shammi. I remember I used to like him as this fun, crazy performer and then I saw 'Ehsaan Tera Hoga' where he displayed so much pathos that I saw him in a different, attractive light! Same with 'Tumne Mujhe Dekha Hokar Meherbaan', although from what I read his emotions were real there because his wife had just passed away. Now I've to go listen to some Rafi-Shammi songs😍

Yesssss not enough people know about or talk about emotional Shammi. He is so, so lovely in those scenes and in his songs. What a lovely actor. And listening to Rafi songs is ALWAYS a great idea. - Pitu
