I had tears of joy by the end of this. This is one of those nights work everyone will wish that they had been there. Many will pretend they were! Many thanks to the cameraman.
I was unconfortable at first because I couldn't see the harmony in their dance, but from the middle to the end I started enjoying their dancing and the connection to the background music. The performance was very well rehearsed and they looked great doing it. The protest element was also very clear and fair. I loved their furious expressions at the end. Fantastic!
Never have I seen a massive group of women empowered in such a light that usually packages, labels, &commercializes a woman's body.I love what the designer has created for the women in HIS world. The clothes look structured,&restricting yet allows so much freedom. What perfect balance that gives me a clear redefinition of a woman's body; what it can wear &what it can DO.The dancers that modeled his story had a strong sense of agenda and individuality while having a CLEAR understanding of unity.
ok, I feel like I've read most of the comments here. Some of ya'll have made good points about the semi-exploitative nature of this show. I think it's groundbreaking for the time, and place. I think it's pretty revolutionary to put a bunch of black ladies on stage and have them perform a dance deeply rooted in African American culture. I think exposing the fashion world (a world that is the very inception of homogenous beauty standards) to something so different, and yet very much real, was and still is very important. I just wonder who this benefitted? I feel as though fashion can at times be extremely exploitative. Who has access to high fashion? Who benefits from the sales? Did theSteppers benefit? In using a black medium, did Owens ensure that black folks benefitted, or did he just use our medium as a way of elevating the minds of his audience members, and the overwhelmingly white and wealthy fashion world? It's important to ask these questions.
exploitative -making use of a situation or treating others unfairly in order to gain an advantage or benefit. I dont see how anyone was treated unfairly. They got a chance to perform and they took it. The models/dancers can now put the show on their resume. if the the dancers didnt know what they were dancing for and were mislead about their pay so much so to later find out they got paid pennies meanwhile the owner made millions then perhaps.. But I am sure people knew what the pay was agreed to it and saw an opportunity to be a part of something that looks good on their resume... So not exploitative in a true meaning of the word.
Unexpected and empowering! Bravo Rick Owens! In an industry full of stereotypes daring is rare. These women are real warriors, Rick changed the boundaries, I hope more twists on the industry will follow, this was a dance theatre, aboriginal performance and not just catwalk
Like any fashion show the show is majorly about one thing and one thing only. The clothing. In order to showcase the themes behind the line Rick Owens made a number of aesthetic choices in order to highlight ideas that he explored in the making of the pieces. I've read interviews about this particular line where he has mentioned that street wear to him has a very revolutionary-warrior, "gladiator" and "Spartan" type feel to it. The shoes which are also of his design are meant to be an abstraction of gladiator warrior shoes. The models/dancers are grimacing because that is the tone of the clothing. Bold colors, bold lines, bold cuts, bold shaping. So therefore you have bold bodies performing bold movements while making strong faces. I also noticed that the floor patterns consisting of sharp turns and straight lines as well as 90 degree and 45 degree facings of the choreography also tie into the in-your-face "feel" behind the line. This undoubtedly also served to showcase every side of the clothing in action as street wear and sports wear is meant to be seen. This line, as Rick Owens has mentioned, is directly influenced by both street and sports wear. I feel that conciously choosing "earthy" full curved women performing step-dancing while intentionally grimacing really does the artistry behind the purpose of this show (the clothing) a great deal of justice. Rick was extremely creative and innovative in the choices that he made.
Thank you for explaining and helping in defining what it was I saw, especially because I know nothing about the world of fashion. The aggression was quite real and I can understand why so many people in the front rows kept staring at their stupid phones.
Powerful and aggressive, yet full of unity camaraderie and sisterhood Personally I didn't see black or white while while i was watching this, I was moved by the music, the women, the movement, the color the raw passion
I agree with your general sentiment, but why say that? It always annoys me when people say something like, "I don't see color." It doesn't make a person racist to recognize a black chick when they see one. Or any race at all, for that matter. People look different; it's okay to notice.
Congratulations!!!!!!!! Rick Owens.Thank to show the real and beautiful woman!!! amazing!!!!performance . Off course congratulations to all beautiful woman!! hermosas todas!!!
I love the REAL THICK POWERFUL HEALTHY BODIES and the BLACK AND BROWN AND WHITE SISTERHOOD here in this show ... tears.. its so powerfilled... you have given us such a gift. Thank You Rick Owens! Everyone... now BRING IT!!!
Great stuff, very proud of my neighbor Loretta who is one of the dancers. I had no idea what I would see when she said go check it on the Internet. Dancers, bet you all scared some of those stiff, upper lipped fashion editors half to death, though they were pretending to be cool on the outside, LOL. It is as radical and off the charts for our times as Beethoven was during his time.
I am seriously crying right now. Rick Owens and those fierce-ass steppers just dropped the mic on fashion forever and ever. Fully body fuck you. Amazing.
Sorry for my bad english.... In Brazil, this is called sambar at the face of enemies. The majority of dancers are black womens and out of aesthetic standards. This is so amazing, they literally dancing at the face of the withe elite, producer of the world fashion. This is a well done critic about the excludent fashion that have been making for all fashionistas. This is historic moment, now we have to cross our fingers, for this not appear just a only breath of sanity inside the fashion.
Step is derived from traditional African dances that has stood the test of time. I'm in no way offended by this dance, just as I'm not offended by the Hula or Irish line dances.
I tell you what.. i would've been a million miles more impressed if it was 30 black models graciously walking the catwalk as if it was any other 'high fashion' show to represent a true change and acceptance. Owens just did this for the purpose of a one-off concept. Not exactly a ''revolution'' until people actually imbed diversity into fashion without a second thought
LOVE IT!!!!!! SO POWERFUL, THAT'S WHAT WE WOMEN SHOULD FEEL ABOUT OURSELVES!! AND NOT THE "FRAGILE" IMAGE THAT HAS BEEN SHOVE IT DOWN OUR THROATS FOR YEARS!!
strong!! fierce!! real!! WOMEN! if i could afford those clothes, i would get a whole wardrobe. they can stand up to ferocious steppin and they look beautiful!
I do like the creativity. As a women who is a member of one of the sorority's represented and full figured, I just want to know what made him want them to use those faces(which some call a grit)...the whole thing was completely out the box and shows his originality. Not in love with the clothes but the idea was great...Thanks Owen for the change:)
I just LOVE THIS! It gives me a powerful feeling, excepcially in how "normal" woman feel about the fashion standards... People should pay attention to this show, it's an awesome critic.
in the fashion industry (they are usually girls super skinny and white), this was a great kick to the industry. He's real. doing what he does. does not follow the typical industry standards!.
This was really neat and new to fashion shows but the only thing that urked me was the background music. Step dance is supposed to be about music with your body , acoustics. So it kind of defeats the purpose of a step show and you can barely hear the step routine.
Great example of forward thinking. Finally something real that expresses there should be no conventional mold of beauty and fashion. Very avant-garde. I admire his strength and conviction because the decisions to stand your ground in a sea of prejudice and sameness standards is difficult in the superficial industry.
I was already in love with Rick Owens anyway, but this has just completed it. I REALLY hope other designers take this as a challenge. More larger, POC dancing models, fashion-makers! chop chop!
I love this collection. And I think it's awesome that he used women that weren't the usual model type. But, in all fairness, I think some of the pieces could've been more flattering to some girls' body types. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with not being model sized. It's just that some pieces could've been made to fit some of them a lot better
Increible, me encantó!
This is such a powerful presentation! ... and SO flipping timely! If you told me this was a performance piece in response to any form of racial, religious or other marginalization; to rape culture, to Oil Fracking, to surveilance, to men ruling women, to the wage inequality, to a number of things - I would believe each one! I love this so much!
i've loved Rick Owens for a long time, but always despaired of getting his clothes since they are generally in size 00. as a woman who looks like these chicas up on the runway, i am inspired that a designer whose work i love has expanded his horizons. but will the clothes for purchase be available in these sizes, or were these "non-sample" sizes just for the runway?
Even though I agree that the clothes are not that great it was an awesome show. What does it matter if you think it's ugly? The true intention here is that everyone is going to REMEMBER Rick Owens for his innovation. It's all about there message.
For any ignorant people out there who do not like the faces that the models are making, these women are all real dancers from body stepping groups in America. The faces they are making are traditional in body stepping, to intimidate their enemy team. The collection is called 'Vicious,' it is supposed to be aggressive. Plus, what they are doing looks like f*cking hard work, I would be making a face too if I was doing that!
I have worked with LeeAnet Noble since she was a tap dancer at Knock on Wood. Then came Stomp, Drumstruck and the Rick Owens at Rick Owens Spring 2014 Womenswear Paris, See Ori Rosenthal at Vogue. Lately, as things inevitably evolve, I have played accordion behind her along with a violinist. www.whoaint.com in a Klezmer type rendition of Fiddler on the Roof theme "If I Were a Rich Man". Also our usual "Poinciana" inspired by Ahmad Jamal. Likely the first time (and maybe last!) that anybody has danced to an accordion at Studio 54 (Below)!
I had tears of joy by the end of this. This is one of those nights work everyone will wish that they had been there. Many will pretend they were! Many thanks to the cameraman.

I love it! The emotions, the dancing, the models and the clothes! Especially those banging shoes. I love it all.

@@xpez9694 that’s a good point.
Words can't describe how amazing this is. The raw emotion, passion and style of the clothes and the models. Truly inspiring.
I started bobbing my head subconsciously with these ladies. Such a good show and hella inspiring.
What a great way to demonstrate the livability of the clothes! The centipedes at the end are the best.
Holy f*ck this was the most amazing and creative presentation I have ever seen.
I love this video, I've watched it so many times.
Unexpected and empowering! Bravo Rick Owens! In an industry full of stereotypes daring is rare. These women are real warriors, Rick changed the boundaries, I hope more twists on the industry will follow, this was a dance theatre, aboriginal performance and not just catwalk
That umbrella style cut of the woman in the back of the first group is so amazing!
amazing so yet beautiful!!! im in tears and POWERFUL!! Kudos to Rick Owens
Fierce beautiful natural women on the runways of Paris illustrating fantastic design. MORE. Thank you Rick Owens
I wanna cry, this so beautiful and emotive. Their expressions are priceless.

black is indeed beautiful.
uplifting, inspiring, fierce.
utterly brilliant!!
The clothes are nice. Reminds me of how what some people used to think of 10 years ago as "Costume" garments for Sci-fi. Love It!

Tastiest fashion show I've ever seen.
best fashion video, best dance video and best video starring women!!!!!

this was amazing! the stank faces, the stepping, the clothes. I'm overwhelmed with major fashion feels right now. I can't.
This is why I will always buy Rick Owens clothes, shoes, and accessories whenever I can. Respect.
LOVE IT!!!!!! SO POWERFUL, THAT'S WHAT WE WOMEN SHOULD FEEL ABOUT OURSELVES!! AND NOT THE "FRAGILE" IMAGE THAT HAS BEEN SHOVE IT DOWN OUR THROATS FOR YEARS!!

The Camera guy was horrendous. Is there video of this performance that does it some justice?
I just LOVE THIS! It gives me a powerful feeling, excepcially in how "normal" woman feel about the fashion standards... People should pay attention to this show, it's an awesome critic.

Finally. This is really powerful. Rick Owens has alllllll my respect and admiration.
it's like Rick made us look at the amazing clothes while a riot, a fucking war was going at the same time. Unbelievable!
Beautiful show !
I've never felt so energized after having had such a long and exhausting day.
SO empowering. almost teared. DEFINITELY cheered.
Thank you Rick Owens, for restoring my faith in the fashion industry.
yes I think two out of four teams participated are from sororities. look up the show, there is an article about the background from the cut

No skinny girls, no white girls... just attitude. Rick is simply the best in this business, inspiring, amazing and best of all. REAL.
I was already in love with Rick Owens anyway, but this has just completed it. I REALLY hope other designers take this as a challenge. More larger, POC dancing models, fashion-makers! chop chop!
These ladies rocked the house.
