The 2016 Olympics are set to begin in just over a month in Rio de Janeiro. As the city prepares to receive an influx of international visitors, it is building new infrastructure and transportation systems to accommodate the surge. But the city is also undergoing another major project: hiding and removing poor people from view of foreign onlookers. I went to Rio to see how the city is transforming to make way for the Olympics

Can't really blame them most of the time. Those slum people aren't just poor, most are lazy bums, Rio been building buildings for them to live so they could get rid of the favelas, most of the time it works, they already got rid from a lot of them, but some people just ruin everything. Since they have to pay for water, energy and this kind of stuff, they turned the building into another slum, they started splitting the rooms with wood and selling them and would build more favelas around it.

I'm from the state of Rio de Janeiro - whose capital is the city of Rio - and our governor has recently asked the people to stop saying bad things about the state and the city on the internet. Instead he is advising us to post pictures of the beautiful parts of the city and say positive things to attract tourism. This is how bad our political class, our social justice, our public health and education are. So bad the government has to ask the people to stop spreading the news worldwide.

I went to Rio the September before the games and remember seeing all the construction. I was in a taxi and made small talk with the driver as we passed by volleyball stadiums that were being worked on. I said you must be so excited for the games and he explained how it’s a very bad thing for Rio. I didn’t realize until that conversation and everything he said ended up being accurate

None of those are a big problem in Rio, the real problem is corruption. Millions of dollars for building roads, bridges, funding the police force end up in a pockets of corrupt politicians. If Brazil tackles corruption and focused more on public infrastructure the country would be a better place. Also mafias rule the streets of Rio, they will kick you out of your own house if you don't pay them. Public works projects and calling the military to take care of crime could do the country good.

As a Brazilian I'm gonna tell you guys the truth, Rio is one of the most beautiful places in Brazil, however is one of the most dangerous too, Rio's police is the most violent *in the world* , a lot of hospitals were forgiven because of this stupid Olympics, don't even ask me about the world cup. I'm from São paulo, I love Brazil in all aspects, but the corrupt government of this country is letting Brazil into a hole. Sometime ago the brazilian people got FURIOUS, then the truckers from all the country stopped working, the country went into a caos, the markets were running out of supplies, animals from farms were dieing without food, all the prices were getting so high, president was trying to do a lot of deals, the gasoline prices increased from R$3,60 to R$4,80 (sometimes even R$5,00 a liter). As I said, I hate this country's government, and if it doesn't get better I'll get the f*ck out of this place.

Because its suppose to be an international game and having the host city change internationally goes a long way to drive home that point. Most of the Olympic games were hosted in the US or Europe and a lot of people in other country are already resentful of that fact. Another solution would be to make it so people won't make such a damn big deal about the games (at least financially) but there is just too much profit to be made by the rich and powerful. There's also no international regulatory entity that can do anything about it either and certainly not one where profit isn't one of the primary motive.

    • @abiikr4773
      @abiikr4773 8 лет назад +8

That's understandable, however it will still be unfair as that location only will benefit from the Olympics. The Olympics is bigger than just an international sporting event, it attracts tourists (while where there's tourists money is generated). So for instance if there's a permanent location in a place such as Paris, only the French benefit from it. That therefore causes conflicts, weakens unity in the world and etc.
With all of that said perhaps a remote area with no governing body directing it is a better idea.

They're not the problem, the rich people that are powerful and corrupted enough to make policies that would be taking away from them the very/little left they got ARE the problem
Being poor doesn't automatically mean being a beggar, beggars should be exiled, true, BUT poor should be helped

I live in Rio, in the south zone (I am white and speak english) and have two problems with this video 1st: The mayor and governor aren't cleaning the city up ONLY because there is international attention, there has been an underlying sentiment among the elites that the south zone, barra and downtown were getting to many settlements and there was starting to be too much crime and poverty in those areas, which leaves me to point number 2: Gentrification against those settlements isn't necessairily a bad thing. There is great real estate next to beaches that could have nice, affluent buildings built, however these ILLEGAL settlers have created HUGE (there are some with 100 thousand+) that are centers of crime, drug trafficing and violence, therefore it doesn't seem that wrong that the poliece remove these people from inhabiting this land that many times were supposed to be natural reserves or simply isn't theirs. not only the police is not getting paid, but the firemen too. Also, hospitals don't have the money they were intended to because of internal corruption and our SUS (something like "Unique System for Health") can't cope with hundreds of people in need of medical attention for free - the government does not have the budget to it. Add to that that the State of Rio is practically broke and there's already a massive overbudget (around 4 billion, but I could be mistaken) for the Olympics, which money we know for sure is in the hands of few. If you buy a piece of land and someone invades it, it shouldn't become their land. And also it's not like these houses on Rio were very safe to begin with. They were made by people who don't know a lot about construction and end up using materials that aren't fit for living, so that's just a tragedy waiting to happen.

If some random dude decided to build a shed in your back yard and live there, would you not call the cops to evict him? That's what this is, people illegally building on land owned by someone else. It's a sad situation that these people have nowhere to live, but you aren't gonna let a random homeless guy build a shed in your backyard, are you?
Land in far out areas near major cities are usually owned by some large corporation for agriculture, timer or mining, if people randomly build sheds there the owners wouldn't care unless they interfere with the owner's operations, but the owner still has the right to evict people who are there illegally, and in case where the land will be rezoned for real estate development, illegal sheds definitely will interfere with the owner's operations, so it's only right to evict them, just like most people will call the cops on the homeless building a shed in their back yard.

And it's not some randomly international megacorp that owns that land, they are bought by moms and pops who bought the land for farming for forestry, then passed on to their kids who incorporated the land to preserve the ownerships. This is private land.

This is honestly ridiculous, this is how I see it, so let's say George is a father of 5 children and he gets word that the president is coming to visit his home for dinner. All the children go to get themselves ready for the President's arrival except for one child which is the youngest of the 5. That one child cries and begs for George to help him get ready but all George can think about is the president arriving. George can either choose to help his one child get ready, or send him off somewhere else where he wouldn't have to hear the child's crying. Any good person would help their child get ready, so why can't Brazil's government invest in helping THEIR people.

I don't really see whats wrong. Rio's infrastructure is based around tourism and if the place does not look pleasing to the eyes of tourists, people wont come. The government is doing what is needed to get more money for the city. Through a political and business point of view they have to make Rio look as good as possible especially with the Olympics. If Hawaii looked like trash everywhere, people will not go there for tourism, they clean up as much as they can to get the most money.

Aaron Zhang Cause it sounds strange saying "Barra" without making the "R" sound like a "H". Rio on the other hand sounds perfectly normal saying it as it sounds, foreigners might have trouble saying Rio with a "H" sound like it is in Portuguese.

Problem is, the city isn't getting better. They are just spending the money to make the city look good for a little bit, and then tear it all down afterwards. Even if they do get profit, they probably just spend it on masking their city up again for the next big event.

Brazil government must stop this portrayal scheme of being a 1st world country and deploying effors to obscure that majority of its citizens are suffering and less benefited. Infrastructures may attract tourists, however, the welfare and well-being of the populace must never be abridge.
They might argue that country's tourism industry could give astronomical budget for the government to finance the needs of the society. BUT GOVERNMENT IS NOT BUSINESS. SERVICE FIRST BEFORE PROFIT. I am totaly speechless!

R’s aren’t pronounced as H in Portuguese. The accent of some Brazilians makes it seem as such. The proper pronunciation of those two r’s In Barra is a very heavy rasping sound that comes from the throat. Such a sound isn’t used in the English language.
