The 2016 Olympics are set to begin in just over a month in Rio de Janeiro. As the city prepares to receive an influx of international visitors, it is building new infrastructure and transportation systems to accommodate the surge. But the city is also undergoing another major project: hiding and removing poor people from view of foreign onlookers. I went to Rio to see how the city is transforming to make way for the Olympics

Can't really blame them most of the time. Those slum people aren't just poor, most are lazy bums, Rio been building buildings for them to live so they could get rid of the favelas, most of the time it works, they already got rid from a lot of them, but some people just ruin everything. Since they have to pay for water, energy and this kind of stuff, they turned the building into another slum, they started splitting the rooms with wood and selling them and would build more favelas around it.
I'm from the state of Rio de Janeiro - whose capital is the city of Rio - and our governor has recently asked the people to stop saying bad things about the state and the city on the internet. Instead he is advising us to post pictures of the beautiful parts of the city and say positive things to attract tourism. This is how bad our political class, our social justice, our public health and education are. So bad the government has to ask the people to stop spreading the news worldwide.
That's just surreal! Sad beyond words.
Dayum ur goverment is that desperate for cash
Soon enough the people will be tired of it like those in Venezuela and Syria they’ll fight back and reclaim stability it’s disgusting how much money can hurt somewhere

Franco B. But doesn’t the government already know that everyone knows about what they’re doing?
I went to Rio the September before the games and remember seeing all the construction. I was in a taxi and made small talk with the driver as we passed by volleyball stadiums that were being worked on. I said you must be so excited for the games and he explained how it’s a very bad thing for Rio. I didn’t realize until that conversation and everything he said ended up being accurate
Yeah that’s true because I am Portuguese

None of those are a big problem in Rio, the real problem is corruption. Millions of dollars for building roads, bridges, funding the police force end up in a pockets of corrupt politicians. If Brazil tackles corruption and focused more on public infrastructure the country would be a better place. Also mafias rule the streets of Rio, they will kick you out of your own house if you don't pay them. Public works projects and calling the military to take care of crime could do the country good.

As a Brazilian I'm gonna tell you guys the truth, Rio is one of the most beautiful places in Brazil, however is one of the most dangerous too, Rio's police is the most violent *in the world* , a lot of hospitals were forgiven because of this stupid Olympics, don't even ask me about the world cup. I'm from São paulo, I love Brazil in all aspects, but the corrupt government of this country is letting Brazil into a hole. Sometime ago the brazilian people got FURIOUS, then the truckers from all the country stopped working, the country went into a caos, the markets were running out of supplies, animals from farms were dieing without food, all the prices were getting so high, president was trying to do a lot of deals, the gasoline prices increased from R$3,60 to R$4,80 (sometimes even R$5,00 a liter). As I said, I hate this country's government, and if it doesn't get better I'll get the f*ck out of this place.
@woficnwoap ohyeayea You're very wrong. São Paulo is extremely important, but Brazil is immense -- in many perspectives. "Labels are the opposite of understanding."

Bandits can get guns much easier than normal people.

brazil has waaaaay too many problems to host something like the olympics
the world in general has way too many problems to be spending this much time and money on games
pymai yeah but brazil specifically has too many
If I could like this comment a thousand times, I would.
+Luísa Souza What about the microcephaly epidemic down there as well? First world countries like the United Kingdom and US and European countries could end up like Brazil too
Especially when the olympics are bringing more problems to the local poor population. It's a shame to see people in power care more about the others than they do about their own.
After the games, this park will be like so many other Olympic Parks, empty and useless.
Why can't we just have one location for the Summer and Winter Olympics, and keep it maintained. Most of the structures they build never get used again. It's just senseless to me.
at least some of the arenas will be transformed in schools
at least some of the arenas will be transformed in schools
at least some of the arenas will be transformed in schools
Because its suppose to be an international game and having the host city change internationally goes a long way to drive home that point. Most of the Olympic games were hosted in the US or Europe and a lot of people in other country are already resentful of that fact. Another solution would be to make it so people won't make such a damn big deal about the games (at least financially) but there is just too much profit to be made by the rich and powerful. There's also no international regulatory entity that can do anything about it either and certainly not one where profit isn't one of the primary motive.
That's understandable, however it will still be unfair as that location only will benefit from the Olympics. The Olympics is bigger than just an international sporting event, it attracts tourists (while where there's tourists money is generated). So for instance if there's a permanent location in a place such as Paris, only the French benefit from it. That therefore causes conflicts, weakens unity in the world and etc.
With all of that said perhaps a remote area with no governing body directing it is a better idea.
So in summary, Vox is *literally* the guy who said:
"I'm gonna end this guy's whole career"
Well, I'm Brazilian and I need to say, this problem isn't restrictred to Rio. We're currently in a political and economic crisis, because our governors are focusing on making more money to them, leaving the population apart. Brazil looks like a beautiful country with nice people living in it, but believe me, it's not only that. Oh, and violence is just growing up, I mean, A LOT.
Haniel Schirmer same as nepal, but at the same time they're improving it
Haniel Schirmer Damn
Yes, I used to live in brazil a couple years ago. My dad was once pointed a gun to his head, just right outside our house. I know it's getting even worse, so I fear for my family.

Why don't poor people just buy more money?
lol
Poor people can't buy anything stupid
@Adam aren't you supposed to be in Summer School?
Because they don't have any money to buy it with, duh
Poor people aren't the problem though there are some "groups" like gypsies (read as = not just poor but also beggars that spend most of what they got on booze and no long-term-value stuff) or whatever
They're not the problem, the rich people that are powerful and corrupted enough to make policies that would be taking away from them the very/little left they got ARE the problem
Being poor doesn't automatically mean being a beggar, beggars should be exiled, true, BUT poor should be helped
True that is hard to distinguish the two but the corrupted f*ckers that buy laws and justice instead of succumb to it don't even try at all
This is heartbreaking, we need to see more of this in the news, not Kim Kardashian's latest surgery. Hopefully the Brazillian government will see what they are doing wrong soon.
They already know.. but they don't care about people
they know exactly what they are doing, they don't care at all
they're not trying to do the right thing for brazil, they just don't care
let me tell you, it got worse, people are buying bones to make soup because thats all we can afford, real meat can go to up 20 to a 100, a full tank of gasoline is 25% of our minimium pay wage...
Events like these leave cities crippled and with facilities they have nothing to do with
Thankfully for my country, the amount of athletes is enough to fill in the facilities (since they turned into a training area, but still usable for the Olympics or anything like that). Plus there's the current pandemic, so they've been using some of the rooms for Quarantine.
@@wizoneoncereveluv9668 The Philippines. One of the sports facilities would've still been in use currently if it weren't for the pandemic, but thankfully the "sports city" was made such that it could hold evacuees or patients if ever needed. Plus unlike most "local" sports facilities, the sports city that was made for the 2019 SEA Games is up to international standards, properly ventillated, air-conditioned, and maintained.
Events like these break a country into 2 or more parts ....i m sure one of them will rise and make a seperate nation

I live in Rio, in the south zone (I am white and speak english) and have two problems with this video 1st: The mayor and governor aren't cleaning the city up ONLY because there is international attention, there has been an underlying sentiment among the elites that the south zone, barra and downtown were getting to many settlements and there was starting to be too much crime and poverty in those areas, which leaves me to point number 2: Gentrification against those settlements isn't necessairily a bad thing. There is great real estate next to beaches that could have nice, affluent buildings built, however these ILLEGAL settlers have created HUGE (there are some with 100 thousand+) that are centers of crime, drug trafficing and violence, therefore it doesn't seem that wrong that the poliece remove these people from inhabiting this land that many times were supposed to be natural reserves or simply isn't theirs. Just a thought from a real person from Rio for you to think about
Vox is always very bias. That's why I unsubscribed.

While I do understand your points but don't you think it would be more beneficial and ethical to spend money on these disenfranchised areas to make them safer, crime-free neighborhoods instead of just uprooting and evicting the poor that have lived there years? This way the poor can have a chance to move upwards in society as their dangerous crime-ridden communities have become safer commercial areas. It would only benefit the economy in the long run.

Rio is a mess, finances are in shambles, the police arnt even getting paid, and many of the facilities for the Olympics are yet to be finished, add on top of this a outbreak of Zika, and its becoming increasingly clear that Rio wasn't ready to host the games.
not only the police is not getting paid, but the firemen too. Also, hospitals don't have the money they were intended to because of internal corruption and our SUS (something like "Unique System for Health") can't cope with hundreds of people in need of medical attention for free - the government does not have the budget to it. Add to that that the State of Rio is practically broke and there's already a massive overbudget (around 4 billion, but I could be mistaken) for the Olympics, which money we know for sure is in the hands of few. I never was a politically active guy, but damn I am truly ashamed for my country right now.
They undoubtedly bought the games. This Olympics will be a catastrophe. How many tourists will be murdered in the two weeks? This will be the end of the I.O.C. and it should be!
Chill down! You make it seems like Rio is like, let's say, France or the US, where you can be caught in middle of some mass shooting or a terrorist attack - Rio is not that bad.
They should just pick a rich country to host the Olympics. Poorer and developing countries should focus on the problem of their country first
Nathalie Golding Or they shouldn't host the olympics and give money to developing countries.
Nathalie Golding At the end, it always cames down to corruption and greed. People are greedy, you can't change that. If someone offered you 50 million you wouldn't care if you had to deport some poor people and destroy their homes. Or maybe you would care, but 95% of people wouldn't hesitate.
They should just host it in Greek, where it all started, rather than hosting it in other countries every year

The thing about favelas and poorer brazilian districts is that they are where a lot of brazilian culture is generated. Many of the footballers, dancers, musicians, artists etc come from these places, the community spirit is huge and that stuff is what makes brazil unique. Hopefully something will turn around in brazilian politics because it looks like the left wingers have had their day, which is bad news for the poor, both in rio and elsewhere.
exactly, this happens in many places around the world like sf and london.
Many Brazilians will disagree, even though it's true. They have extremely unfavorable views of those who come from the favelas, unfortunately.
+Wesley Carvalho is it true Brazilian society is more discriminatory when it comes to social class, rather than race?
Culture typically comes up from the lower classes and is appropriated by the upper ones once it is 'safe' and 'popular'.
While people talk about the wealthy being the creators, they generally are not. It is the poor and middle class that tend to take the risks and produce the majority of both wealth and culture, while the wealthy are more risk adverse and just sorta take advantage of what others make.
Do they do community robberies where they run up on tourist with machetes?

15 years of Socialist Gov in Brazil do this, you still believe that Socialists works for the poor?
Shut up, the Workers Party isn't a socialist party.
yes it is
Our government wasn't really socialist, but borderline socialist.
Everything they did was making the government bigger and our market less free, recklessly increasing our expenses and keeping people in perpetual poverty so they could get votes.
lol brazil has anything but socialism. maybe it is named this way but no were near to what socialism really is
Do you also believe that the peoples republic of china is actually a republic.. Heck do you actually believe it's even communism? Open your eyes, we live in a world of lies, greed, and "capitalism".

I feel ashamed knowing that my country has to do this in order to show only the "good" side of Brazil, treating the poor like this is just wrong.
The Olympics does more harm than good.
Not Sydney 2000 which will still be the best in the Southern Hemisphere
They built those facilities on parkland
Its a social institution that the rich sits down to and the poor to carry on their shoulders. Not only in Brazil, but in Japan, the stadium their building for olympics is exploiting innocent Chinese workers and not paying them
+Samuel Macrae Same for the one hosted in my home city of Atlanta brought even more business tourism and jobs.
They wanted the Olympics in Chicago. I can only imagine it.
They would build a wall to keep the everyone around the downtown and north of downtown area. They'd built stadiums on the lake to keep the athletes from getting shot on the west side and south side. Haha.
Please help. I'm scared umma get shot.

Being of Brazilian descent, I live this country. Every time I visit, I have some of the best times of my life. What's happening in Rio needs to be spotlighted more. I would love to see John Oliver do a piece on Rio or Brasil as a whole! It would definitely help a lot.
Like it has helped for BREXIT ?
It helped shed light and clarity on the matter!

natte Rich What's your take on the matter? I'd like to gain perspective from all angles.
Interesting....Things super biased people often say: Don't believe a word he or she says.
Why would you remove people from their homes. Not cool!
Is it really their home when they took land that belonged to somebody else and settled there? I'm pretty sure that's not how property rights work.
Alexandra Venera actually many states and countries have laws that state of you live there for over a certain amount of time the land becomes yours. So by not claiming the land to begin with, in reality whosever land it was actually gives it up. If you don’t take care of your land, then at least most people take care of their homes
@@Fetch94 Yeah, I know. I live in a country where that's the law, and it still doesn't make it right. Like I said before, that's not how property rights should work. If you buy a piece of land and someone invades it, it shouldn't become their land. And also it's not like these houses on Rio were very safe to begin with. They were made by people who don't know a lot about construction and end up using materials that aren't fit for living, so that's just a tragedy waiting to happen.
@Alexandra Venera hah. Property rights dont mean anything. They just allow people trying to survive to get bullied. You should watch some videos (if this one didnt say) about what housing people can actually afford on their wages, suprise! Its this.
Also if youre not living on your land you obviously dont need it to survibe. End of story. Goodbye.
Eye opening and very concerned for low SES Brazilian citizens. I hate how much power can be weilded with the amount of wealth a person has
It's people that give wealth power. What would you do for a 100 million dollars. Then keep moving 1 million at a time and see if you'd still do it. Buy can buy nearly anything/anyone.
I was once told this joke
A man walks up to a women and says "Would you sleep with me for a million bucks" The women looks him over "Sure, but you pay first" The man replies "How about for 20 dollars?" She retorts "What kind of a person do you think I am" His response is perfect "We've already established what kind of a person you are now we are negotiating a price."
Eye opening!? Where have you been from this planet for the past 40 years? This is the FIRST time you hear about this!? You never heard the word "favela"? You haven't seen the City of God? The Sandpit Generals? Welcome to Earth!

Fine, why cant we just ban people from middle eastern countries momentarily until terrorist acts decrease? Doing that isnt against the constitution, it allows us to disable entry from foreign countries. Idk why people are so againsg protecting ourselves, there is a clear trend of terroristic people. It starts with their origin.
Rio de Janeiro today's drowning in debts. They stopped to pay their professors at federal college's, a time ago they stopped to having classes. The healthcare is more horrible than before, the crime rate is increasing, even the army needed to intervene in Rio favelas again. The government cut their education budget for A HALF. The future of that state is dark.

If some random dude decided to build a shed in your back yard and live there, would you not call the cops to evict him? That's what this is, people illegally building on land owned by someone else. It's a sad situation that these people have nowhere to live, but you aren't gonna let a random homeless guy build a shed in your backyard, are you?
Land in far out areas near major cities are usually owned by some large corporation for agriculture, timer or mining, if people randomly build sheds there the owners wouldn't care unless they interfere with the owner's operations, but the owner still has the right to evict people who are there illegally, and in case where the land will be rezoned for real estate development, illegal sheds definitely will interfere with the owner's operations, so it's only right to evict them, just like most people will call the cops on the homeless building a shed in their back yard.
The problem is when this guy build that shed 60 years ago.
And built it before any company had bought the land.
Abosolutely not, most tracts of land on the American continent are owned since 200! years ago, bought by the first waves of colonists. And it's not some randomly international megacorp that owns that land, they are bought by moms and pops who bought the land for farming for forestry, then passed on to their kids who incorporated the land to preserve the ownerships. This is private land.
the difference is that this is not "backyards" but a lot of non-used land which belong to very rich people with a lot of land who could give it to them
What make you think it's unowned? Land in the Americas have almost entiredly been bought by settlers over the past 200 years except in a few areas designated as national parks.
The mountain I seeing outside my window right now, that most people have no idea is private property. I met the dude who owns it at a bar, whose great great grand dad bought it during the Klondike gold rush 150 year ago.
Thing is, third world countries are so sick of being irrelevant and called poor, they turn to doing things like this to earn a shred of respect from the rest of the world
yeah, the government is here for us, right.
Look up the Favela Bairro project. Its strange because it suggests the opposite. The 'grant of legal ownership' thing is part of it. The issue here is that the government and developers are overruling the local authority who run the scheme.
the government,as soon as the campaign is over and they are voted into office, 9 times out of 10, does an about face, and puts their own agenda in place. usually implements some sort of new bullshit tax, " because that's what the people want"... I'm so sick of government bullshit...it's a wonder people just don't revolt....

Woah, woah. Brazil is just now being given attention for being a shithole of a country? I'm sorry but this should of been brought into the limelight decades ago. The place is literally a country made for anarchy. I really want to go into detail for every single problem my people have to face every single day, but I'll just let the people reading this to find out themselves.
I remember seeing somewhere that Venezuela, or some country like that is known for being the most dangerous country in the world. But from personal experience, I feel like whatever they face, Brazilians have got it 10-fold. And yes I know it's not the only place with a lot of problems, but it's personal for me because I'm from there. Just make sure if you're vacationing there for the Olympics, you have the Secret Service on you at all times. Or, the be frank, you're as good as dead, or homeless stuck in a foreign country because your passport got stolen from some 12 year old with a handgun.
Because the government there, couldn't care less about your problems.
+Christopher Martins you're being a little dramatic. I also live in São Paulo and visit Rio frequently. It has problems, many actually, but I have never been robbed or shot, or gotten Zika. And I don't have personal security guards. So just stop. Brazil is a wonderful country full on wonderful people.
I never mentioned Zika, and I was joking about security guards. But anyways you're obviously either lying, or live a very privileged life. I'd say the ladder option.
Should have, not should of.
To be frank, you're an idiot to generalize an entire nation to some neighborhoods in Rio. Brazil has come a long way, but it is still a DEVELOPING nation. Knowing that, the people that do come visit this amazingly beautiful and friendly country, should have in mind that it is far from perfection, and they should take the necessary precautions to not look like an easy target. In Rio not everywhere is dangerous, just some neighborhoods and also other areas at night.. you wouldn't walk around looking like a tourist in the Bronx at night, would you? It's the same in Rio or every other metropolis in the WORLD. Don't believe every comment from these so called "brazilians" that don't even know their own country.
Rio isn't the only city that tries to hide their poor.
What part of the video did that claim that? I just I missed it.

They shouldn't even hold the olympics in such undemocratic places. This is going to happen every time they do.
Wait for World Cup in Qatar... goes the very same path.
Qatar is far richer than Brazil is. Qatar won't have the same problems Brazil is, Qatar's main issue is trying to show the world how rich it is buy overspending and building lavish olympic building designs.
Qatar is rich, but has bad human rights
The olympics may be good for many people in Qatar, because the more international attention Qatar gets they may feel pressured to have a reform on human rights. That would be my hope.
Why is this in my recommended 4 years later
This is honestly ridiculous, this is how I see it, so let's say George is a father of 5 children and he gets word that the president is coming to visit his home for dinner. All the children go to get themselves ready for the President's arrival except for one child which is the youngest of the 5. That one child cries and begs for George to help him get ready but all George can think about is the president arriving. George can either choose to help his one child get ready, or send him off somewhere else where he wouldn't have to hear the child's crying. Any good person would help their child get ready, so why can't Brazil's government invest in helping THEIR people.

Well, 6 years later they almost have 11 million
I don't really see whats wrong. Rio's infrastructure is based around tourism and if the place does not look pleasing to the eyes of tourists, people wont come. The government is doing what is needed to get more money for the city. Through a political and business point of view they have to make Rio look as good as possible especially with the Olympics. If Hawaii looked like trash everywhere, people will not go there for tourism, they clean up as much as they can to get the most money.
What's wrong is that they're hiding and kicking the poor out of their homes so that they can make money that benefits the rich instead of helping the poor people
I agree and the Zika virus isn't helping either.
But a government cannot even try to help the immense amounts of poor people without money which is only received through huge donations or tourism. For a city or country to invite tourists, the place has to look good which is what they are doing.
+Benito Chacko but that's not what they are gonna do with the immense amount of money they receive from tourism. They money is not being directly used to help those in poverty, so what are yo saying?

Watching vox's videos makes me only frustrated.
I know right!
... and sad.
Watching any news in general has that effect... I cant remember the last time I saw good news anywhere.
People aren't interested in good news, because deep inside, they wanna know someone out there is having it worse than they do in order to feel good about their own lives. That's why bad news are more popular than good news.

So you pronounced Barra as Bahha? Why didnt you pronounce Rio like Hio?
Aaron Zhang its Portugiese pronunciation bro
because he used the english pronunciation. In BR portuguese, "Rio" is something like Hee-oo (short oo)
Ok so if they pronounced Barra as Bahha in the video, why didn't they pronounce Rio as Hio? Why did they use the English pronunciation on Rio, but not Barra?
Aaron Zhang Cause it sounds strange saying "Barra" without making the "R" sound like a "H". Rio on the other hand sounds perfectly normal saying it as it sounds, foreigners might have trouble saying Rio with a "H" sound like it is in Portuguese.
Maybe because it is a double R
Brazilians don't get it. Tourism is essential for the city's long term development. This hiding the poor doesn't sound nice but it serves an economic purpose for the benefit of all.
But it never works. Rio has hosted big events and made tourist money, but the city never gets better.
Problem is, the city isn't getting better. They are just spending the money to make the city look good for a little bit, and then tear it all down afterwards. Even if they do get profit, they probably just spend it on masking their city up again for the next big event.
The moneys not going to the poor either way, that's the point of this whole video
You think they're going to bulldoze that nice new museum as soon as the Olympics is over?
Not with corrupt politicians
I feel really bad for those poor people, their govenment should spend money to help poor rather than building wall around them
The government in Brazil is made for politicians not for brazilians.

Brazil government must stop this portrayal scheme of being a 1st world country and deploying effors to obscure that majority of its citizens are suffering and less benefited. Infrastructures may attract tourists, however, the welfare and well-being of the populace must never be abridge.
They might argue that country's tourism industry could give astronomical budget for the government to finance the needs of the society. BUT GOVERNMENT IS NOT BUSINESS. SERVICE FIRST BEFORE PROFIT. I am totaly speechless!
R’s aren’t pronounced as H in Portuguese. The accent of some Brazilians makes it seem as such. The proper pronunciation of those two r’s In Barra is a very heavy rasping sound that comes from the throat. Such a sound isn’t used in the English language.
At least he tried
I'm not condemning him for trying. What I don't appreciate is the misinformation he gives when he says Rs' are pronounced as H.
It depends where you're from
