Justin; Speaking from years of being a mechanic. When you put any type of rubber bushings or boots on don't use spray lubes, they tend to deteriorate the rubber. Instead use dish soap to lubricate and slide the boots on, it's harmless to rubber and dries up shortly so the boots don't pop off. Also I would recommend that anything that goes in and out of the water regularly after it's dry, spray the boot area with silicone spray to keep the boots from cracking, it will wash off next time in water. You could use silicone to install the boots but again it won't dry and the boots may pop off no matter how tight the clamps are. Looks like that medium size boot next to it will be next, look at all the cracks in the bellows grooves. Marty

@@SimrKhera WD40 is a petroleum based lube and as with all petroleum based lubes it reacts with rubber causing swelling and loose connections with time, Soap is slippery when wet and dries to a powdery film as it dries. Ever pull an inner tube out of the package? It's covered with soap powder to keep it from dry-rotting on the shelf. Same goes for transmissions, years ago they changed to type of rubber in the seals and had to get rid of the older petroleum base fluids and replace them with synthetic Mercon\Dextron style fluids because petroleum based oils eat up rubber and it took years to figure it out. But you don't have to believe me just go fill your master cylinder with an oil based fluid and report back after you get out of the hospital because the rubber seals blew out.

FYI outdrives should be pulled and greased and fluid changed yearly. Mercruisers are known for the splines to get stuck if not well greased. It is an expensive repair. After 30 years in the marine business I've seen this lesson learned all to often.

Justin, I agree with Dock Master, we need to talk you thru removing outdrive to do this from drive side.
Hopefully you have shift shaft end back to 6in center to center dimension.
When outdrive is off easy to check engine alignment with $50 tool. Need to grease gimbal bearing and pivots.
Should think about fresh water pump replacement maybe this year if previous owner hadn't. Lower unit grease should be changed before each winter and the engine oil. All easy stuff for you, have fun on the water. Those boys should be double skiing by end of the season.

Good ole petroleum jelly aka vasoline on them rubber boots keeps them from dry rotten and cracking and if you have chrome or stainless steel pieces on your toys for big boys it will keep it from rusting up once you put them away for the season and if you have stains in the carpet of your boat 🛥 you can get a bottle of Coke, some Dot3brake fluid and some hot water and mix together spray on the stained area and scrub out the stains it is a old Remedy I use when detailing works really well

I had a 30' cruiser and had twin 5.0L Volvo's with the XDP Composite drives, and so many recalls on those. I had to change the bellows every year just to make sure they didn't spring a leak. The boat was kept in the water year round and used here in Texas in a fresh water lake. I was lucky in that Volvo paid for three of them due to recalls, and then the local mechanics putting them together wrong one time. I was almost going to do a conversion on them to change them over to DPS out drives, but ended up selling the boat. Volvo offered to swap them out for me for the discounted rate of about $19K back in 2009. I passed on that "generous" offer! 🤷‍♂ 🤦‍♂ So Volvo knows they made a bad product, and then wants me to pay even more to change them out! The best part, if I accepted the offer I would have to sign an non-disclosure agreement and give up all rights to sue them because they were saving me so much money by using this offer. I would also not be able to talk about how crappy the outdrives were. Other than that, I loved that boat, but 10'itus got me and upgraded to a larger newer boat!

Hi. The spiral sheathing is to protect the shift cable from the hot exhaust manifold. Also, you might need to adjust the shift cable is it doesn't shift perfectly from forward to neutral and to reverse. Happy boating!

MLT is right. WD 40 not really a lube in that sense. It absorbs water. I noticed that you don't have a Marine Band radio on board. It's something you should have either to talk to others on their boats or for calling in an emergency or responding to one. You sure wouldn't want to run out of gas in the middle of the lake. It's like having the CB in the truck. Sure you have a cell phone having the radio on CH 16 can get you help faster.
Stay safe out there and hopefull the spot market will be better.

They're almost always on lake Hartwell a relatively small inland lake, I highly doubt many, ( if any) boats have marine radios on them. Unlike the great lakes there's no commercial shipping or probably coast guard on the water and they're usually the ones that monitor channel 16

@@daddyof3girls09 i live in NC and by Lake Chatuge. It borders both NC and GA. The NC DNR monitors Ch 16 and I belive they do on the GA sidI know there was an accident a few years ago where someone anchored their boat at night and had no lights of any kind on to alert others they were there. Sometime in the middle of the night another boat doing about 20MPH didn't see the boat until it was to late maneuver. The boat that hit the other one was able to get DNR in NC. It took some time because the DNR boat is in a yard about 300 yards from my house and the boat launch is 4.5 miles away. No one was hurt but the anchored boat went under. There is always radio chatter going on at the lake. :)

My FIL used to say Coors is "panther piss" personally I've never tasted it, but I'm not a beer fan at all either, no matter the brand. Enjoy the lake, hopefully this week I'll be getting the pop-up out and dewinterize it (if mother nature cooperates here in Michigan) this week is supposed to be rain rain rain highs in the 50's to low 60's
