+Vince Todakonzie I'd say, not. Lucas (at the time) was so integral, creating the plot, story, script, etc. But Williams (whom Spielberg had already used for Jaws) added such gravitas w/the music. So glad Abrams used him for Episode VII
+Vince Todakonzie I agree with Scott. I'd say probably not as well. It's an intriguing question, and unfortunately one that might never have a definitive answer. It's somewhat similar to speculating how athletes from different eras would fare against one another today. What would someone like Jerry Goldsmith have done had he been tapped to score the film instead? George Lucas sure feels as though a great deal of the original trilogy's success is due to the emotional appeal of its music. He has stated, "When you get into this kind of score, it's a much more complex and difficult undertaking, and if you don't have somebody who really knows what they're doing, it can get out of hand and go crazy very fast. About 90 percent of the Star Wars films are music. It's done in a very old-fashioned style, as silent films, so that the music kind of tells the story. A lot of the emotional content is carried through the music as much as through the scenes themselves." I think the only thing you can say with any degree of certainty is the film would've certainly felt a heck of a lot differently had someone else been tasked to score the film. A moving score is what gives a film it's soul. In my opinion, it's absolutely as important as any character featured in the movie. I believe most films at the time were primarily using popular music for their soundtracks, and I can't imagine hearing various disco-esque themes running throughout the Star Wars universe. Had that been the case, the film would feel awfully dated in that regard, but thankfully it was always Lucas' intention to find a composer who could write in the classic Hollywood style of the '30s and '40s. And as a result, Star Wars is often credited as ushering in the beginning of a revival of grand symphonic scores in the late '70s, and Williams' use of a technique known as leitmotif played an integral role in mentally and emotionally anchoring certain parts of the film to the soundtrack. It was the same way with his work on Jaws the previous year. Spielberg said, "John became the shark when the shark failed to show up for work because of mechanical difficulties. John became the musical leviathan and provided Jaws with a signature. It was as important as the shark itself. Without that musical signature, Jaws would have been half as successful." Anyway, I don't think the Star Wars universe would feel nearly as magical or timeless without Williams' efforts, but then again, that's probably true of any film he has scored. There's a reason why he's the second most-nominated individual (behind none other than Walt Disney) with 50 Academy Award nominations. He's even lost the highly prestigious award to himself in the past, as he's one of the few to experience being nominated twice in the same year. John Williams is a god among mere mortals.
+Vince Todakonzie Controversial, yes but a very good question. I would say no it wouldn't have been as good. If it had been just as good without the Williams score, then surely that means the music would be meaningless almost?
+Captain Spaulding I agree. And the use of leitmotifs really tied all the films together. Final Fantasy VI used leitmotifs excellently and that made that game very popular and really brought the whole Final Fantasy series to a new level of popularity. Makes me wish I had stuck with the violin I played in school so I could write my own music based around a leitmotif.
LondonDisperses I totally agree. Whether it's being used in a game or a film, it's a very powerful and effective weapon to have in one's arsenal. And John Williams is a master at the craft.

[FORCE AWAKENS SPOILERS AHEAD] Near the end of the movie when Rey was walking those stone steps, my hopes were up. Were we finally going to see Luke Skywalker? When Luke was seen standing there and the classic star wars orchestra started playing I was both incredibly happy yet so sad at the same time because I knew the movie was almost over. I got in this almost panic-like state where I tried to absord everything I could, just like when you wake up one minute before your alarm going off and you're trying to get that one minute of sleep. When the credits started rolling and I heard that amazing music again in a long time, I just stood there for a good minute. My friends were ready to leave while I just stood there with a tear in my eye and a smile on my face. The music brought so many memories to my mind. The least I could do was clap. I was so glad that this movie delivered what it had to and it lived to it's hype.
It really did. The fact that it also had quite a few references to the original trilogy and prequels made it all the better. Being 17 now I felt like I was 6 again. Mo vie of the year,on my way to see it for the 5th and final time. Until it comes out on Blu-ray that is
+Konsta Nurmi Yeah i know what you mean. THere were a good few moments in the movie where i thought to myself "here comes Luke" like that scene where Kylo Ren is trying to use the force to grab Lukes saber or where Han confronts Ren. Was kind of sad that Luke was only in it for like less than 1% of the movie but seeing his face made me really excited for the next part. What confuses me though is, how the fuck do they have Lukes old blue lightsaber from Empire? Didn't that fall down the big pit in Empire along with his hand? Hence why he builds his own green one for Return.
I was 2 years old in 1977 when the Original Star Wars was in theaters. The first time I saw the movie was in 1978 on a cable box called On TV, which was a new TV subscription service only showing movies. I watched Star Wars every time it was on. This was before VCRs and HBO. And I watched from A Long Time Ago in a galaxy far far away to the end of the end credits. Still one of my favorites and it has one of the best scores in cinematic history.
As a 6 year old in 1977 we saw this movie 6 times. And each time we stayed until the end of all the credits to hear this song playing so loud it would shake the theater. 👍
Last night I watched all 6 movies and still I have to say that nothing is better than the original trilogy! A New Hope will always be my favourite one! :)
Untill Disney came back and took a massive shit on everything turning one of the best developed sagas, with a very well written character development into a movie made for kids

So hope so this theme is epic 30 years later :) hearing it on IMAX in 2015 would a a dream come true :)
I can't wait for nothing about Star Wars!!! Gimme Right Now!!!!!!Arggghhh!! hahaha
Agreed
[FORCE AWAKENS SPOILERS AHEAD]
Near the end of the movie when Rey was walking those stone steps, my hopes were up.
+Scottishwolf89 someone found it in space, like the big eye girl thing or someone else
+Scottishwolf89 A good question, for another time.
HO-LY SHIT. I HAD THE EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE.
Possibly one of the most perfect piece of music score ever composed.
This song never gets old
Neither does the movie.
@@HEADBANGERSBALLER 100% correct
Never
At 3:19 anyone who grew up on this understands.
I don't know why but 0:56 to 1:44 gives me chills and makes me emotional and the transition at 1:45 is really epic.
This entire song gives me the creeps! LOVE STAR WARS
1:45 is the point I always wait for during the end of a Star Wars movie
Kombatant Champion Same here!
John Williams have a amazing ability to make every single one of his works a masterpeice
As a 6 year old in 1977 we saw this movie 6 times. And each time we stayed until the end of all the credits to hear this song playing so loud it would shake the theater. 👍
Okay there is so many great themes and music moments in the Star Wars films, but i freakin love that looping portion from 2:17-2:23.
It’s like the sounds of a fighting jet spinning in a space battle
This music is for all of those who look towards the stars....
*Light pollution intensifies*
This theme gives me all the feels of being little
Last night I watched all 6 movies and still I have to say that nothing is better than the original trilogy! A New Hope will always be my favourite one! :)
Untill Disney came back and took a massive shit on everything turning one of the best developed sagas, with a very well written character development into a movie made for kids
@@Silly_Entertainment_Co. I think the recent 3 films, while still not as good as the first 6, still hold up well comparatively
@@reallifedoor4536 idiot woman learns to duel like a master jedi and beats evil guy that has trained for his whole life.
"Somehow palpatine returned"
Then they just basically get rid of luke just because "he done fr 🥸"
The battle of crait sucks.
I can do more examples but im lazy but yeah you get my point, they basically ruined the character development element in the story and just threw in some random characters that nobody likes because they lack personality
2:16 I can’t help but feel joy when this part plays.
Star Wars is one of the few films where I actually sit all through the end credits just to listen
Doctor: You have less than six minutes to live.
Me:
May the Fourth Be With You! And of course Happy 40th Anniversary of "Star Wars!"

My funeral music when they bring out my ashes
We did it lads, another year of school complete.
That was less of an achievement last year, 2020 has been fucked
Gives me chills every time.
Aw man! This is so far the only piece that gives me tears. Absolutely amazing job on Williams part!!
I love this track by John Williams and I love Star Wars, this composer is an absolute legend.
Rest in peace Carrie, rest in peace.
anyone else tearing up ? im sobbing
In my Sequel Trilogy Rewrite, this theme plays at the end of Rise of Skywalker to honor Star Wars’ roots
This is best score out of all of them. Those trumpets still give me Goosebumps to this day! 30 years later. Triumph.
This will be played at my Funeral Pyre. It is some of the most inspiring music I have heard and I have been Star Wars Forever!

High fantasy in space. Wish we had more of these.
“Fifteen years ago I set out to make a film for a generation, growing up without fairytales.
Star Wars was my own elaborate fantasy, but it's popularity has gone beyond anything even I had imagined.
In years to come I hope that you, your children, and your children's children will enjoy experiencing this saga as much as I have.”
- George Lucas
Every high school graduation should end with this !
When that settlement finally lands on the Moon, or when that person finally grabs the soil of Mars, I want this music to be played.

Heffsta02 It was awesome
Heffsta02 So what you're saying is you'll watch/buy/play anything that has that logo on it. Let me guess, The Force Awakens was the best damn movie till rogue one came out and now it sucks?
I really hope "The Force Awakens" end with this exact theme, and nothing else.
God knows the movie ripped enough things from episode 4, I'm surprised it didn't.
It's terrible. Sorry
