My whole thing is why the hell are people so worried about measurements when in actual content you won't see the difference. It's legit still going to operate the same it makes no sense. So there are many things he isn't thinking about. He's just going by what's said not how it actually operates. It's a bit ridiculous, peope should stop this measurement hype they are all similar. The Sony a90j is different because they pushed it hard and put a heatsink in there. Just a got a 77 inch c1 with the new panel. I was going to make it a "G1," but you make a valid point. That tv was 3k usd and I would hate for it die early. I plan to keep this amazing tv for a decade. I'd hate for it to be deadl in a year or two.
Since GPUs were mentioned, I'll add that in the past you could flash the VBIOS from a higher tier AMD card to a lower one and it would work without any issues and unlock additional performance because those lower tier products were just crippled higher tier chips with power delivery and cooling being close to equal. This of course does not seem to be the case here
you still can; and some cards come with two bios, same with Mobo's, and some, like asus, straight up refuse to respect the power standard of your cpu. the reason C/GPU's are binned, is so you have a guaranteed performance, if you got a C/GPU off a really lucky waffer, you can even undervolt it, and overlock it for more speed at a lower temp; some will spit out errors, some will run fine. the real issue you run into now is that the power phases are lack luster and tend to cause AOE damage when they blow. but for example i can run my massive CPU at 4.6ghz all core; which is well above the 3.4Ghz all core and it hovers at 60C; if i let the mobo/cpu handle max core in auto, i get 80C temp spikes and not that much faster performance while running at full voltage. some cakes just come out better from the oven, it's life.
@@ClannerJake you can't anymore. They now physically disable the cores if they use a higher end chip in a lower end gpu. It wasn't just AMD either, it was amd & nVidia.

This is a great explanation of the small benefit vs the large consequences. I'm a C9 owner so this doesn't affect me in any way, but I would just sit and enjoy my new C1 if it were me.... after disabling ASBL of course.
@@robertt9342 Probably. In the case of ASBL, it is not a "small benefit" to me... it is the difference between a TV that is simply unwatchable or watchable. I'm willing to accept the risk.
I want to feel sorry for all of the people who will end up doing this “hack” and voiding their warranties, but honestly even without this video they should know better. Great video Vincent!
I just got my 48" c1 last week and it seems nice and bright.. don't even see the need to try to up the brightness any further, but, I'm using it as a monitor and don't have direct light hitting the screen.
I use mine as a monitor as well, but in a fairly well lit lounge. It's plenty bright enough, any brighter and I think I'd want to turn the brightness down in HDR content. Previously was using a flagship 10 year old 3D Plasma, that maxed about 400 nits and often was difficult to see.
My Oled B6 bought in nov 2016 I had to give up. It had burn ins and yellow was mainly showing as green. That TV had Oled brightness to 100. Now I have turned down the brightness to 50 on my C1. Still good in my livingroom. Hoping for a long life. I would never push an Oled Tv to even higher brightness than it was made for.
Well said, just one observation, the G1 has max size of 77inch. In an interview with a senior LG individual, it has been alluded to that the 83 inch G1 is incoming (not sure if this is true). So my point is if someone has a desire to have the 83 inch screen size the only option is the C1 currently, therefore they might push and change the settings.
Ok so you can tell by Vincent’s phrasing that he’s being careful not to step on LG’s toes. Yes, the G1 and C1 use the same panel precisely because running two lines would be more costly. The G1/C1 difference is mostly for price discrimination: Charging higher prices to customers that are willing to pay it. Given how the G1 mounts and the shape of the frame, the C1 should have better thermals. There’s a chance that LG selects better panels off the line for the G1 series. But that would probably be expensive as well. So the natural conclusion is that the panels are identical, and there is no harm in hacking the C1.
@James L: That's your own opinion, most of which are conjecture and not proven. We are relaying LG's official statement, and can conclusively prove that switching the service menu code from C1 to G1 alters other operational characteristics of the TV besides merely HDR peak brightness.
@@hdtvtest it’s absolutely the case that performance could suffer because the G1 and C1 are tuned differently based on other characteristic. And clearly LG is within their rights to void the warranty if someone does this. But the risks of damaging the display are likely minimal.
@@RobertK1993 I agree with the other comment - I think underrated may be a tad oversimplifying . I would have never considered a Panasonic last year - but hdmi 2.1 features , a cheaper RRP , LG dramatically transforming its webos (which is my fave tv interface ) - probably among other things - but this year I’m leaning towards the jz2000 (if the reviews justify the marketing). I’m not an AV enthusiast - I’m just a guy who wants an OLED tv in a relatively well lit room 😂. Panasonic don’t sell [latest models ] in the US , Canada , Australia and probably other HEDCs . It’s just not accessible to everyone . I do hope for Panasonic’s sake , market competition’s sake as well as my own consumer interests that the Panasonic TVs of this year push the pedal even more when it comes to good products.
That's interesting to hear. Where did you get your C6? I got mine in Currys and put in for repair over 2 weeks ago due to screen burn and a stuck pixel. Been thinking they won't be able to repair it due to the curved screen, and getting excited that they might replace it with a CX or a C1!
Awesome vids! I’ve been researching this and haven’t been to get this answer. How does one find out what factory their LG OLED panel is coming from? I’ve finally settled on getting the C1 77inch…this has nothing to do with the hack btw.
I would wonder if it may even be different 'binning' by LG to determine which panels from the G1 manufacturing line may not be 100% ok on test but can be suitable for C1 model.
Yes however if u turn off updates and when ur tv breaks, but still can acces the menu. You can just turn ur C1 back into a C1 before contacting support to still remain your warranty. Or update the tv if u rather have the features from an update instead of the G1 version.
Although the Sony TVs are completely different, this is somewhat similar to the Sony X900H situation where owners of the X900H were updating the firmware from the X90J to boost their X900H.
@@bobbobson4030 the firmware from the X90J that was released about a month ago increased peak brightness, also on HDR for the X900H. Also, it supposedly fixed the 4K120Hz blurring. Sadly, the mirror for firmware is not available anymore. You’ll have to Google it, someone might have it or post it on a website. It was up on official Sony support site for X90J page and the r/Bravia Reddit page. It was taken down when people started doing it.
@@bobbobson4030 I doubt it. No one has reported that their X900H was damaged in any way. However, like this C1/G1 situation, you’ll be locked out of any future updates for your specific TV. Not sure what you mean in your second question.
I like how people worry or diss oleds over burn in but now they want them brighter. I bet the brighter panels will either shorten the panels lifespan or it will give them a higher chance of burn in within fewer years than previous models
Unless you know you're going to wall mount it, you'll be stuck with either the ridiculous "gallery" stand, or those ugly AF Sony styled legs. But I do agree on not messing around with the service menu of a C1 in an attempt to make it a G1, because it still won't be and it's going to get hotter. After having a B6 that prematurely died *two months* after the warranty expired, and getting kind of a lemon C8, I wouldn't trust the manufacturing quality of a C1 to not quickly die doing something like this.
@@alexanderulv3886 If it has any noticeable screen defects under normal viewing conditions for a start. My C8 has some of the worst screen uniformity I've ever seen, and during any scene that is between the 10% and 20% black range, I see a huge pillar that's darker than everything else. It goes up three-quarters of the screen and is about four inches wide. It destroys the image, and there's nothing that can be done about it.
You have integrity my friend. Besides the average person isn’t going to perceive 10% improvement in brightness. People should just go buy a g1 if it’s that important to them. Stop being a cheapskate. The only thing I don’t like about my C1 is the remote control. Can you imagine a Senior Citizen with pre dementia or memory issues trying to remember how to get the remote to pause the picture? There’s no button for that. One has to remember which buttons to push to get that function and many other functions. This TV is not Senior Citizen friendly at all. LG should put a disclaimer on this model stating if you have memory issues you shouldn’t purchase. Better yet, LG should bite the bullet and design a remote control option for the C1 that puts the buttons everybody knows and loves on the remote. I watched my Dad pre dementia trying so hard to operate his beautiful new C1. It wasn’t pretty. It was heartbreaking. Shame on LG for doing this.
Who are these people that say these Oleds are not bright enough. I have a GX, i don't use the peak brightness and with HDR it hurts my eyes after some watching cause it's so bright. people who claim "this is so dark I can't see", maybe check with your eye doctor just to be sure.
Yeah... and watch "Days of Our Lives" on it for the rest of your miserable life? ;) Life's too short to waste it on following those twisted sinister "LG- rules"!.. :)
My previous LG Oled TV was the model 5 years earlier than the C1 and I received a warning on my screen that there was a recall of my TV due to heat issues and the possibility of fire. About 2 hours after that warning my TV did catch fire in the power supply. Fortunately I was in the room when the 1st bang hit and then the fire I was able to rip the power cord out of the wall and because it was wall mounted in a corner the fire didn't burn my plaster wall. They replaced the TV under re-call warranty with the C1 and I have noticed it runs way cooler than my previous oled.
Hi Vince, I have a problem with my new LG C1: when I'm gaming on PC and there is a big explosion on screen (i.e. in Doom Eternal), sometimes the TV shuts itself off and reboots. It's like if the ABL doesn't know how to handle the situation and just shuts off the TV. If you search online you can find a lot of people that have the same issue, even with prior generations of LG OLEDs. Your opinion on this matter would be greatly appreciated
I had the problem with a cheap 2.1 cable. Not all cables are the same, and even « certified » ones sometimes have problems. I changed my cheap cable to a 3x as expensive Belkin 2.1 8K cable and now I don’t have any trouble.
All due respect is there any trick for LG CX? Great video by the way maybe one of your best but to be honest all your videos are tremendous and very helpful!!!
I have a LG Oled 2020 BX. I discovered the service menu Sub B/C and tried around. By changing the Sub C to 210 (default 128) and the Sub B from 128 to 127 (to keep black black), I achieved a brighter picture and maybe moved the BX closer to the CX. What are your thoughts about it?

I just got my 48" c1 last week and it seems nice and bright.. don't even see the need to try to up the brightness any further, but, I'm using it as a monitor and don't have direct light hitting the screen.
I use mine as a monitor as well, but in a fairly well lit lounge. It's plenty bright enough, any brighter and I think I'd want to turn the brightness down in HDR content. Previously was using a flagship 10 year old 3D Plasma, that maxed about 400 nits and often was difficult to see.
Thanks Vincent, as always great video ! Any news regarding the 42 inch OLED and the expected release date?

NEVER buy a TV based on promises. Buy a TV for what it can do right NOW.
I might be totally wrong on this. But I thought the CX's 40 Gbps bandwidth isn't enough for DV 120 fps since DV is 12 bit.
Very clear explanation. Great Job! but ... my tv is a VIZIO does any of these instructions apply to this brand?

June probably Panasonic very underrated TV brand very close Sony Bravia picture quality.

I have a x900h, how can I do this??
@@bobbobson4030 the firmware from the X90J that was released about a month ago increased peak brightness, also on HDR for the X900H. Also, it supposedly fixed the 4K120Hz blurring.
Sadly, the mirror for firmware is not available anymore. You’ll have to Google it, someone might have it or post it on a website. It was up on official Sony support site for X90J page and the r/Bravia Reddit page. It was taken down when people started doing it.
@@UserInterface00 Any chance it would damage the hardware? Have they changed it in the new TV?
@@bobbobson4030 Look up the AVSFORUM.COM owners thread. They have the link
The latest Oled model are more resistant to burn in than the previous models. Dunno about lifespan though.
Just buy a G1 if u want evo, why risking breaking your(C1) tv for this, if is not broken don’t fix 😎
It fixed the HDR luminance calibration for me, but colors were less accurate oob.
But the word is the sweeping stand trim makes the C1 actually sound better than G1. So my choice is to compromise on the sound or the picture?
@@Neonmirrorblack the CX is my first Oled, how do I know if it’s a lemon? 🍋

Yeah... and watch "Days of Our Lives" on it for the rest of your miserable life? ;)
Life's too short to waste it on following those twisted sinister "LG- rules"!..

Hi Vince,
I have a problem with my new LG C1: when I'm gaming on PC and there is a big explosion on screen (i.e. in Doom Eternal), sometimes the TV shuts itself off and reboots. It's like if the ABL doesn't know how to handle the situation and just shuts off the TV. If you search online you can find a lot of people that have the same issue, even with prior generations of LG OLEDs.
Your opinion on this matter would be greatly appreciated
