Mum’s April Garden, Japanese Maple & Richard’s Planting Debut 🌺🌺🌺

- In today’s video we are first taking a quick tour of Mum’s lovely courtyard garden which is looking particularly gorgeous this April.
Next, I have bought myself an Acer Palmatum Bloodgood to add to a container in Woodland Courtyard. This beautiful Japanese Maple forms a branched bush with a stunning leaf. When it is not pruned, the Acer can grow up to 1.5 metres high. It can bear the sun and shade. It’s equipped for the Winter but in a pot it should be protected against severe frost. Should turn a beautiful bright crimson red in the Autumn.
Finally, I’ve persuaded Richard to try his hand at planting his very first container (he definitely has a different planting style to me 😊) so we are planting one hanging basket each, with the following wonderful plants:
Acorus Gramineus ‘Ogon’ & Hakonechloa Macra Aureola (both ornamental grasses)
Heucheras ‘Fire Alarm’ & ‘Grape Timeless’
Brunneras ‘Jack Frost’ & ‘Looking Glass’
Calluna Vulgaris ‘Spring Glow’ (a Heather)
Trailing Ivies (unknown varieties)

Lol, it's just so funny that the gardening tools are laying on the floor. Most RUclipsrs would be hiding them and tidying up before filming. This is what makes this channel so great in my view. It's all a bit over the place and great to watch.

Hi Jeanette, oh your best video yet! The picking parts of your garden to weed is a great idea as it can be a bit overwhelming when looking at the whole garden and I will certainly do that now.

Yes,i remember you planting the thrift at your mums. She has some beautiful shrubs , it's hard to single one out. At the moment i love the azalea. I haven't seen a variegated flower like that. Like a little school boy who would rather be out playing than in class LOL. The baskets are beautiful! If you hang them up high will you be able to see all the colorful plants so well? Also, your mum's garden looks so nice with all the blue color, and her potted azalea is so pretty! Your Japanese maple looks nice (I like the turtle) and they say that they stay smaller when grown in pots. Thanks for a great video!
Hi Sue and yes you’ve hit the nail on the head, that’s just what he’s like. 😂 actually we have hung the baskets now and I did think of that, so they are quite low so we can still see the plants. Mine is painted mint green mostly to preserve it. Hi Janette. How lovely your Mum's garden looks. Just the right size for her. Not a leaf out of place, thanks Mum 🧑🌾. When it comes to weeding, l must admit if it rained l thought good l don't have to tackle the weeds today🙃. They grow faster than the plants! I almost choked on my tea, Richard planting up the hanging basket. So good to see him joining in enthusiastically in your videos again 😁. The faux grass looks better than the coir, so l am going to do that too as coir doesn't last long. And l was given a remnant of faux grass so even cheaper 😁. Your mum’s garden is lovely. Great video Janette. I have just made a flower border out of part of my lawn. Now busy laying concrete sleepers and gravel to make a path. It will make the lawn half the size by the time I have finished. I love having the extra room for more plants!

I simply love your garden spaces! Everything is gorgeous! I am in zone 8b in the US, and our temperatures have already reached over 80°F. 😳 It can present a challenge as everything I plant must be able to handle hot and humid weather. On a positive note, we have a very long growing season. Richard is such a trooper! I literally laughed out loud when he "teased" the plant! Lol!

I have 7 all in containers at the moment, until we sort out our final home. I thought you were very trusting letting Richard plant up one of the baskets. They both look great. 😊😊😊

Hi Janette, lovely to visit your Mum's very pretty garden again. Her weigela is stunning. My Mum had a weigela also. I've never planted one myself as I think it would need to go near a fence and that would be too easy and a delight for our little furry guests and very disappointing for me. I really like weeding because there's no decisions to make. You see a weed and you pull it out, easy. Planting is much harder, too many decisions. Think I'll take your tip about making where I weed next into a game. Such fun to see Richard gardening and I think he was very proud of his efforts. Both your baskets looked great! Hope you have a lovely week. We're expecting a week of rain so my garden is going to love it. Love Bron xx

Well done Richard, love Acers my favourite, iv got quite a lot in the garden they are beautiful,one it's blood good my husband is a gas engineer it's been in an old brass water pump for more than 30years and still looks great we moved it from my old garden to my new one, we were in our old garden 20yrs then moved to this one and we've been hear 19years this Sept. That was really funny have a great week Janette. ❤x

Your mother’s garden looks lovely. That Azalea is stunning. I also noticed the climbing Hydrangea, with flower buds developing. Mine has none at present. It did flower a couple of years ago buy not since. I assume it’s because it’s climbing up a largish Oak Tree, along with another species - an evergreen version from Mexico, and is nowhere near the top yet.
Pulling Sycamore seeds is such fun! It’s annoying how well that one germinates, yet many Acers are terrible at it. Acer grisum, the one with the fantastic peeling bark, very rarely germinates. Both I and a friend have it in our gardens and have never managed to germinate one! Bloodgood is a great choice but it will get big.
The grass that Richard so “enthusiastically” planted in the basket would look good around the base of the Acer. Those baskets look really good. I’m looking forward to seeing them up later.

Hello my friend!! Mum definitely gas green fingers doesn’t she? I’ve pulled lots of the sycamore seedlings out already, about halfway there. Yes, always amazing how the unwanteds grow extremely well 🤪 I like the idea of the grasses around the Acer (which I know is going to be too big for that planter and end up being moved), but it looks nice for the moment. Hope you’re doing well. It rained ALL this weekend here, fortunately I’d filmed this all the weekend before 🙏 have a great week Mark 💚🩷

Hi Janette, I actually like weeding although I've given up on getting rid of all of them. Now I just call it weed management. I have brunnera Looking Glass, it's probably my favorite plant and it's in bloom right now. Richard was a good sport planting a basket with you. I don't think he'd ever admit it but I think he enjoyed it since he was doing it with you. We had a slight frost the past couple nights with temperatures in the daytime nearly 80° F.
I actually like weeding too, I put my headphones on and it’s quite enjoyable. I don’t think he actually did enjoy that, most unenthusiastic 😂 it was cold too 😂 but I had fun 🤩 Glad to hear the Looking Glass is a lovely Brunnera - they’re just such great plants aren’t they?
