- We filmed this report on location in the spectacular Fujian Islands in 1993 for the UK's most popular travel programme 'Wish You Were Here?'. I was on location there for 7 days stopping off in Australia and New Zealand. Frank was an amazing bloke really and we had a good laugh on set most of the time. At the time I was working fulltime in the media industry working for BBC Radio, Thames TV and two newspapers before a business opportunity took me away from the industry. But back to the filming - Frank's wife Nesta wouldn't let him out of her sight as he was famously papped by the News of the World taking drugs with vice girls in London. What a legend! I was only 24 yrs old at the time and let me say he knew his way around the world ! I worked on the show for 4 series and was lucky to travel all over the world. They were fantastic days. This show got 20 million viewers as we just had the 4 channels back then. I just wanted to load a few snippets on the web so friends and family could see me with hair. LOL. Steve.
This takes me back to the days of lying on the carpet on my stomach as a kid with my baby bro dreaming of holidays that my family couldn't afford. Since then, I've been on several amazing long haul holidays, got married and had a child and have things beyond the dreams I had as a child. In between there were some very rough times where it felt there was no future. If anyone reading this feels like there is no future, you are wrong. Life is a crazy, beautiful and sometimes savage journey where dreams can come true without you even realising it.
SalesDriven Such an inspiring post! Thank you 🙏
Wow yeh same as me. Aged 14 I told my mum I'm going to back pack when I'm 20 and I did go to Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Bali. I got married divorced kids married again and now aged 47 reminisce of those years gone by. Crazy life but loved this theme tune. I'd get holiday brochures and cut pictures out for my mood board before they were mood boards🤣
This is exactly how my life went too.
As if you took the words right out of my mouth !
Ditto mate 👍
Great stuff.
I'm just watching this for the opening music,
This and in 2017
Gordon Giltrap 'Carnival' available on his 'Time To Reflect - A Personal Anthology' collection (as with the BBC theme too).
Couldn't agree more takes me back to the 90s when things were so much simpler in life
This just reminds me of when I was a kid :) good times
Same
Best TV Theme and Travel show there was!
Every week my mam n dad watched this in the 90s Brings back the mems I was 12 when this one was on.
This inspired me to travel to Asia,The canaries and Malta. I loved to watch this on a Monday night at 7pm to get a good happy warm vibe in winter and eventually when I was 24 I went travelling 👍I saw the 'other side of the world"
Terina Sargeant Thank you for sharing your story 🙏
The good old days when the world was much more safer and a fun place to be in. Best times ever
It's actually alot safer now by comparison.
Not really, only back then @@corneliussmiff2773
What a job to have in your twenties! That's a pretty nostalgic theme tune. I'm about your age and used to enjoy travel shows. These days I watch all sorts of vloggers her eon RUclips as they travel the world. The world's changing
That theme tune 💜
yep great memories from that TV theme
Reminds me of my late dad and his love of traveling, bless him ❤
I used to watch this with him when I was a child and all I heard was "been there"..lol
Oh that’s lovely Holly.
When the world felt safe
Many of these pacific islands and East Asia are still safe. I don't think many people would think Pakistan, Afghanistan or Sudan are safe even then.
this show inspired me so hard. now i live on an island in the pacific.
I used to watch this TV programme all the time with my parents as I was growing up.
I was barely a teenager and although this was entertaining to watch, I used to feel quite envious when they would talk about the prices.
I would think that I will never get a chance to travel like this in my life.
How wrong that turned out to be.
My first wife is Japanese and 2nd wife is Thai and I've been to many places so far.
I don't care if I have no money in my bank when I die, as long as I've seen the world.
Great attitude. You only live once.
@@hammersteve Exactly 😉
reminds me how expensive the holidays they did were!!
Awww love those 90s theme tunes sitting about probarly playing my gameboy with this or others on in the background.. its been a very tough life i never would have thought my life would go so badly wrong a few years later then this but at least Jesus Christ found me and made me strong
@Marillionboy You're right, he went on to do some radio work for a couple of years and then retired. TV legend.
This was Frank Bough's last job on national TV
This must be about the last terrestrial tv presenting job Frank did, he vanished from the screens soon after.
Yeah, who'd og guessed that he was into S&M parties.......
Judith Chalmers 💓
To this day I'm not sure this show wasn't just mocking everyone for not being whereever 'there' happened to be that week.
Frank was such a good presenter though
Incredible opening, just as I remember it. I don't remember Judith Chalmers being that robotic though.
@hammersteve Excellent presenter but how he managed to hold himself together after the scandals must have taken some guts!
Ah well, he's a goner now then. RIP
Backpacker! With hair... lol
Im happier times :(
the Fijian Islands (Fiji) in the South Pacific....
remember when travel wasn't banned and a criminal offence to do
Fuji and Fujian islands??? would have thought they could have spelt Fiji correctly having just been there...tut tut
