Here's a follow-up, on the Soviet UAZ.

I finally got to fixing the brakes, as i initially set out to do.
Turned out, it was just the master cylinder.
And of course, i also had to take it all for a quick test-run.

That setup is very similar to my VW type 2 Splitty. In your wiring situation, I use spiral wrap from the electronics store, it does thin wiring as well thicker ones with the same wrap, and easy to undo. I used it on my Haflinger.

Great video!! What a laugh! Definitely good idea to use light air pressure to flush systems. Quick and easy!
Top tip from a Lada/Soviet vehicle mechanic: as you have the old master cylinder with a metal top - drill a hole in your spare cover and pressurize the master cylinder with some compressed air. (The field manual for Lada Nivas states to do this with the air from the spare tyre...) Then all you have to do is to make sure, you refill the reservoir before it runs dry.
Greg which one is the most reliable the Lada Niva out the UAZ 469? Iam curious thanks
@@shawnwright5332 The UAZ is the more antiquated (ladder frame) construction and compared to Western vehicles both are pretty much terrible. 🙂
I'd say, if actually drive an UAZ as slow as it was intended, it will probably be more reliable. A new(er) Lada Niva then again is lightyears ahead of an (ex-army) UAZ, which in turn is lightyears ahead of lets say my own Niva 1600.
@@gregsochor they make new UAZ with modern engine and electronics was looking at importing some of these or the Lada because the Toyota 70 series Landcruiser is getting so expensive
@@gregsochor problem with the Lada is its full time 4x4 and asphalt roads tear this thing about 40-60,000 km your getting into all kinds of repairs

It sounded much healthier after changing the plug leads and anything else that might have contributed. Perhaps the zip tie separators helped. Old world peppy I call it. Fit some big chunky off road tyres and a front locker . Those cars would be hard to stop. The HUMMV has less to offer off road than the Uaz . Notice how it slips while towing despite the massive tyre and heavy deisle engine with the elevated final drives and other stout heavy components. Thanks for the video. I did miss the last one . Therefore subscriber notification did not arrive.
Reminds me of my Morris Minor, where the master cylinder was wedged between the frame rail and the torsion spring

Fantastic presentation.
The ignition work was a significant repair the brake lines and cylinders should’ve had a proper flush to remove moisture and contaminates.

Also converted my UAZ-3151 and Prado’s clutch to silicone, only thing to note is DOT5 CANNOT be used in ABS systems, as it will foam. Otherwise DOT5 everything! Though for those who like really firm pedals, Pentosin DOT4 Super or LV.
UAZ uses dot 3/dot 4. This is about the viscosity of the brake fluid. DOT 5 may be too rare for UAZ's braking system. It may be (but not necessarily) that your system will start leaking everywhere after some time. In addition, this fluid is compressed in the brake system, which slows down the operation of the brakes and causes a void effect when the brake pedal is pressed.

Awesome video, as always, but i`m just so sorry you have to deal with this atrocity of a vehicle. These "goats" (they are also called "dogs" sometimes) are hated here in Russia for a reason. I`m surprised that the body of this one hasn`t started rotting away, cuz i swear they sell them already rotting.
Oh yeah, this one has also had it's share of rust problems.
I can tell that it's had a lot of patches over the years. :)
@@KJOff-Road The reason for that is actually very simple - the when the ussr was around, they had to temper the bodies, so even though the metal was criminally thin, and the paintjobs were awful - it somewhat held against the rust. But nowadays they abolished that practice because of cost cutting, so modern bodies have rust spots as soon as they leave the factory. Seen it with my own eyes - they used to ship those via trains not far from where i was born.

You cant use DOT 4 brake fluid in these cars you need Soviet Ricine oil based BSK brake fluid (SAE70R3) or you have to replace all brake rubber parts, hoses, O rings etc using modern stuff than you can use DOT3 or 4 glycol based fluid
YES SIR YOU BE NEEDING a lift or an overhead crane!! with the crane you can place the vehicle on stands.....The UAZ door seals are not water proof are they??

I’m having a problem with my 84 469 with the brakes locking on. The more I drive the firmer the pedal gets till the pedal is rock solid and the wheels are locked up. After about 30 minutes of cooling down the pedal will be back to normal. I could really use some help if anyone has any ideas.
In the past adjusting master worked. However I’ve had to replace some wheel cylinders after they leaked all the fluid out over the winter. And it’s back to doing the same thing. Adjusting the master doesn’t seem help. The left front brakes smokes now and will still cause the pedal to go firm the more I drive.
Hey there.
So with the way you describe it, two things come to mind.
Either, the wheel cylinders have dirt or rust inside, so the piston can't move freely, and the springs struggle to press them back.
Or, the fluid is not able to freely flow back from the cylinders. this can be caused by ageing brake-hoses, that have started pealing on the inside, restricting the flow.
do they run on diesel?
Nope.
they normally have gasoline engines. (With a few exceptions)

I don't know if it's the first time i catch it on camera. but i have actually been doin' that, for a long time. and i know a lot of other mechanics, that do the same, in some form or another.
I guess it's just sort of a running joke, among mechanics :)
