  • Southern Pacific Daylight 4449, 1992! A preserved Southern Pacific GS-4 steam locomotive, based in Portland, Oregon, pulled the "San Jose Daylight," north from San Jose, California, en route home. Built in May 1941, the Northern-class 4-8-4, number 4449, was retired from regular service in October 1957. The GS-4 was restored in April 1975 to pull excursion trains, including and especially the Bicentennial "American Freedom" train in 1976. With a matched set of vintage passenger cars, this sleek streamliner operated before the requirement of "protection power," the placement of a modern diesel locomotive behind the steamer. Southern Pacific helper units were added briefly, however, to help the train over the more mountainous Oregon terrain. These July 1992 scenes are augmented with Southern Pacific's rare SD9 high hood diesels and Amtrak's F40PH cowl units on the Superliner-equipped "Coast Starlight."

    This is the most beautiful locomotive that was ever built in my opinion. I just love it.

    I got to see the Daylight up close at the Rail Fair in 1999 at Sacramento. It was awesome to see it in person. I got to meet Doyle McCormack and he couldn't have been a nicer guy. Still hope to ride an excursion route someday.

    Ah the 90's. When diesel helpers were scarce and she hauled all her proper coaches... How many daylight coaches are here today? Have any been scrapped?

      ***** I May look into building a fleet of morning daylight cars for 4449 in the future...

    • @Tahirah8
      @Tahirah8 9 лет назад +3

      that would be another option however those coaches do not have the corrugated sides and were different in a few ways. they were the later diesel coaches. You could still use them though and they would look cool.

    • @ZeldaTheSwordsman
      @ZeldaTheSwordsman 8 лет назад +4

      +Alexander Cox Well, this isn't all her proper ones. And even in the 90s I believe it required a lot of advanced arrangement to marshal this matched set together - IIRC there were a number of different owners they had to be wrangled up from. I don't think the mandatory helpers can be done away with by anything short of building dedicated passenger lines that might return her to revenue service, but you could see about raising money for Friends of 4449 to round up more surviving cars and bring them up to Amtrak requirements.

    I Wonder what happened to her set of Daylight coaches, its quite upsetting to always see her pulling mix and match cars...

    • @ZeldaTheSwordsman
      @ZeldaTheSwordsman 8 лет назад +3

      +Jacob Schiess In the collections of various private owners and museums. IIRC, even at the time of this video that was the case.
      If it's so upsetting, organize a fundraiser to enable Friends of 4449 to round up and repaint some more cars to match so that at least at home she can have a full Daylight-liveried train.
      When she ranges farther afield, she generally pulls trains made up from local railroad heritage collections (since it's cheaper to send her solo), who themselves tend not to have long matched strings of cars.

    • @LRF152
      @LRF152 8 лет назад +5

      ZeldaTheSwordsman I understand, I just think it would be cool to see her with a few proper coaches behind her like she had in the 80's and 90's. No need for such a defensive answer.

    if the modern daylight pulled its cars cars it would be less annoying
    and if they could also take away the Amtrak P42DC
    it would be complete

    • @ZeldaTheSwordsman
      @ZeldaTheSwordsman 8 лет назад

      +Mästare Kalk Yeah, well, they currently can't ditch the Amtrak P42 because they're made to use it on away trips. Partly for reasons of supplying electricity for the train on trips where the generator car gets left behind, partly because anymore the railroads want a backup engine in there just in case.
      As for the cars.. They just don't have spare funds to paint up a full set of streamlined cars in Daylight livery for 4449, although she does at least have some at her home facility that are liveried to match her. She also often borrows an observation car made for her back in her revenue days for excursions closer to home. And when 4449 travels far afield, it's generally just her and maybe her canteen tender.
      The trip in this video required a lot of advance arrangements to get a matching string all together.
