      @llenn9116 4 года назад +9

      Keep it up and remember it's not just you who gets down and gets frustrated from time to time. I learned how to play piano way back when I was still around 5 years old, but then I stopped practicing and then later on returned, and then stopped again for years, then returned, and the cycle continued. And now, thanks to the quarantine, I am earnestly practicing piano once again. But to be honest when I assessed my self, I still think I'm in the middle of the beginner level. I waisted so many years and haven't really made any significant progress. That's a little bit depressing... but I always try to encourage myself. And now I'm in my third month and I think I've made a slow yet significant progress.
      As for you, even if it gets hard, just continue. You'll get better at it at some point. 😁 Just don't stop.

    Another "bucket lister" here. 62 years behind me and no telling how many more I have left. My new keyboard should arrive next week and I'm anxious to get started. In an effort to help me remember which keys are which when learning to sight-read, I was considering some stickers that I've seen that you place on the keys, that indicate the note name, as well as its position on the staff. Do you have any thoughts on these regarding their possible value?

    • @jwlansdale
      @jwlansdale 3 года назад

      Don't use the stickers, they are a crutch. Learn the music alphabet and the location of the note C which is the note to the left of the two black key set.

    Great lesson, thank you. Slouching was the cause of my inability to go right up to all the octaves without getting into a twist so I now have that under control. Thank you also for reinforcing the fact that playing the piano is a skill which requires an enormous amount of dedication, patience and determination particularly when we get frustrated and downcast thinking that we will never make progress and make unrealistic comparisons. You have hit all the important points so your encouragement is much appreciated particularly for me as a newbie senior student.

    When my daughter was in school, she played violin and viola. I once asked her if she memorized the music. She pointed to the sheet music and said "Why should I memorize it when it's written right here" . Blew me away! I'd messed around with some instruments, but I thought that being able to site read fast enough to play straight off of the sheet music was something only 'accomplished musicians' did.

  • @leavesofdecember

    Thank you for this ! The irony being I'm actually learning the Moonlight sonata haha and my teacher threw me right into it after barely 2 weeks of piano alltogether ! I managed to learn half of the first movement now, after 2 months and I'm feeling a bit optimistic, but whenever I even think about the 3rd movement I almost lose all hope alltogether haha. My hope is to learn it all by heart by the end of the year so that would have been a whole year spent on it and my musician friend thinks that's almost too quickly haha. PATIENCE is indeed the word of the day !! or the word of the year really, but at the same time I feel the piano is teaching me so much, patience being just one of them. Faking it would be another, there just isn't any faking it, if you practice it sounds okay if you don't it shows ! big time ! And then you look at maestros who make it seem like music is pouring through their finger directily into the keys !! and you feel so utterly useless and inadequate... It really helps to have professional musicians as friends because they practice like 10 hours a day and reassure me that NO! no one woke up one day and could play anything well, everyone has to take their time to go through their own difficulties and yes, starting with the difficulties is a great thing to learn because they are also sooo individual ! It's weird and stupid, but we even tend to wish we had other people's difficulties because they seem cooler, instead of accepting the very personalized difficulties we face and then, well face them head on ! I'm now taking all the time I need to get through my own hurdles and I'm happy I'm an amateur and stand only under the pressure I put on myself, which is quite enough already haha

It'd be awesome if you could do a series on these because I'm struggling with some of the notations, like #12 for example with the little 'flutter' note as I call it in 6/8 time. Granted I'm barely into this book, it's already teaching me finger independence.

I set my goals really high but get disappointed of course when I do. I found, learning pieces I just love, like Fur Elise, is a great motivator. As a guitarist, I would kindly mention as part of posture, breathing consciously and correctly is an essential component of music practice and performance. No breath; no life. This was aptly exemplified some years back in the movie, "The Karate Kid." Spending a minute or so contemplating your breathing relative to a composition's rhythm, meter, and tempo is extraordinarily helpful in quelling stress and anxiety in advance of any music lessons or exhibition(s). Metaphorically, it is the invisible, quiet, but abiding companion of patience.

    I am self-taught and have played piano since my mid-teens and I'm now 62. I was actually IN the music biz and played with some well-known names but hung it up in the early 80's to raise a family. While I was told by many that I had/have great chops, I never learned to read nor studied actual theory. My curse was that I play[ed] and learn[ed] strictly by ear.
    Now that I'm retired and comfortable, I would like to resume my lifelong quest to finally learn piano [jazz] theory as well as sightread. However, one of the most frustrating things for me to understand has been proper fingering. I will play piano runs on tunes like I always have, but with the advent of RUclips and seeing these pianists play, I discover that my fingering is totally wrong. That is VERY disheartening and makes me wonder if the adage "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" applies to me.
    Any suggestions for apps or specific lesson areas I can look into?

    I was scouted (forced) into our jazz ensemble by our band director. I only realized that all of my skill and practice was useless in front of a piece of sheet music that I never learned how to read. To any beginner in the comments: Learn it. It sucks. It just does. But learn it. It’s hard, but you’ll get used to it. There is no greater feeling than completing a piece, something that becomes extremely difficult with videos or learning by ear. (A synthesia can only get you so far, you are limiting yourself.)

    I have 2 questions. 1, the fingering you showed on the piece made sense until the part where it showed fingering 321, that seems wrong? The other question is you said on sight reading that the first chord was G and that was the key, doesn't the F# make it in the key of D? I am just learning and love all your lessons!!!! Thanks and I'll see you on Monday. Wayne

      The key of G has one sharp (the F#) and the key of D has two sharps, one being the F# and the other being C#. Each key after contains the sharps of the keys before it plus another. So the next key of A would have three sharps, F#, C# and G#

      Cheap and easy way to start is use on on line app to see if you will stick with it. I use Simply Piano by Joytunes. No financial connection to me at all. Just a satisfied customer.

      @@telstar46 I have read other users' reviews on android playstore. Looks like some people are disappointed by the way it works. Once you have subscribed to premium edition; some of the lessons, the app can't pick the notes played by ur piano and hence make the lesson/excise difficult to finish. Is it real worth it??

      Just learn the very basics and find some easy sheet music for songs you like and take it from there. Just like a child learning to read. The more interesting the story, the faster the learning goes.

      I enjoy reading sheet music; I’m not that great, but I’ve gotten to the point at which I can see sheet music and play in my head. It really opens up how music is arranged and why it sounds the way it does. Plus you can quickly write down your ideas without needing a tape or digital recorder.

    Learn to sight read you say? There’s a way to turn the majority of people off learning to play the piano.

    Yeah you just wanna show off non existent skills to people who does not really know much about music and don't have the knowledge to pickup mistakes.
    You are not passionate, you are just a poser.
    Guys we can't stress it enough, start low. Or you will struggle correcting the mistakes you've made when you started by HR6 just to be sure you can impress people when you tell them you play the piano.
