um no i dont think so i hate the human designs, the design also looks nothing like the book. i've seen this trailer before and i was confused when i saw it. honestly i prefer thelma the horse over the unicorn look. and i actually think that donkey is cuter than the unicorn. the studio pretty much copied illumination style, can we please just stop getting the same styles of human looking either illumination or that emoji movie or even disney 3d? this film would look 100% better if they actually got the style correct. i havent seen this book in a long time but uhh i guess now we can say that thelma the unicorn book got a movie.. not watching it

I'm a grown 30 year old man. Our daughter put this on for us all watch together, and I was completely floored by how much this movie caught me off guard and had me laughing. It's incredibly hilarious. Tim Curry's character had me in literal tears

I find the style of this movie interesting on a visual level. Because like, it looks like the regular modern animation style but like, has hints of actual creativity in its design language? Like its being held back from being a bit more unique. Like some of the shaping of the props or the shaping of the characters looks cool and interesting. But then its contrasted with a lot of generic looking stuff.
Exactly how I feel. The writing was great, but the visuals are very conflicting. You have hints of creativity in Thelma and other more curly hairstyles throughout the movie, you have the other donkeys Vic and the horses, you even have the Narwhal the truck driver and the old lady that stood out, but then in scenes like when they're performing or when they're trying to break into the concert you see the characters and it's like, wtf? You're all generic barf in the worst way, and yet those around you look amazing and are booming with character. Not saying they have to be detailed, but they should fit the wacky style the main cast fits in simple ways. A good example is Hotel Transylvania. Even background or less important characters fit the style of the movies. They don't have to stand out, but they do need to fit in.

It makes a lot more sense when you know Lynn Wang (the director) has her origins in online animation, she co-created little cult youtube series like Dogsnack and worked on dick figures etc, she's very much of a certain type of humour and while its been sanded at the egdes in Thelma it's still there. Frankly the film won me with just the Pool boys alone. What obsessed me during the movie is that the world the film is set in just has animals as part of the world as equals, like being dairy cow is a job etc Like the film establishes it's actual paid work and the animals are employed, earn money and spend it. The highlight of which was the boyband at the end which was 3 horses and a guy and the guy was basically performing like a horse which cracked me up.
The pool boys and gemine clement doing a tim curry impression as Nick Diamond Were the best parts of the film for me. I also like the facial expressions and the way they animated expressions in general. It's weird, but fun to introspect

I hate how every western CGI animated movie now looks like they were all made by the same studio. The look the same, move the same, same eyes, same facial animations, same head tilts when characters talking, same stupid jokes and scenes everywhere. As if they're spawned from a bunch of templates. Where did originality go?
none of that feels real. people gussy themselves up to show off incredible talents all the time, get discovered as not the attractive thing they were (or they don't even try they just hide), and then become hated because they're not this sparkling gem the world wanted them to be

TBH they could have pushed the character design even further. It has that illumination vibe because they play it by the character design playbook while keeping it to what is proven to be popular. They could have gone full Courage the Cowardly Dog with this and it would be something of a childhood classic that gives people nightmares years later.

I hate how every western CGI animated movie now looks like they were all made by the same studio. The look the same, move the same, same eyes, same facial animations, same head tilts when characters talking, same stupid jokes and scenes everywhere. As if they're spawned from a bunch of templates. Where did originality go?

none of that feels real. people gussy themselves up to show off incredible talents all the time, get discovered as not the attractive thing they were (or they don't even try they just hide), and then become hated because they're not this sparkling gem the world wanted them to be

Listen, I am just thrilled that it’s not bootleg Disney style again, I’ll take 10,000 weird ugly visual art styles over any more bland ‘pretty’ type styles
TBH they could have pushed the character design even further. It has that illumination vibe because they play it by the character design playbook while keeping it to what is proven to be popular. They could have gone full Courage the Cowardly Dog with this and it would be something of a childhood classic that gives people nightmares years later.
