    Not my area of expertise in engineering (non compressible liquids are fun, compressible gases are scary to me), but I'd hazard a guess and say you're air velocity is too high. You want to increase your volumetric flow rate to get more oxygen, but at the same time you don't want to increase velocity much at all. You're new fan is pushing more air, but without a change in area, it's got to go faster through the pipe. Increase the area (larger pipe size) and you'll get the same volume/time but it doesn't have to move as fast and it might not extinguish your flame.
    That being said, without changing the nozzles in the forge, I'm not sure how you'd get a lower velocity entering the forge, if the nozzles don't change either.
    Maybe it's a pressure thing? Again, gases aren't my thing. I barely had a handle on my fluids class and we only looked at water and oil.

      I think you hit the nail. Going from a 4' pump discharge to a 2 1/2" or 3" steel pipe, he has made his own venturi which is what you said. He has speeded up the air which gives more pressure. Alec, if you have read this far, take off all the iron pipe and use 4' pvc or metal furnace pipe from the blower to the forge. If still too much air, install a 4' slide gate from a dust collection system to regulate the amount of air.

      I think that’s half the solution but combine that with where the gas mixes in the system before an elbow and the pressure produced by that blower may very well be defeating the pressure of the gas. Figure every inch of H2O produced by the blower reduces the gas by the same inch and when only running approx 7” WC, 2” produced by the blower is around 27% gas lost

    Alec,
    My two cents worth: It appears that the piping size is correct since it is what came with the burner. So, calling on my experiences with cooking ovens and industrial boilers, it sure looks to me like your gas pressure is low and cannot overcome the increased static pressure in the piping to the burner. This back pressure is caused by the burner holes themselves and not the piping leading to the burner. A higher pressure blower only makes this worse. Can you increase the gas pressure at the gas regulator to try this theory out?

    • @Finwolven
      @Finwolven 4 года назад +3

      It did really look like the fuel/air mix was way too lean, and natural gas lines aren't really that high pressure, so it could well be the air pressure in the pipe gets high enough to basically shut off most of the gas flow. But also, if it seems the ribbon burner only burns partially, it could also be clogged (which would exacerbate the issue.

    • @cougarten
      @cougarten 4 года назад

      would that mean a bigger pipe with slower air would make it even worse? (fast air = less pressure, right?)

    • @snipeu37
      @snipeu37 4 года назад

      I think this is basically correct. I’m not sure what he would do to fix it without changing the whole piping. He probably needs to find a way to dampen that fan a bit more and see if it gets close.

    • @Taunus-Tim
      @Taunus-Tim 4 года назад

      Finally someone with the correct answer. As an engineer I can assure you, that the problem is the ribbon burner itself. Because natural gas has such a low pressure you have to lower the overall resistance for the airflow. Beginning at the WORST component in terms of resistance. And that is the matrix of the ribbon burner! Enlarge these and you'll get more volume with the right mix. Problem solved!

    You need to add a little of Bernoulli's principle to the forge. When it comes into the forge widen the pipe (7 degrees would be optimal) to slow down the air flow but you will still have the same mass of air. It will allow the air and gas to mix better to give you a better flame.

    The issue with the forge/ new blower might be that the air is moving too fast, and basically blowing the fire out. That would explain the unstable fire, the fire being shot out against the far wall, and also why only half the brick is burning, the gas/air gets pushed out the front before it has a chance to spread out, or potentially the Bernoulli effect creating a vacuum and pulling air in through the other holes.

    • @davidemerulla7355
      @davidemerulla7355 4 года назад +6

      yep, looks like your pipe for the air is too small in diameter and the resulting air velocity is too high. Also the mixing of the gas may be an issue like if the stream gas doesn't have the time to mix with the air properly. To increase mixing you may stick something in the pipe to create turbulence , some sort of blade/propeller. Good Luck

    • @klausklaus5618
      @klausklaus5618 4 года назад

      That was my first thought too, that the gas mix is moving out faster than the flame front. But I don't know enough about these things to say for sure

    • @jamesodonnell8290
      @jamesodonnell8290 4 года назад

      @consistency 14 why are you mad? He's struggling with a fluid dynamics/ chemical reaction problem. Given the relatively high velocity of air/gas, and the relatively low pressure, it's very possible that the Bernoulli principle is causing some of the issues, especially when he said it's not how he expected it to look, which means that something unintuitive is going on. If you think I'm showing off by saying "Bernoulli principle", that's not the case, I'm using the name of a phenomenon to reference that very important but sometimes counter-intuitive phenomenon.

    Is it possible that at your altitude, an oxygen separator feeding into the intake of the fan would be more useful than increasing the overall volume of air getting in...at least beyond a certain point? Recognising of course that at the moment sourcing an oxygen separator for a non-medical purpose might not be the most prudent...

    Beautiful dog. Very impressive on how you go about and make the tools you need instead of going on line and buying them. They mean much more to you knowing that you made them with your own hands. I know how that feels because when I was in school as a lad I made a tack hammer and punch in shop class (almost 50 yrs ago) and still have and use them in my workshop. Stay safe!
