  • Episode 38 - You know those moments in life where you just stop and think, How did I even get here? In this episode, Jason and I dive into some of our most surreal “pinch me” experiences. Both of us share a few of our celebrity encounters, (and the one time Jason spent the day with a star from The Office), and where one famous comedian even asked him for a bag of cocaine.
And then there’s me-of course, I take a turn down memory lane for a few of my “I can’t believe I’m here" moments, a couple being the birth stories of our two kids. There’s laughter, there’s chaos, and yes, there’s some oversharing. Because what’s a podcast without a little too much information, right?
Whether it’s brushing shoulders with fame or bringing tiny humans into the world, we’re unpacking those once-in-a-lifetime moments that shape our lives and make for some really great stories. Join us for the ride-it’s equal parts hilarious, heartfelt, and a little bit messy. Just like us!
Listen now and let us know your own “I can’t believe I’m here” stories. You might just make it into a future episode!

I met Sally Fallon! My hero!
Two years ago, I was eating a total SAD diet. We unfortunately lost a baby at 20 weeks and, as a way of coping, I started listening to podcasts. Which led to health and nutrition podcasts. Which led to me stumbling on Nourishing Traditions. Which led to me feverishly learning how to cook from scratch and healing my family through nourishing foods. Which led me to a whole new life that I LOVE. Even another baby after loss and infertility.
I found out Sally Fallon's farm was two hours from me. I dragged four of my friends with me on a farm tour. I had NO expectations of even SEEING Sally. But we pulled up and found out she was leading the TOUR. I got to walk and talk about raw milk with the woman who wrote the book that changed my life. I even had the baby with me I'd had since our loss and Sally smiled at her and asked if she was a Weston A Price baby ❤️ I couldn't believe I was THERE walking along a dirt road next to my hero 🤩

Oh my goodness. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who does that! I'm from central New York State and I tend to mimick accents to people I'm talking with too. I've done that with people from England and people from the south. I'm always afraid that they're going to think I'm mocking them but honestly it just comes out without me thinking about it. I feel so much better I'm not alone. Lol.

Y'all I have laughed so hard at Jason in this episode!!!
He is yelling my thoughts out loud!!!
But seriously even with all the flaws, we are truly blessed in our country.
When I hear some people say they were "traumatized" by certain things, all I can think about is the things I saw when I was on a mission trip to Haiti. Those people would be appalled by the things some people claim as trauma.

I felt like such a failure after having 3 c-sections when I planned to have my version of the "beeswax waterbirth" experience! Then when other crunchy moms insinuated I did something wrong to end up there realllllly added to it. You should totally do a birth story podcast. I think you would be surprised how many crunchy moms had birth disappointment!

    • @MamaSamanthaS

I relate to this so much! I had 3 c sections after having a home water birth with my first. It’s been a long journey of letting go of the guilt and failure I felt about them. But if anybody makes you feel lesser for reasons or choices for birth or parenting they are not worth your time and will not be a good influence in your life. You are in no way lesser of a mom because of the way you gave birth, you are a superhero!

I maintain that having a 'birth plan' is a bad idea, it can lead to so much disappointment and feelings of failure when things don't go according to the plan. Have a 'wish list' by all means but honestly the goal should be for both of you to get through the process safely. Be grateful if you achieve that 😘👍🏽

I had an “emergency csection” with my first. Pushed for two hours, then the doctor FINALLY came in, saw baby was sunny side up and said, time for a C-section. I could feel every bit of the csection and eventually blacked out. Came to with a strange nurse holding my boob saying “feed the baby!” 😂😩
I mourned my vaginal birth for a long time that I didn’t get to have, and I finally realized that was ok! I’ve gone on to have five more natural births, the most recent was my homebirth with twins. It was great! So it is ok to be sad if a birth didn’t go as planned. And I’m with Jason, those births do not define us or our babies. ❤

I met Lance Guest, star of my favorite childhood movie, "The Last Starfighter" when I was 12 (38 years ago). His mom lived right behind my aunt and uncle's house. They were hosting Christmas one year and my cousins wanted to run over to Mrs. Guest's house to hang out with his nephew who was good friends with my cousins. My cousin, who I assume had met him a few times, ran over to him and said, "my cousin Brian is a big fan!" while he was talking with Mrs. Guest. He walked over, shook my hand as said, "Hi". I was completely starstruck, unable to mutter anything except to reply, "Hi." After standing there awkwardly for a couple of seconds he said, "well, I'm going to go back to talking with my mom, thanks for being a fan." It will always be one of my favorite moments.

My husband met Richard Lewis about 10 years ago in an elevator in a hotel in San Francisco. He told me he just said 'hello' to him and that he loved his movies.
Robin Hood:Men in Tights is one of my all-time favorite movies. I was so disappointed that my husband didna't look at him and say, "I beg your pardon, your Highness...but wasn't your mole...on the other cheek?" What a waste. 😂😂😂

While in high school I met James Dewar, the inventor of the twinkie. He showed me his scrapbooks (way cool- twinkies were 2 for a nickel) and he told me they were originally 2 slices of real pound cake (made with butter) with whipped cream in the middle. He also told me how he came up with the name. Of course, this was way before cell phones and I didn't get any photos.

Ugh, I really feel you on the birth stories! I have 3 kids. 16 and 15 year old boys and a 5 year old girl. All three births were definitely NOT what I wanted. First one, went into labor naturally (the only one) but ended up getting an epidural...which stalled my labor, and eventually he had to be vacuumed out. Second I was about a week late induced, no epidural came much quicker, but with constant cervical checks, I developed sepsis and was in the hospital for 10 days. My third I was induced because of too much amniotic fluid. On the morning of the induction I fell on ice and had to go for monitoring for like 3 hours. Got the induction, and it failed for about 10 hours. My OB came in and "accidentally" broke my water. I think she did it on purpose, then left for the night. I started laboring but it was all back labor... so it wasn't helping me dilate. I stayed at 4cm for 8 hours, until I finally gave into the epidural. I got some rest and started dilating quickly. I wasn't quite there, but the OB that I hated in the network made me push anyway. He kept yelling at me because I couldn't feel the contractions at all. After 3 hours of that, he ordered an emergency c section. I don't remember my daughter being born and I couldn't hold her for a few hours because they had to put me under. I was devastated. My plan was to naturally go through labor and delivery. Just goes to show you all the preparation in the world can't dictate how your birth will go. You just have to roll with it.

I had an OB with my first that also yelled at me during labor that I wasn’t pushing hard enough and if I didn’t try harder I’d need a c-section. I got the c-section after 3 hours of that.

I was a server in a nice restaurant in my area. I've met Christina Ricci, Pierce brosnan, Jason segal and Jamie hyneman from myth busters. when I lived in Seattle, I worked in an office building with this guy Jason, from the bachelor. I guess the show was airing and it was a big deal. I never saw it or cared, but he was on magazine covers and the happenings of the show were notable for pop culture at the time. Around the same time, I was friends and neighbor with the sister of the two brothers that were on "The deadliest catch" with their dad (her step dad). That show was pretty big. .

I was diagnosed with DVT (a large blood clot in my femoral vein) at 30 weeks pregnant with twins. So I was immediately put on large daily doses of blood thinners. At 33 weeks, I went into preterm labor and began dilating, so we were admitted to L&D. Expecting labor to progress, they stopped my blood thinner. But labor stopped. After 24 hours without contractions, we were sent home. Later that day, I started having preterm labor contractions again. And they HURT. We went back to the hospital. I was dilating more. They realized my blood was coagulating too quickly, so we needed to deliver so I could go back on the blood thinner. I really didn't want a c-section, so my OB broke my waters to speed things along. Also, one of the twins was breech, so they suggested an epidural - my OB could reach in and pull out Twin B after Twin A delivered. And then they were whisked away to NICU...
We hoped for a later delivery so they could come home with us. Instead, we spent the next month essentially living at the hospital to be with them.

Me covering my eyes and shaking my head knowing how many woman would hear Emily’s birth story and wished they were that lucky.
There is no comparing to what is worst, but not living up to a crunchy standard should not be a lie that brings lovely women down into disappointment. That just saddened me so much to hear. I hope so many women can find healing in knowing the truths behind our birth stories (ie. so much is out of our hands, we can do all the right things and still things can go “wrong”, we’re all trying to do our best and that’s good enough, etc.)
Women are amazing because of how we mother. Not because how we managed to get our child safely out of our bodies. Bless all of you who struggle with the outcome of your birth story 💜

Traveling to Europe during covid with very few people at the airport I was waiting 2 hours for a connecting flight. I saw a guy at a table(only 3 tables in the entire dining area were occupied) who looked familiar. Noticed another passenger come up to him and they exchanged a few words and laughed. So when it was time for me to meander on to my gate, I decided to say hi to this familiar looking guy. I said as much to him and he says I was on ...... TV show. I replied I haven't owned a TV in 18 years, but maybe I'd seen him on RUclips. He says you may have seen me as Obama's anger translator! That was it! I told yep and it was super funny. Turned out Micheal Keegan Key was on his way to do a show in the country I was flying to on the next leg of my journey. I wished him a pleasant trip and didn't see him again... because I was in economy and he was not! 😊

Such a similar birth story with our baby! I studied all the things, read all the natural birth books, was pretty healthy, and had basically decided I would never get induced and certainly not get an epidural….(personal choice). And at 40 weeks had to get induced because of possible preeclampsia…. (And I did get an epidural at the end of a 70 hour labor) then my baby had to be in NICU for the first week.
    I certainly did think…. What did I do wrong? I can’t believe I’m here!!
But at the end of it all I have an adorable healthy baby boy and we are all doing great!!
God is in control! Personally I think I was too dependent on my knowledge… I think I felt like nothing could possibly go wrong! I certainly wasn’t trusting God as much as I should have!
I would love to have a much different story for my next birth, but at the end of the day if it all happened the same I would do it again to have a sweet baby!!!

We got to watch him run a short distance, being chased by a bad guy. I got their autographs and I was surprised to realize how short “Kannnn!!!!” was. I was an awkwardly tall 5’8” and he was the same or maybe shorter than I! Amazing what is done to make leading men seem taller than they are!

I met Jeff Goldbloom in the lobby of the hotel I worked at (I worked at the in-hotel Starbucks). I was riding the elevator up to the lobby after closing down the Starbucks for the night with my 18 year old manager (I was 20 at the time). We were talking about how Jeff Goldbloom was supposedly staying at the hotel for the Jazz festival going on... and my manager was so Gen Z that she didn't know who he was and said " oh, is that they guy from Ghostbusters?" and I had to explain he was in Jurrasic Park. I finished explaining it to her as the doors opened to the lobby and we saw him just standing there! He came over and talked with us for a few minutes about my manager's ghost tattoo on her arm just above her elbow (reminder- he was not in Ghostbusters XD). And then we walked away to drop off our cash deposit in the office, I was in shock that that actually happened and she simply said "he was soooo high"
    truly an unreal experience XD
PS- I feel you on the birth story side of things. My son ended up being an induction as well (no amniotic fluid left at 40 weeks). It was a traumatic birth (other complications). Thanks for sharing this- still a new mom and hearing that not every birth is natural and perfect is very comforting! God bless you both!
