velocity measurement by float method

The determination of discharge in the river; we have to calculate the velocity and the area of the cross section of the river
Measurement of velocity in done by various ways like float method, current-meter method, etc.
here the description of float method is given,

procedure;
-Select length such that it is at least 4 times the width of river
-release the tennis ball at the center position of the section 1-1
-* measure the time taken by the ball to reach the section 2-2
take average time tav
* average velocity Vav = (L/ tav)*k where k= factor taken as 0.85-0.90; usually 0.85 for safety
