Been following you guys for a few months and really enjoy the podcast. I have learned much. Several years ago I flew to Cuenca from my home in Colorado for dental work. I rented a condo for a month and became friends with Juan Perez who managed the condo while the owners were away. Six months later I returned to complete the dental work. I stayed another month in Cuenca. On weekends Juan drove me all over Ecuador to show off his amazing country. On one weekend he, his wife and son invited me to see Vilcabamba. On the way we stopped at a restaurant in Loja and ate burro. It was delicious! In Vilcabamba we walked the streets, checked out the shops, ate amazing food, and enjoyed an outdoor festival in front of the church. To make a long story short, I fell in love with Ecuador. MY QUESTION IS: How can I convince my wife to visit Ecuador, and especially Vilcabamba, for a month or so? My second option is to take my son with me. He is single, works remotely from his apartment in Denver, and is a part-time author.
P.S. if I had my way I would sell my house and move to Ecuador today. Thanks for the great service you guys are providing. Mark Kaat

Would you mind telling us, would you describe the overall quality of your experience, and the cost of doing your dental work there? I’d really appreciate your thoughts on that…
I live in the U.S., and I’m interested to follow your footsteps about the dental work, and enjoying the visit.

Point by point - Audio levels mostly ok. Multi camera, a great idea. You all know the secret, just be your true selves. Loja a great city, an hour away, big enough and near enough. I say Ecuador is a renter's market, in spite of youz being RE guys. Especially at my age. Inoculation? I returned to Ecuador this spring past, for three months. Down and back NO questions about inoculation. Nobody asked. No mask requirement in about eight flight legs. A non issue. The foil hat is a joke in Vilcabamba. The free energy lizard people aficionados are a tiny vocal minority. Entertaining, up to a point. Not a big deal. Ecuador not for everyone? True. In my experience over half don't last seven years. Obviously, we individually adapt to Ecuador....Ecuador doesn't change for us. But....many folks will not or can not adapt. Fearful in Ecuador? Fear is between our ears. We carry it with us. Be aware, be cautious, use common sense - knowledge will replace fear. Ecuadorians and their government are welcoming and friendly, really. Saraguro, nice little town...funny hats and great cheese! Malacatos is fine, more & more expats locating there. Cost of living in Ecuador....a quarter to a fifth. Food, rent, medical. This from my experience of 13 years in Cuenca and Vilcabamba. Obviously not talking about "Sugar coated sugar pops" imported from the states and $10 a box. Want sugar...chew cane. Izhcayluma resort is very well run and served by a shuttle from Cuenca (or it was). Vilcabamba is blessed with a real French Bakery. To buy a fresh baguette baked by a real French or Belgian degreed baker, incredible !. Ice cream? I remember five shops in Vilcabamba. I remember Videna, a beautiful Spaniard from the Canary Islands, she worked in one of them. She might have stepped out of a painting by El Greco. She had that look.

In answer to security and safety, I have never had to worry. I have never had to lock my doors, lock my car, own a gun, be fearful for my safety, Have a dog for security, or even have a security system. I grew up in a town the size of Vilcabamba until I was 22. Since then I have lived in suburbs and University cities with average populations of 60,000 - 150,000 and have never had to take these security precautions. I guess when I move I would have to learn to use them. I'm almost 60 and have never even been pickpocketed.

Brandon- thanks for your answer on GMOs/Bioengineered foods in the US. Do most of the processed foods in the stores contain GMOs/bioengineered foods?
    Follow-up question:
Are many pesticides used on produce in Vilcabamba or in the rest of Ecuador?
Thank you so much for answering so many of these questions today! These were exactly some of the questions I had!

Thanks for watching Erica! Unfortunately many, if not most, processed foods anywhere in the world contain some level of GMO ingredients.
Pesticides are used in regions throughout Ecuador. That said, there are many available chemical free options in the Vilcabamba area. We even have a weekly organic market where the farmers are subject to surprise audits of their farming practices!

another option would be to read e-books. Amazon and other places offer them. You can set up a Tablet/Kindle/Reader to make reading them easy on the eyes. So if traveling, this is an excellent option as books take up space and weight that can be used for other more necessary items.

Jesse, great interview you conducted with Peter, founder of Izhcayluma and one of the first gringos to arrive in the Valley. His story of hiring a wheelbarrow and a guy with a shotgun to carry his purchase funds across the Town Square from his bank to the sellers bank because the two banks didn't cooperate with each other was priceless.
One comment that stood out was Peter's mention that the Correa years were the golden age for Ecuador. 12 years with the same president who invested heavily in hospitals, education, infrastructure--- and a stable currency (the US Dollar) allowed the country to grow into the second world country that it is today. Regardless of one's current political affiliation, most would agree with that assessment of history. Unfortunately that was then and this is today. Ecuador seems to have fallen back into the pattern of presidential leadership that rarely lasts over two years, usually after one scandal or another has surfaced. The desire to control the coastal port operations by international drug cartels adds another factor to the political matrix that was not present in the pre-Correa era. Organizations like the Sinola Cartel have more wealth and firepower than the entire Ecuadorian military, and any political leader, even the son of the richest family, ignores them at their own risk.
And finally, the US Dollar is no longer the powerful, universal hegemonic currency that the entire World used for all international trade. It is instead a currency being abandoned as rapidly as possible by nearly half the world. The US is functionally bankrupt, having rushed into indebtedness at a rate only seen before by banana republics like Equator in its pre-Correa days or Wiemar Republics in their last days before collapse. The US has added 2.6 TRILLION dollars to its national debt in only the past SIX MONTHS! That amounts to $100,000 for every citizen! The interest liability alone on the national debt is over a TRILLION $ per year. (as long as interest rates don't go up more) It has initiated/joined two major wars and is poised to provoke a third, adding another trillion to its Defense Department laundry machine.
Debts that cannot be paid will not be paid. They can only be defaulted and wiped out by total collapse or inflated away into total worthlessness.
As one of the few countries wedded at the hip to the fraudulent US Dollar, Ecuador will face the political and financially difficult process of divorce and learning to stand on its own at some time in the not too distant future.

A quick update on current travel to Ecuador. United Airlines has scrubbed all flights to Quito and removed them from their schedule. (that was a 9 hr flight!) I don't know how permanent that will be. My best alternative from the Pacific Northwest involves flying a commuter to LA, sitting around for 6 hrs., flying another commuter sized plane to Panama,. and sitting around for another six hours before finally flying to Quito on an older Boeing. Or crisscross North America on American before finally leaving from Miami. 23+ hrs in transit either way.
I can fly half way around the world over the pole to Frankfurt and then deep into Eastern Europe to visit an old friend in Montenegro with less stress. Or go half way around the other way to Bali. So Vilcabamba really is the end of the World!

Hey guys, been watching your channel for awhile now; really enjoy your content; thank you.
My name is David, I am 48 years old from the SF bay area, and I have not been to Ecuador yet, but I'm looking intently at Vilcabamba for a variety of reasons.
I intend on doing a lot of work/healing around my chronic health issues, and want to be in a place where I have a lot of alternative therapies/practitioners to choose from.
I also want to live someplace where the rent is economically viable, but also a place that is muy tranquilo.
Having solitude/quiet/nature around me is super important , while also hopefully living a short enough distance where I could walk to regular gatherings for meditation, song, dance, language learning, other social groups, etc...as a strong community life is also something very important to me.
Anyway, I am wondering if you feel I can accomplish this.
In addition, I would be interested in finding out the best way of going about obtaining a temporary residency in Ecuador. Because if I am doing well being there, I want the option to not have to leave after 6 months. ( I have just enough in savings to qualify).
So I am wondering, would it be best if I begin initiating the process for temp residency from CA 1st, and what would I need to do? Or would it be better you think if I just wait until I am in Vilcabamba to do all this?
    Many Thanks!

I have gotten an increased amount of dirty, hostile looks, bad Vibes thrown at me, and nasty comments. I live close to u.s. border so it's very convenient to drive there and load up on organic produce etc. The MX peso has gotten stronger and u.s. dollar weaker. The conspiracies are there as a distraction, this reality creates the rabbit hole as you continue down it, time isn't linear, this reality can change as you are experiencing it and it can be completely different for two people living in the same time period in the same area even it is all perspective. If you are mentally exploritory and skeptical and able to think for themselves rather than thinking what they are told.

What's better Cotacachi or Vilacabamba. The housing ''for sale'' is way better in Cotacachi. You can get a mansion in Cotacachi for under $180k. Does that say anything about who's better?

    • @AbundantLivingEcuador

That is completely up to the opinion of the individual. We have chosen the south, Vilcabamba, for many reasons and much prefer it, but I'd recommend spending some time in both places and see what you think

I don’t think y’all are aware of this but this is the truth, the actually pyramid on the dollar bill is from a ancient actual pyramid which was found in the cave in your country and if I’m not mistaken this was taken to Europe by a Jewish guy that was a researcher. This is a fact. I felt I shld inform y’all because I don’t know about that country constitution so when y’all said it’s very similar to America that would make a lot of sense. Great vid

    My question?
Is there snow ❄ skiing and ice-skating in the Andes ?
    Its a love of mine..

    • @AbundantLivingEcuador
      @AbundantLivingEcuador  Год назад

There is snow in Andes and in some parts of Ecuador. However, skiing opportunities in Ecuador are limited to ski ascents of our 4 highest peaks, which are all volcanoes, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Cayambe. These are the only peaks in Ecuador with significant snow. Definitely not among the best skiing areas of the world. There’s also an ice skating club in Quito!

What kind of job opportunities are there for teenagers? One concern of ours is making this move just as our kids are getting to the age of launching on their own and not doing it sooner so they could better assimilate. We have kids age 16 down to 10 and I'm wondering how difficult or easy it would be for them to find jobs or careers that would help them stay in Ecuador with us. Thank you!

    • @hermanodejesus7264
      @hermanodejesus7264 10 месяцев назад +2

Tough one ..... if your kids hope to find a job it will be good to have a contact, someone that owns a hotel, restaurant or something like that.
It's difficult for teens to work in Ecuador not only due to the lack of opportunities but to the local mentality. Thing is only families in need demand or expect their kids to work. It's a shame but well over 95% of kids ages 17 or less have never worked in their lives at all, zero, NIL, nada.
Best thing would be to come up with ideas to supply a need in the area. Entrepreneurship is key. There's a need for ESL all over the world. You could make deals with other families to allow their kids to learn/practice English with yours while hanging out or doing the lawn, etc. Your kids will learn Spanish in a twinkling of an eye so no need to worry about a 50/50 deal.
As far as finding a career I would say it all depends. It basically boils down to who you know. Also higher education seems to be a thing, not my thing but there you have it.
      Blessings,
      H

My question to you gentlemen, is there grafted mango varieties available there such as Sweet Tart, M-4, Orange Sherbet, Nam Doc Mi, etc. as well as Grafted Jack Fruits in Vilcabamba or the surrounding areas? I am also in growing different types of nutritious plants such a moringa, Katuk, ground spinaches such as Sisso, Chinese, Okinawan and Malabar as well. Do you know of any nurseries that would have such stuff or provide me with contacts? Thanks for your time, BTW, love the content gentlemen.
