The relationship between community and safety that was touched upon in the later section of your podcast should not be forgotten. I lived in a mountain region of Colombia while in the Peace Corps 45 years ago. An agricultural and climatic region similar to that of Vilcabamba. The Violencia that had claimed a quarter million lives was not far in the past but the cartel era had not yet arrived. One side of the valley was Conservator and the other Liberale and there still was armed conflict between them and the federal armies. The State Dept. rated it as one of the most dangerous places in the world.
When I wanted to take a trip into the mountains on my riding mule Jay, I always talked about my plans with my friends over a tinto and while playing billiards so that the entire community knew about it. More than once I received a knock on the door at night --- (from somebody of either political persuasion) advising me to not go to a particular place at that time.
After returning to the US I lived in San Francisco and worked in a small office just off Market Square. I never walked out of the office without turning on the eyes in the back of my head. Never felt as safe as I did in Colombia, because I was alone on the street instead of surrounded by my community. And this was back in the days when San Francisco was the shining city on a hill instead of the homeless nightmare that it has become.

      Hi Richard,
Thank you so much for sharing your insightful comment. Your perspective and personal experiences are truly valuable, and we appreciate you taking the time to contribute to the discussion.
It's fascinating to hear about your time in Colombia and the unique dynamics of the community you lived in. The relationship between community and safety is indeed crucial, and your story highlights the importance of open communication and mutual support within a community.
Your mention of feeling safer in Colombia, despite the conflicts and challenges, compared to your experience in San Francisco is thought-provoking. It's interesting how the sense of belonging and being surrounded by a supportive community can have a significant impact on one's perception of safety.
Once again, we sincerely thank you for sharing your perspective. It's contributions like yours that enrich the conversation and broaden our understanding. If you have any more insights or stories to share, we would love to hear them.

This was going to happen, but have to wait for saying it in the appropiate time. it is very sad the growing of crimes in Ecuador, but most gringos do not know that Ecuador has thousands and thousands of members spreaded in several gangs. Los Choneros ( 12k people ) was born in Manabi, same region as Manta. Lobos ( 8k people ) is an "new" branch separated from Los Choneros. Los Tiguerones ( 4k ) another big gang from Esmeralda. I do not know how Ecuador - a very peaceful country about 20 years ago - ended this way . It is clear that bad prepared police + corrupted politicians drive the country to a mad situation. I hope the next president do his job, even though it is going to be a hard-to-fight battle . They need a lot of money , a lot of support from foreign countries and be united. A united Peru had a fight against something 100+ more dangerous in the 80's and 90's Shining Path and MRTA both trying to take over our country. After 70k died, we won this war. I lost my elder brother in that war as member of the police. We never ever surrender and we thanks US that helped us in this bad situation. Peru is now a booming economy, with a hardworker and growing middle class. It was not a bad idea to have a "Plan B" as visiting Cajamarca and Chachapoyas both seen to be the "Loja version of Peru" . Posibility to get there from Loja by land. The beautiful permanent deep blue sky will amaze you

Whether or not you all want to admit it, Ecuador is getting bad. No one should have to fear walking at night, and right now, there is no safety at night. The local taxi driver might be in on you getting robbed with his crew. While that can happen anywhere, it’s extremely rare in places like Europe and SE Asia.
Ecuador has a very clear caste system with rich va poor, and the poor are getting angry, and they often lump expats in with those keeping them poor.
The US is not much different, and both Ecuador and the US are rated really low on safety.

Well... I understand how people wants to emigrate to a place like Vilcabamba and try to grab some of that "magic" for themselves, but if you think about it, today it is the perfect spot for crime. A poor comunity known for being special and "left alone" by ecuadorians, now is getting a ton of wealthy caucasians, a lot of unruled hippies, unwanted development, rise of living costs, its catching unwanted eyes... the Vilcabamba locals are not happy about it. I really doubdt Vilcabamba locals have rapists, murderers and violent thieves, they have always been a small comunity that knew each other very well.
The more people from outside goes to Vilcabamba that wants to have a "little USA" there, the more crime it will get. I know for a fact that colombian mafias hit some places in Ecuador and then get back to the border, i dare to say most of violent crime perpetrated at gunpoint is from these types of colombian squads, sometimes people from the northern coast of Ecuador too, so expecting Police to catch anyone is very unlikely, they are ex militia or military trained. Probably they bribe some taxi drivers to get info.
Unfortunatelly, crime is raising everywhere, in Spain the amount of murders, disapeared people, thefts, etc, are non stop on TV. I just lost more than 9k in cash, paying for a renovation at home, and not only lost the money, now my house is like a warzone, no doors, no floor, no kitchen... And contractoed spanish people to be "safer", oh well...
Take care, post pandemic life is wild now.

I’m an Ecuadorian living in New York City, Staten Island and I’m terrified to go to any place by public transportation , every day there is an assault or someone pushes you on the train tracks. You’re followed from the subway and rape. They are finding people dead in their apartments. The violence is escalated to the point that is very scary to go out. Now my family is in Manta and I’ll be going to visit my mom in June but I’m certainly worried about the crime in manta and Manabi in general. It feels that there not safe place anywhere in world right now. I’ve never been to Vilcabamba and watching your videos really pick my interest, maybe I’ll go this time. New York City was rated one of the safest metropolitan cities between 1994 and 2001. This was the result of hundreds of mafia crime prosecutions by Republican Rudy Giuliani, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Then as Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani he enacted policies (e.g. Stop and Frisk) that made it difficult to be a criminal. In 2002, Democratic Mayors (Michael Bloomberg, Bill de Blasio, Eric Adams) reversed those policies and crime soared. Then Democratic District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced he would no longer prosecute certain crimes (Theft, Robbery, etc.) or hold criminals (i.e. Cash Bail Reform) in jail. That is the difference between electing Republicans and Democrats. The stupid people (Democrat voters) did it to themselves.

Hello, I did my student teaching at Conklin Elementary in Rockford many years ago! Thank you for this video. I am so sorry to hear about what happened to this family. I grew up outside of Chicago. I lived in Chicago in the past and have felt safe in my neighborhood. I teach in the south suburbs and have for several years. I now live in Indiana because the south suburbs are not safe. I am a bilingual teacher and love the families I've worked with. This past year was the 1st year I did not feel safe. I can't explain it but children have brought guns to school, there was a teacher that was shot by a 6 year old. It's frightening. The south side of Chicago is notoriously violent but anyway I've been wanting to teach overseas. I've looked at Cuenca, Ecuador. Being from a large city I think it's engrained that you are aware of your surroundings and take safety measures. I hope that the violence gets under control. Being a teacher I don't have anything to flash, lol. Thanks again for this video.

I did a deep dive on the story when I considered a migration. Here is my take on the situation:
    1. It would seem the family members were not armed (Ecuador prohibited gun ownership)
    - In April, President Guillermo Lasso announced that civilians in Ecuador would again be allowed to possess guns.
    2. It would seem the family members were caught unaware by the 3-4 criminals.
    - To prevent that, I would recommend a eMACROS 1-2 Mile Long Range Solar Wireless Driveway Alarm. With that product, you'll know when the criminals enter your property.
    3. The victim posted to Quora that her neighbor was the victim of home invasion/robbery, and she expressed deep concerns for her safety in the Loja area.
    - A woman should never ignore her intuition. Take action to arm yourself and secure your property.

Post: What are the major stereotypes people have about Ecuador and to what extent are they true?
Quote: Another stereotype was that we were at a high risk of home invasion robberies. We have not experienced this as of yet, but live in constant awareness of this danger. I know many, many foreigners who have experienced home invasion robberies and I would not have come here if I had any idea of how close to home such attacks would be. My heart goes out to that family amd i cannot imagine what they are all going through....
It is so important to advise any potential people thinking of relocating to Ecuador the rising crime level in the country as well as the very unstable political amd security situation that has been developing for a number of years...
I always maintained that it was only a matter of time that this happens in an area with a large number of expats due to the cultural myth that all expats are wealthy and therefore make good and easy targets for robbery.
Ecuador has always had unsafe areas that i have been in the past and fortunately have had no problems.
However i have never known a time previous in my 21 years of both visiting or living in Ecuador where it has been so dangerous as now...
I have many family and friends there and we were planning on moving back there last year but literally everyone has advised us against it and so reluctantly we have shelved those plans for now.
There is still much that Ecuador has to offer and im sure for the right people it still does now. But its only fair to tell both sides of the story so that people can make informed decisions rather than make a bad one they regret later.
It really does make me sad to see this because the country really has improved so much over the years and communities in Vilcabamba amongst others have worked so hard to build themselves into thriving places for like-minded people.

But that is because it is located on a small plateau with deep canyons on each side. The volcano I skied on (three days muleback away from town) blew its top and killed 23,000 people. But the campesino market town I knew is now a hotbed of environmental activism that succeeded in stopping an open leach pit gold mine backed by the biggest gold mining company in the world. The issue for expats is that you can’t legally defend yourself. If you shoot Ecuadorians trying to kill you, you still go to jail. It appears, based on my research, expats don’t legally matter as much as local criminals. And local criminals have small consequences for these actions. Not to mention, many local police don’t do their jobs. When a woman and her friends were kidnapped a while back, when they escaped and went to police, they said their shift was ending soon and to wait for the next shift. Many hours later and still no help for these expats.

Okay Guys, exactly where do you live. You all are so North American, so I am guessing you live in an expat community. My first rule in moving anywhere in Ecuador was to move where only Spanish was spoken. For the last eleven years, after 68 years in the U.S., I have lived in one of the most popular tourist towns in northern Ecuador. My townhouse is on the main intersection and I rarely lock my door., except at night. I left the U.S. behind. I chose to live in center city. I live within two blocks of anything necessary for life. I can walk the streets day or night and never feel unsafe. My neighbors are like family. In the U.S. I was on call 24/7 for twenty years and I rarely saw my neighbors while living in an upscale community within a walk to the beach. I have traveled the World, solo, and lived in many places and never had one problem. Let's face it, Quito and Guayaquil are another New York City. Many expats move into expat communities and seem to feel they need a wall around them. That wall tells anyone who needs money, that you must have something important that you want to keep safe. And, quite honestly, I avoid expats as they complain a lot. French expats are much nicer than U.S. expats. My main advice to incoming expats is that when they get off the plane in Ecuador, it is just like landing on Mars. Anyone coming here should have spent time reading the Ecuadorian newspapers and watching Ecuadorian television. Our town has cameras up and down the streets and we now have a security warning system in most stores where all they have to do is push a button for an immediate sound outside. We just do not have the problems a lot of Ecuador is starting to experience and a lot has started with the large amount of Venezuelans. People need to do some research and prepare for changes in their lives. I had planned to retire to Italy and yet here I am. Safe and sound in Ecuador, where I found the nicest people in the World. I did not come here to lie in a community of U.S. expats. What purpose would that serve. As you said sir, this is a different place to live. I have not one complaint. My advice would be, if you think you might want to move to Ecuador, at least 6 months before a visit, starting reading El Comercio and El Universo and learn at least a little Spanish. Greet everyone you meet on the street and smile. And take time to visit different areas of Ecuador before you settle. And make native, both indigenous and indigenous friends, as once they realize you are serious about becoming Ecuadorian, they adopt you. You appreciate them especially in times of protest. All of a sudden you are one with Ecuador and no longer think like a North American.

Thank you for the video and sorry to hear of the tragedy! Question, we are planning to move to the area, and wondering as someone with very limited Spanish, if something like a home invasion were to happen, is there a number like 911 that can be called and do the police come to help? Also, do you know, if an intruder were to be shot by the home owner, is the home owner going to be jammed up by the police for shooting the bad guy?

    • @AbundantLivingEcuador

Hi Kathy, yes, the police in fact have an easy way to register your domicile with them so that you can just press a button on your phone and they automatically come to your house, no phone call necessary. The self defense laws are a hot button debate, one that we all hope will change to make self defense better protected under the law.

Thanks so much for sharing and, so sorry to hear this - again...heard it from others in the area yesterday...it's NOT ok...anyone know the nationality of the perpetrators??
A LOT could be said about this ...as always when things like this happen...and, one very positive thing to all of you from Dublin today: You have what many Europeans clearly do not have: Your community!!!
Europeans mostly just walk away from crimes...don't want to be involved, don't care about anyone but themselves which I find more than sad and, one of the main reasons I stopped travel mainland Europe years ago..
Yes, I know Ecuador is not safe everywhere....neither is Europe..."leaders" of my continent are just more experienced in hiding/covering up etc..
The countries in which I have had things destroyed, been robbed etc happen to be the old places, selling themselves as "the happiest in the world" but doesn't seem to care about communities at all - only about themselves...and my question to these places is: "Is this what you call happiness?" Really Europe???
My plans of moving to Ecuador for my retirement is still very, very real and yes, I know very well Ecuador isn't paradise...NO country is..
Ecuador however, do have her communities and, the people get along and help each other. In other words...dear Carl. ..the European police is NOT always ok... corruption is sky-high here.. .so yes, community!!! Ecuador is at least as good as Europe...crimes might be different but not less...far from...
Be careful about your communities...it pays off and yes, a dog, an iguana and alarm systems..to protect myself as well as the things the Danes have already stolen..hence, to protect the person I. Not a gun...I would not be secure with such one..but yes, close community living to good good people...
Thanks a lot for sharing, take care, enjoy your weekend and please, keep on being the people you are 💕💓💕

My dream has been to buy a small finca, where I could have a few animals, chickens, and a garden. I've been planning on bringing my treasures - furniture, some antiques, and other "things" that I realize now may give the illusion to some, of perceived wealth. As a single, older woman I never had concerns about my safety. I am now thinking I may have to give up my dream of a little farm and the freedom to live a happy healthy life. This horrendous murder and the general increase in crime in my beloved Sierra are just heartbreaking... Since I refuse to even consider living in a gated community, I'm now reconsidering all of my plans. My prayers go out to the family and friends of the murdered woman and the community.

Hey Diana! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. It's amazing that you've been planning for the past six years to make the move to Vilcabamba. Your dream of owning a small finca with animals, chickens, and a garden sounds absolutely wonderful!
We understand that recent events, such as the horrendous murder and the increase in crime, have caused you to reconsider your plans and think about your safety. We want to assure you that your concerns are valid, and your well-being is of utmost importance.
While living in a gated community is one option, we completely respect your preference for a different lifestyle. Rest assured, there are ways to keep your property safe and enhance your security. For instance, having a guard dog, installing a security system, or participating in a neighborhood watch program can greatly contribute to your peace of mind.
We are here to assist you in finding a safe area with good neighbors who prioritize community well-being. We can help you identify neighborhoods and properties where like-minded individuals value safety and look out for one another. It's important to remember that Vilcabamba still offers many beautiful and secure areas where you can live your dream of a little farm and enjoy a happy, healthy life.
However, it's essential to acknowledge that Ecuador, like any other place, may not be for everyone. While we absolutely love it and think it's amazing, we understand that it might not align with everyone's preferences or comfort levels. It's crucial to carefully consider your own needs, expectations, and comfort when making such a significant decision.
If you need any specific guidance or assistance in exploring safety measures or finding the right neighborhood, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're here to support you throughout this journey. Your dream is valuable, Diana, and we believe there's a way to make it a reality while prioritizing your safety and peace of mind.
Take care, and stay positive. We're confident that with the right precautions and a supportive community, you can still achieve your dream in Vilcabamba.

As a 10 year EC resident in Cuenca, we are seeing armed home invasions here in upscale Puerta Del Sol (GringoLandia) and Challuabamba both expat preferred areas. EC has been contaminated by drug Cartels aka “gang” mass shootings almost weekly, now killing innocents including children. Anyone saying EC is safer than SanDiego etc doesn’t have full facts. EC is NOT the paradise it once was. I would recommend looking at another CONTINENT altogether. Sad, since these crimes seem to only escalate their intensity. My plan is to exit EC.

Yes, indeed. Charles Manson was a deranged but charismatic cult leader, and his disciples were pathetic losers--all the while specifically targeting the film star Sharon Tate to send a message to the world. But that type of mass murder in 1969 was a very very rare thing in the USA of that time (and unheard of in the Ecuador of 1969). But gradually the USA, since the 1960s & 1970s, was becoming more violent, and today, after 50 years, the USA is the most violent First World industrialized country in the world. However, Ecuador is catching up; for a small country, Ecuador is fast becoming a new Mexico or another Honduras, complete with a useless government & weak law "enforcement".
Sadly, the entire world is now more violent & insecure, from the top to the bottom.
