I feel terrible watching so many of your videos and never commenting, so I will say this. You both are doing an excellent job and quite a service for so many people considering Cuenca and Ecuador to visit and considering moving to. My wife and I have been looking at Cuenca for six or more years, but before we could go visit it, we found jobs, and five years later, we're back to looking to retire somewhere, and now we are definitely putting Cuenca at the top of our list. We like that you are from Denver, Colorado, where we've lived as well, but currently we are in Fort Morgan, ninety minutes away. But your many comparisons to living in Cuenca compared to Denver resonate with us since we well know what it is like here. With your wonderful videos, cheerfully presented, we are learning about Cuenca as well. Thank you. We will continue watching, and when we decide to come, we'll give you a big Colorado shout-out, and if you need something from Denver you forgot, just let us know, and we'll try to bring it down. Cuenca is a great place to retire. Lots of gringos and activities for retirees here. We both still work and Vegans Abroad is on top of that, so we don't have a lot of time to play unless we're recording it 🙂 Thanks for the offer and we may take you up on it. I stayed in there twice a few years ago. And the suites look the same. Some renewals would be perfect taking advantage of the backyard and the river. Keep it up the good job Javier.
Love the videos. The before mask videos are so much better but hopefully this will be over one day and life will be make to somewhat normal. Beautiful pictures , such a beautiful place and not so many people in your videos compared to other parts of the world. Maybe that is why people would enjoy vacationing and living in such a beautiful place.

Thank you two. My wife and I stayed at Apartamento Otorango and had a great introduction to Cuenca Ecuador. As you say in the vid we were able to see what real life is like living there. From shopping for food and cooking at home to laundry and all thing you would do home instead of at a hotel . We got to work with Xavier’ son Amaru who was kind and helpful to us on a level I can’t even begin to explain. The recommendation was well received.
Loved this! My husband is looking up Hotel Otorongo as we speak! We first visited Ecuador in Oct, 2017 and went to Quito and then Cuenca. We stayed at Hostel Macondo on Tarqui near Marascal Lamar, which is lovely and very similar to Hotel Otorongo. We plan on retiring to Cuenca in early September and would love to start our adventure by the Tomebamba while we look for a place. JP, your camera work is great and somehow you manage to capture everything I want to see! I especially enjoyed the walk around the area and to the mercado and laundry. I enjoyed seeing your Apartamentos Otorongo digs (which seemed perfect for an exploratory trip) and the video introduction with Javier. He does seem like a kind and good-natured guy, not to mention a great source of information on Cuenca. The video in the Mercado was a fine bonus. I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but I do enjoy fresh veggies and fruits with most every meal. Having such a wide variety available conveniently, and at affordable prices, would be a true joy. I was wondering if you might consider doing a video on your experiences with the legal documentation and visa process associated with moving to Cuenca. Some of the accounts I've seen and read about were nightmarish, while others seemed very straightforward and not terribly onerous. Thank you for taking me down memory lane for myself. It was emotional for me too. We visited that Mercado on Calle Larga many times as well. I was enjoying your tour of the Mercado until you described the (fermenting/rotting) meat and fish smells. That would make it very difficult to enjoy shopping there. The fruits and vegetables , however, looked great ... which I'm sure is really what you're shopping for. Another great video. This city looks very nice ... and comfortable.

Moving to Cuenca would be like an adventure. I would probably do volunteer work and travel around South America. We live in Maryland and own a house, which is the stumbling block right now. Sometimes it looks over cast and grey in Cuenca. Is that the case? I like how positive you both are.

The WiFi was very good. We've had better wifi everywhere in Ecuador than we had in Denver, so our expectations are very low. However, we both work online and Amelia did several video conferences from there without any problems.

Great video. Can you please do a video on how prices have changed since you have moved there. I am seeing how the new law has really made insurance prices go up. And also how rent has gone up, with so many gringos moving there. I was planning on moving there, but after watching those videos on prices going up, I wonder if I should change my mind? Thanks
We haven't noticed any price increases since we've been here so I'm not sure what the other folks are talking about. The previous renters paid the same amount we pay for our house. Combined, we've lived here over 3 years without a rent increase. Our food budget hasn't changed and we've been here almost 2 years. Health insurance rates have gone up. Our old rate was $117/month and now it's $156/month. However, my insurance back in the states was $1200/month just for me (JP). We pay $156/month here for both of us and it's better coverage. The inflation rate in Ecuador is less than 1%, which is the lowest of any country in the world. If people are saying prices have gone up, that may be to discourage other people from moving here. 🤷♂️
Good information for someone who wants to visit Cuenca and does not want to book a hotel room. How long did it take from the Otorongo apartments to the Mercado? 10 min? These walks are convenient ways to do some exercise early in the morning.
This place does look lovely! I stayed at a non-hotel studio apartment right behind the lower market for two weeks last July, and it cost me around $260 total. I was right next to the San Francisco plaza and ate street vendor food almost from the moment I arrived. I too love Cuenca!

Hi guys! I'm new to your channel, but I am enjoying catching up. I realize you have left Cuenca and moved to the coast. Is it intolerably hot and humid, as would be in Mexico? My other question is: once you moved out of Apartamentos Otorongo, were you so far away in another area that you no longer would visit the same mercado, panaderia, etc. ? Sorry if you've already covered this subject, as in another "day in our life." Gracias.
It's humid but not as hot here on this stretch of coast. It's winter now so the temps are in the 70s during the day. It rarely gets into the 90s during the summer. Mostly 80s. We lived about 1 mile from Apartamentos Otorongo. We went to a different mercado that was closer to our house, but still walked down to the mercado we showed in this video on occasion.

@@davidparasz4465 We were here for the summer, but inside for most of it due to the lockdown. It was pretty warm, but nothing like Kansas or Texas during July. We rarely ran the ac during the day. Just at night.
The air quality is a lot better than it used to be now that most of the blue puffer buses have been replaced with low emission diesel buses. It's a small city so it has never been as bad as Denver or other big cities. Great video. Can you please do a video on how prices have changed since you have moved there. I am seeing how the new law has really made insurance prices go up. And also how rent has gone up, with so many gringos moving there. I was planning on moving there, but after watching those videos on prices going up, I wonder if I should change my mind? Thanks
We haven't noticed any price increases since we've been here so I'm not sure what the other folks are talking about. The previous renters paid the same amount we pay for our house. Combined, we've lived here over 3 years without a rent increase. Our food budget hasn't changed and we've been here almost 2 years.
Health insurance rates have gone up. Our old rate was $117/month and now it's $156/month. However, my insurance back in the states was $1200/month just for me (JP). We pay $156/month here for both of us and it's better coverage.
The inflation rate in Ecuador is less than 1%, which is the lowest of any country in the world. If people are saying prices have gone up, that may be to discourage other people from moving here. 🤷♂️

Good information for someone who wants to visit Cuenca and does not want to book a hotel room. How long did it take from the Otorongo apartments to the Mercado? 10 min? These walks are convenient ways to do some exercise early in the morning.
It's about a 10 minute walk from Otorongo to Mercado 10 de Agosto. Not bad at all.
This place does look lovely! I stayed at a non-hotel studio apartment right behind the lower market for two weeks last July, and it cost me around $260 total. I was right next to the San Francisco plaza and ate street vendor food almost from the moment I arrived. I too love Cuenca!

Hi guys! I'm new to your channel, but I am enjoying catching up. I realize you have left Cuenca and moved to the coast. Is it intolerably hot and humid, as would be in Mexico? My other question is: once you moved out of Apartamentos Otorongo, were you so far away in another area that you no longer would visit the same mercado, panaderia, etc. ? Sorry if you've already covered this subject, as in another "day in our life." Gracias.
It's humid but not as hot here on this stretch of coast. It's winter now so the temps are in the 70s during the day. It rarely gets into the 90s during the summer. Mostly 80s.
We lived about 1 mile from Apartamentos Otorongo. We went to a different mercado that was closer to our house, but still walked down to the mercado we showed in this video on occasion.

@@davidparasz4465 We were here for the summer, but inside for most of it due to the lockdown. It was pretty warm, but nothing like Kansas or Texas during July. We rarely ran the ac during the day. Just at night.

It’s an 8+ hour drive from Quito to Cuenca. It’s a 40 minute flight.

The air quality is a lot better than it used to be now that most of the blue puffer buses have been replaced with low emission diesel buses. It's a small city so it has never been as bad as Denver or other big cities.
