Long day varieties needed here in Olympia. Wish we could plant onions now... sadly, our winters get too cold. Need to wait until next spring. 😢 Kate - 11/17/2023.
Followed your onion video last year and I had the best onion crop I've ever had. It was the first year starting from seed and I'll never grow them any other way. I had several over a pound and a couple at 1 1/3 pounds!!!! Thanks for all the great information!!!
This is the video I've been waiting for. I've got my white phantom onions and my red onion plants (from seeds that I got from you.) Now I know when and how to plant them. Thanks for sharing this video with us. I'd like to grow a 3 pound onion too. Heck, I'd like to grow a 1 pound onion. 😃And I am planting them between the kale. Thanks again.
Thanks for the tips, Trav! Bought some onion seeds from y’all a few weeks ago and planted them last weekend. They’ve all sprouted and I’m excited to try these new to me varieties this year here in North Central Florida! Love the videos! Keep up the great work. 🙏🏽🙌🏽🌱
We purchased our Timon and Chianti Onion Seeds from you. We will start them indoors in about a week in hopes of transplanting them in mid February. We will be planting on a double row this year using drip tape with a six inch spacing. Looking forward to watching your onions progress and Thank You for another good video!
I won't even start my onion seeds until Christmas time. The seeds came in this week so I'm ready once the time comes. If you planted extras, the kids could run another farm stand to help sell some of them come harvest time.
Thank you , Travis Looking forward to putting my onion transplants in the dirt ... God bless you & your family . Have a beautiful Thanksgiving & make amazing memories with those you love dearly . Mrs josette Tharp Montgomery County, Texas 🙏 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏✝️✝️✝️✝️💓
My Elephant Garlic is already coming up here in Havana Arkansas. Last year I lost some to the cold and it's not even cold here yet. I do have more coming up than I did last year.
@@LazyDogFarm mine are in raised beds. So I sprinkled a pre-plant fertilizer just like you recommended then I dusted the planting hole with a little bit of fertilizer as well when planting. I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to keep it organic or feed them that blue crank crank yet. I’m a good plant daddy so I wanna keep my hoes happy and producing for me ya know? But I just don’t know if they actually need the crank or not ya know? 😂
Travis, long time follower here. Your videos are great and I’ve learned a ton. Sincere appreciation. Question though. You put down a pre-plant fertilizer and I’ve seen you say before that you also hit them with agro-thrive in the drip system. My question is this. How long do you continue the balanced fertilizer regimen before switching to the high nitrogen regimen? I’ve been semi-successful in the past with onions but want to get really good at growing larger onions. I think my mistake has been continuing the balanced fertilizer feeding for too long. Your guidance may help to dial me in a little better. Thanks much and happy thanksgiving to you and yours.
@@amyk6028Travis can correct me as necessary but my understanding is that once bulbing begins, all fertilization stops. No balanced and no high nitrogen.
Balanced fertilizer initially (preplant and maybe an Agrothrive injection a couple weeks after planting). Then high nitrogen and no more once bulbing begins.
What date did you started the onion seeds on the trays, I planted mine mid October and aren't quite as big as the ones on your video. I am in San Antonio Tx. Thanks for your videos Travis.
I live in East Tennessee. I planted some cheap short day onions from like Home Depot. These were seed and the pack did say short day onions. I started seed late August. They made some nice plants. Planted in ground on October 9th. Will they make it through our possible cold winter???? I can cover them with frost covering!! They are about as big as my little finger. Just 2 narrow 15 foot rolls. Look great!!
Thank you for the advice! My starts are ready. I have a question about the fig plant start I purchased- do I need to bring it in the house for it's first winter? It is in a pot for now. Thanks again!
I know for next year, I need to handle all of my fall seeds in the spring because none of these places seem to have seeds late summer early fall when you need them.
Travis, I was really glad to see this onion video, and very much appreciate the tips. I'm wondering, however... Since garlic is also an allium, can they be grown in the same raised bed as onions? I was recently (last weekend) given a whole head of Inchelium Red garlic, and I don't really have any place to put the cloves, except in the raised bed where the onions are. Can they be planted together? Thanks!!
@@LazyDogFarm Awesome! I was a little worried about onion maggots, but since I'm starting with a brand new bed that nothing else has ever been in, with my own compost, and bagged bed soil as the top layer, that should not be a problem. I might throw a parsley in there to help deter that onion fly. Y'all have a great Thanksgiving down there!
Good evening I've been trying to grow onions for the last 3 years and had no success. I can get them to germinate then I'll put them in the ground then a week or to later they dry up and die can you tell what I'm doing wrong
If using organic fertilizer, I know that it takes a few weeks to a month to start breaking down. In the meantime the onions are in the ground and have no nutrients except what’s in the soil. I don’t have chickens so would it be wise to add mushroom compost or some type of bagged manure so they have their Nitrogen from the time they are put in the ground?
Definitely don't cut them right before planting. That was a mistake. But we do like trimming them in the seed trays a few weeks before transplanting. Seems to make a tougher, thicker transplant.
I have a question off subject of this video. Here goes. I have 4 rows of peas. Sugar snap and English. Rabbits ate them down to an inch from the ground while I was gone hunting for a few days. They were 18 inches tall. Will they grow back or do I need to replant?
Well id say replant..especially if there are no leaves! I have the same problem except some other creature..u suspect snails as i have armies of them..literally take a milk jug out before day break and fill 2 of them...BOTH MORNING AND NIGHT.. i thought our record breaking deought would knock them back..bo such luck..and putting out sluggo doesnt do anything...these and those damn cabbage worms have me spitting mad and half crazy

Love the onion videos Travis! BTW, onions don’t taste any better in straight rows than crooked rows.
Thank you for all your videos
Man your onion seedlings look so much better than mine. This is my first time growing onions so it makes sense they don’t look as good lol.
Feed them well and they should get going.

I am waiting until December, late December. There is supposed to be a hard freeze coming. Zone 8 b
Northwest Florida
I’m on the NC/VA border and we had a 22 degree night last week already. 🤷🏽♂️

High nitrogen in the beginning, then a balanced fertilizer once bulbing starts 👍🏼
Yickes i thought he once said the opposite..explains a lot around here.

They do fine though the winter.

We'll be covering that on an upcoming video. But I'd let it go dormant outside after the first frost, then bring it indoors.
For YEARS, I have heard my daddy say you can plant more per acre when yon have crooked rows! 😂
I know for next year, I need to handle all of my fall seeds in the spring because none of these places seem to have seeds late summer early fall when you need them.

Yeah you should be able to grow them in the same bed.

QUESTION
How do you keep MICE from chewing and destroying your drip tape?
Used to have that problem pretty bad. But we rescued a few barn cats from the humane society and no more issues.
I live in Albany, GA. Till what day I can plant?
I've planted as late as mid-December. They might not get quite as big when planted that late, but you'll still grow some decent onions.
Will onions do ok with mulching ?
I'm not a huge fan of mulching them because it seems to keep the bulbs too moist. But plenty of folks do it.

I don’t have chickens so would it be wise to add mushroom compost or some type of bagged manure so they have their Nitrogen from the time they are put in the ground?
Can I used a weed barrier fabric to help control the weeds for my onions?
You could. Just make sure there is room for the onion bulb to push through the fabric and enlarge.
In one of your early videos you were testing a row of cut onions and some not cut. Did you ever get a difference?
Definitely don't cut them right before planting. That was a mistake. But we do like trimming them in the seed trays a few weeks before transplanting. Seems to make a tougher, thicker transplant.
Damn you were like 12 hours too late in posting this! I planted my onions two days ago 😂

My question is can i grow a short day onion in an intermidiate day zone?
How do you keep the rabbits out of your garden
Dogs and cats, and the occasional lethal weapon.
Got any onion starts you want to sell.
I don't. All my extras are spoken for. Sorry.
