  • Unannounced to the public, the Strasburg Rail Road ran a steam powered freight train from Leaman Place Jct. to East Strasburg on April 5th, 2021. Powering the train is SRC 90; a 1924 Baldwin built light 2-10-0 decapod steam locomotive. The trailing weight was 1,150 tons, which is a lot for a 97 year old steam locomotive.

      I know, it often seems railways never use steam engines for trains that aren't for carrying passengers.

    One thing to consider: The tonnage ratings on steam locomotives was originally considered with rail cars that did not have roller bearings.
    As a result of roller bearings having 1/6th the resistance of the journal bearings, in reality, with a good crew the No. 90 could handle a train weighing nearly 7,000 tons if all the cars have roller bearings on the axles. Also, a steam locomotive's basic function is constant torque, variable horsepower. Meaning, once it is able to start the train, even with only 1,150 tons of modern grain hoppers, if the track permitted No. 90 could handle the to however fast the engineer wanted to run it with the throttle wide open and run (if the engine is capable of it) up to, if not over, 100 mph no sweat.

    • @nasanierulastname2997
      @nasanierulastname2997 2 года назад +1

      AFAIK, journal bearings are no longer allowed on the national network, meaning this steam loco has a good chance of pulling a pretty long consist.

    She's basically the only loco they had on hand to work that train. The SW1500 couldn't do it, nor could any of the smaller steam engines. We like to think this was staged for our benefit, but this was operational practicalities managing things, not railfan needs. The Railroad needed to move a train, only one loco on the roster could do it and that led to these scenes.

    This is the third steamer I’ve seen tonight alone that’s been recently used in revenue service I’m convinced these public steam locos restorations are reviving them because I know of dozens of projects working on many steam locomotives all across the country. Maybe simpler was better than all this higher tech super expensive new diesels?

      I volunteer on a small tourist railroad, we have both an authentic steam engine and a Diesel engine.
      We love our steak steam engine, and use her every chance we can, but a lot of work goes into it. Someone has to get there two hours early to light the fire, we need people to run the speeder behind it for fire suppression, and she needs much more frequent oiling.

    • @jwrailve3615

      @@malamutehunter doesn’t it feel worth it though everytime to see her back under her own fire? There’s no magic in diesels. I think the Art Deco style of diesels from 30-40’s were appealing but the grumble rather than the sounds of a steam locomotives whistle from miles away is just something incredible.
