you got to have that mindset that every time you step on that starting line you’re either going to finish with a win or a lesson, love these vids Charles, hope to see running more running videos!

I was sick as a dog the morning of our cross country regional championship in college. Was seriously thinking about dropping out. But told my coach I would give it a shot anyway. Had nothing to lose, pressure was totally off. And I PR’ed by a full minute and we qualified for nationals. XC is a mind game and perspective is everything.

Çool seeing you running on the bike path in Eugene today! Hope to see you racing more XC later this year or early 2024 in Europe. Cross plays to your strengths.

I had a realization when deciding whether to get surgery or wait until after XC season. I realized that after a year of pt not working that I needed to get the surgery. Throughout pt all I could think about was racing and getting back to that. Looking back on that I should’ve focused on the problem which was healing. Heal first, then worry about getting fast.

This video is literally perfect timing for me. Just ran a half-marathon that I've been training for, for over 12 weeks. It went horribly. I was aiming for sub 70 but did 78min... Lots to learn and it's time to get back up and view the good side of it. Keep up the great work Charles!!

Hey Charles great video! I’m happy you’re uploading more of these videos because we all would love to come out with greater racing results. I personally really appreciate them as it is nice to see how others think about their race performances. Please upload more races and how you think to yourself during/after them, as I know I won’t be the only one that wants to see more!!😁😁

I had a tough senior year of HS XC, I wasn't hitting my times and I also got sick and missed half the season! I came back and just continued to work hard and ended up PR-ing at the state race and also finished 3rd for my team (i was normally the 7th runner)!
I think training never can go 100% your way and it's about how you adapt to those bumps in the road that can make you a stronger and more versatile runner!

Always great to learn something from any race experience. Amazing that your team was able to apply lessons from the first race and everyone PR'd.

This was perfect timing. Just 2 days ago our team ran pre states and I went in with overwhelming confidence. The states course plays so much to my advantage, it is a strength based course (I am largely a strength based runner) and I had been having an awesome season so far. My team was hoping to prove themselves at this meet as we really hadn’t run any at any large meets yet. I was also seen as the low stick. Reality struck during the 2nd mile and I really had tough race. Thank you for putting this video out!

My most important race during my time of being a high school cross country and track runner has probably been my second time going under 18 which was earlier this season. Long story short I had a meh freshman XC season, then a great track season and now a way better cross season this year as a sophomore. Running 17:45 at that meet felt so refreshing because it finally felt like all the work I put in the summer and track actually payed off and I’m where I wanna be. I’m only gonna keep getting quicker from here on out.

This exact thing happened to me (sort of):
Yesterday I was at a meet on an insanely fast course. I had been looking forward to running it since before track season ended, and I knew that if I was gonna break 16, that's where it would be. I also knew that this was the meet for my team to win. We thought we were untouchable, and that we would easily take first. Through the first mile, I felt great and was on a perfect pace: 5:07. Second mile I came through at 10:19, last 1.1, I'm getting a little confused because it feels like I'm running way farther than I'm supposed to. When I round the final turn and see the clock it says 16:40 and I am confused and mad. I have a good kick and don't give up, but I am crushed. After I finish (third place) I find out that the athletic director at the school messed up the course and it was almost 300m extra, so about 3.28 instead of 3.10, which is exactly what my friends who were wearing watches got. I turn around and see the rest of my team finish, our number 5 coming in 18th place and I'm happy again. How could we lose? I talk to my team and some kids on other teams, get congratulated, blah blah blah, do my cooldown, and as I'm packing up my stuff getting ready to leave, they announce the team scores. We got 2nd by 1 point.
I will be going back to that course (and it will be a 5k not a 5.3k) for my conference meet so hopefully we do well there.

Last year I was coming off of a very disappointing XC season. My pr was actually this upcoming Wednesday at the end of September last year and really just nothing clicked. Then head into track not really knowing how I’d fit I was the 3/4th runner on our 4x8. Second 4x8 of the year though I got the baton second and went out running a 2:11 down 11 seconds from the previous years pr. Next meet I prd and broke the school record in the 800. The rest of the season I led the team in the 800 and now know where my speed is.

I just had a race that went horribly last week. My friend and I have been close to each other in every race and we have been competing all season. He had a really good race an ended up running a 40 sec PR and cracked varsity for a freshman. It was so mentally draining just watching him pass all these people as we went through the race. After the race I had a similar moment to yours and I was mad at myself for not competing. but then, I turned it in to the drive to do better next time in races, and in training. I’m running at Nike Twilight at Lavern Gibson this next weekend and I think this drive to do better will show up in the race. Just wanted to share.
