  • Electric railways are a non-polluting energy efficient mode of transport for freight as well as people. Traction power for electric trains can be Direct Current (DC), Alternating Current (AC) or even a composite system employing both AC as well as DC.
    A DC electrification system has several advantages. It allows rapid acceleration and braking of DC electric motors, DC systems cost less compared to AC systems. There is less energy consumption and they take less space and have lower weight. Importantly, a DC system does not cause electrical interference with nearby communication lines. However, DC voltage decreases with increasing length and therefore necessitating Expensive substations at frequent intervals typically 2-4 km. The overhead wire or third rail must be relatively large and heavy.
    AC Traction has several advantages which have relegated DC traction to the side-lines. The AC power can be easily stepped up or down. It allows easy controlling of AC motors and the interval between substations is larger being between 15-20 Km. Moreover, it can use lighter catenaries and low currents can be transmitted at high voltages. Reduced capital costs of electrification. Like DC, AC traction also has some drawbacks such as increased costs of maintenance of lines and need for increased clearances in tunnels due to the overhead wires.
    Composite System (or multi-system) trains are used to provide continuous journeys along routes that are electrified using more than one system.

    With a personal interest in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia and - to a lesser extent - France, where the rail network is, in all three cases, a mixture of higher-voltage AC and lower-voltage DC the various different 'plus' and 'minus' points about the two systems are of very great interest, so thank you for explaining it all so clearly.
    I do quite a lot of tracing rail journeys on RUclips in those three countries and it is always quite a challenge to detect whether one is under AC or DC catenary by how heavy the overhead wire looks and how often one sees a transformer station beside the railway...although there is invariably some text that takes that guesswork away!

    Electric railways are not necessarily non-polluting if the power plant producing the electricity they use is produced at the power plant by coal, natural gas, or nuclear power. The only way that electric railways can be non-polluting is if the electricity needed to power them is produced by wind, solar, or tidal means. Any other way just shifts the pollution from the individual engine to the power plant that supplies the power.

    Multi-system locomotives or EMUs are probably the best solution in the long run when there are multiple systems in use, making expanding the routes and redirecting rolling stock from one route to another much easier.

    My home state N.Calif SF/Bay Area has a heavy rail transit system BART serving four counties some 120 + miles of track. The trains are powered via 3rd rail 1Kv DC each station stop or close by has a power substation with DC power houses. The original traction motors were DC, 500V wired in series each car had four motors. In the late 1990's a changeover was made to 3 phase traction motors along with a 3 phase inverter.

    I have a question and didnt get answer for it after watching this video, single phase 25kV line used here and neutral is grounded through wheel and railway track, now my question is what ever is the amount of current flowing from 25KV phase goes to neutral (ground), how the circuit is completed here, and what about the losses when the neutral is grounded? Please answer

    Question: Why do I see some diesel locomotive/multiple units also having AC/DC traction motors? Are they different from electric locos/EMUs?

    • @TheTrainStory
      @TheTrainStory  3 года назад

      Those are diesel-electric locomotives/multiple units. A Diesel engine drives an alternator that powers the traction motors. The difference is, a diesel-electric loco carries its power supply onboard while an electric locomotive draws power from overhead or third rail catenary.

    MOST OF EUROPE USE 15kV 16 2/3 Hz AC when it's near DC. To increase speed the had a transformer with many windings a fed the DC motor WITH NEAR DC CURRENT in the locomotive. Today use of ASYNCRON MOTORS AND USE THREE PHASE TYRISTOR REGULATED AC TO INCREASE OR DECREASE SPEED!

      Because of absence of sheds. Presently all WCAMS are homed in Kalyan shed (I am not sure about Valsad). Therefore the locomotives are rostered within the serviceability range of Kalyan shed. Although technically, the WCAMs can run on all electrified sections of IR.
