- In YuGiOh Competitive History, Billy Brake claimed his second title and back-to-back wins at YCS Toronto and YCS Ohio in 2011 with his Plant Synchro or Tengu Plants deck, solidifying himself into Yugioh lore as one of the best players of all-time and Plant Synchro as one of the best Synchro decks ever! This was only the second time that a player repeated a win back-to-back since Ryan Hayakawa. In this retro deck profile, I cover the ins and outs of the Tengu Plant deck and Extra deck capabilities relative to the meta at the time and some of the market values of cards too!

Great video! Please keep doing these retro deck profiles, they’re a huge nostalgia trip. I remember this was when I was first seriously invested in the game and as a kid couldn’t afford it but always netdecked and had a blast on Dueling Network. You do the deck justice with all high rarity cards and thanks so much for your insight

I remember buying 20 hyper librarian from a site on a pre order for like 15 a piece. Then went to nats that year and sold/traded them all but 1 for me at 50 a piece. So much profit that day. Thanks for the memory.
I love how concise and well paced this video is. You break down why and how every card had it’s value and what made them good in the deck. This vid makes me wish I had those beautiful max rarity cards, it’s such a stunning deck.

Nicholas Rowland I play Felgrand Dragon Deck. It is good but you need to know the game mechanics and the cards rulings to play well and get around stuff.

I play a slightly tweaked version of Billy’s list (it’s like 37/41 cards the same) with a few of my friends. It’s fantastic mirror match and really encapsulates what Yu-Gi-Oh! was like back then, that sort of “middle Yu-Gi-Oh!” that took place after Goat but before the ‘break my board’ / hand trap meta of modern formats.

@@crayonjambe7515 irl. We have a group of 10-15 guys who just have collections of old formats. Right now I have a deck from every format from September 09 through April 14.

Here within the first 30 views! I love synchro decks and miss them a ton. I understand why Level Eater and Dandylion had to get banned but I still miss stuff like this

Oh man this was "The Deck" to play when i started taking Yu-Gi-Oh more competitively. It was only ever online matches (i couldn't afford those cards lol)

I quit because of power creep. The plant era was my favorite by far it was so fun and there were so many options.

Glad you’re liking them man. And I can’t go over every combo but yeah one for one dandy debris was absurd in how many pluses it netted off the TGHL and Formula.

Loved this deck back then. But one little thing that you missed was that, the sangan ruling was changed right after leviathan came out. From my memory, YCS Indianapolis was the only event (With Grenesaurus being the only Rank 3 out) where that ruling was in place and then it was changed before YCS toronto. Correct me if I’m wrong though.
I’m pretty sure I mentioned that the ruling was incorrect at Gen Con that year but afterwards was adjusted. But yeah Gen Con was the reason TGU shot up to well over $100.

I remember this tourguide was 100 then they reversed the sangan ruling then it went down back to 10 bucks. Then people realize it's still good and shot back up to 100

XYZ material were never considered on the field. No official tournament ever ruled a Sangan search off of a detach that I remember. I was around from 2010-13.
Is there any format that is cheap around that time? I mean, Tele-DAD a few years earlier was stupid expensive, Dino Rabbit after this was also nuts. I remember wanting to build a Tengu Plant Deck like this one but it was also expensive.
Speaking of prices, while I do miss the generic days, I think the fact that it's mostly archetypes nowadays helps a lot in lowering the costs. Gone are the days of a one-card-fits-all like Tour Guide or Dark Armed which, due to their high impact and splashability, were in high demand in their respective primes thus causing the price hike.
I’d rather play generic Yugioh because innovation is far my important across all decks and you can utilize cards far more loosely, without being restricted by archetypes/themes unnecessarily. Also, there’s plenty of formats you can look into that are far cheaper pre 08, just depends what decks you’re interested in.

Just to let you know your debate on pot of avarice coming back would not be great for the game but it’s at 3 in the ocg but I understand why it is not at 3 in the tcg because of danger
I think it’s super unhealthy and a really strong power card unfortunately in this day and age. I guess I’m just living in the nostalgia of when stuff like that was relatively fair because there was a mid and late game.

Imo retro is a deck from a time of the old school sets 2000-2005 or so
Russe R Yugioh didn’t come to the tcg until 2002, but if you know something about some sets before LOB let me know so I can Profile it 😂😜 retro just implies past format. This was 2011, 8 years ago roughly. That’s longer than some players have been alive so as far as I’m concerned this definitely falls under that umbrella of retro/pastime.

Would it be possible to see duels with this deck?
Probably not because I don’t have the cards to make multiple copies. Second it’s already hard to find people to play with and record in real life because I don’t go to locals often. When I do go, I want to relax and have fun with friends, not force them or myself to record stuff, I’d rather play tourney and such. I want my free time from RUclips so I can actually enjoy my hobby. And thirdly, it’s even harder to find people who actually KNOW or remember how to play some of these older formats well enough to warrant high quality gameplay. People always get bashed in duels and it’s very disrespectful. At most, I might do fan duels on DB on stream or something one day.

Does 2014 HAT/FAT format not count as generic YGO?
I mean sure, but it wasn't necessarily the best deck of it's time. Plants was the last time that a generic deck was definitively the best deck hands down. You have to remember during 2014 we also had Geargia, Sylvans, Infernity, LS variants, Bujins, etc, all relatively equal in the playing field, but all archetype based.

New Camera?
No. I just did this in 60fps as opposed to 30. Although it takes longer to render and upload, I do like how it looks on cards more so than 30fps. I haven’t bought a new camera (other than my vlog camera last year for my second channel) for this channel in over 3 years I think? Unfortunately, RUclips doesn’t cover the expense of a nice new camera, I don’t have enough patrons, people who get Merch, or viewers yet for that. Maybe one day down the line I’ll be able to get newer better equipment.

They didnt matter before stratos e heros never were much of a part of yugioh history as much a Destiny heroes ! The hero engine was a big part of the gx era and some of the 5ds era

You could always try to put the video on a faster playback speed? As much as I’d like to trim down the fat or commentary, I enjoy it and it’s what comes most natural for me so it would be disingenuous to try to hurry it up for the sake of some abstract time constraint. I can’t please everyone, some people don’t mind it, others dread it. Editing would be very time consuming if I sat there trying to do jump cuts on a half hour video. Editing my 2nd channel videos gives me enough editing practice and flexibility when it’s comes to that stuff. I’ve also never been one to do more than a single take for a video unless I trip over the into or something happens like me getting a phone call. I usually do my stuff unscripted to keep it as natural as possible. I just want to be authentic.
So we're just taking decks that did god and showing them off in highish rarity. Deck needs trooper to help out thubder king in the mirror.
I liked trooper as the format went on to out TKR, but there’s tons of power cards I hated milled tbh.

I been enjoying the retro videos. But can you do 1 thing and stop trying to blast his deck choices he won mutiple ycs's with this deck. Im sure he would of heavily blown you out in that format. Be a bit humble but keep up the great videos. Im working in that tele dad deck you profile its fun af
