    I feed them Amaranth flowers and the leaves. Chopped up leaves are a big treat and the nutrition is superb. Once my Amaranth goes to seed I will be storing it for later feed. Love these little birds. I have Button quail and Coturnix and they both love the Amaranth and almost any kind of bugs. I also give them a few cap fulls of apple cider vinegar in their water to help with their PH leaves and nutrient intake.

    I’ve been Googling a lot and I found your video very informative! Our cat brought us back a quail and we were shocked it was still alive! It wasn’t hurt but it was in shock so we decided to keep it to make sure it was okay. We didn’t know what to feed it but this video helped a lot! Thanks 😊

    I've had my quail for three years now. My quail absolutely love watermelon. They will eat it right down to the green. I don't buy it special for them but when I have it they get the scraps!
    They love cabbage also but it is important to blanch it so they can eat it easily.
    Cooked mashed up carrots.
    Oregano. I buy bottles of it from the dollar store especially when it is cold and dump it in their feed.
    I feed mine 22% game bird feed as the main diet.

    You need to feed your quail a certain amount of protein each day if you want your quail to lay eggs for food and incubating, minimum I would give mine is 17% protein but game bird breeder has 22% which is the best. I just supplement that food with leafy material and dried mealworms etc for variety.

    i have a quail question , i got 3 females , just for eggs and as pets , they have a big indoor space, and a huge outdoor landscaped area (3mx 3m) with loads of hiding places and grasses to hide in , i noticed they slept outside during the summer but now its raining should i force them to go inside at dark , they just seem to sit there in the rain (and yet they dont wash in water , they love their dust baths)

    • @splitarrowfarm
      @splitarrowfarm  2 года назад +2

      I would let them do what they want but they might not realize they can even go inside so you could try putting them in there and seeing what they do. Best of luck!

    Does anyone have quails and chickens, and if so, why do you keep the quail? I have quail and love them dearly, but I also want chickens some day. Is there anything quail are good for that chickens won't be? Is having 2 different laying or meat birds beneficial? Thanks in advance

      Great question, we actually have both. I think it all goes towards a personal preference and what your town allows you to have.

      A lot of quail breeds are hardy. You should check your breed quickly, but we have our Cotunix quail outside all year and live in the North East of the USA.

      Just make sure you have a spot they can comfortably get away from the wind and rain. They seem to be ok when either cold or wet, but NOT BOTH at the same time.
      For mine I decided to get a 6x6 greenhouse on my porch to house them through this last winter which worked great though the porch was crowded af, but it was much easier access for me to get to. But the year before I kept them outside but I went extra and insulated 80% of the run with foam and plastic sheeting and a radiant heater for them. They did well in both setups. This next winter I will probably move the greenhouse back onto porch since that worked so great (it's in the yard the other 3 seasons). But I'm tempted to try and add removable insulation to it that I can use every year, cause it did still get into the 20s in there on the bad days, even with tarps over it as wind breaks for cracks and tarp underneath with straw to keep cold from coming underneath deck into it.

    I have a few questions if I may. 1. How smelly are quail compared to rabbits or. chickens? 2. Can I get an idea of how long a bag of 50lb feed would last x number of birds? Is their waste good for composting.? Thanks!

    • @splitarrowfarm
      @splitarrowfarm  2 года назад +3

      Hi Carmen all great questions! 1) I would say that they smell similar to chicken, 2) 50lb bag would probably serve ~20 birds for over a month 3) yes their waste is good for composting! We actually pour a lot to their waste in with our chickens and they love to pick at it before we compost everything

      Yes i have around 20 quail. I buy 50 pounds every a little over a month. They waste some of it. I have feeders they knock some out of. I have poop trays under there pens. I change thrm every wk or so. There isnt a very bad smell. I have the quail in 3 cages under my carport.

    When do you switch your quail from starter feed to regular feed? I’m wondering if this happens sooner then chickens since they lay so much sooner?

    • @splitarrowfarm
      @splitarrowfarm  2 года назад +1

      Great question, you want to switch to a layer feed around 1-week before laying will start. Depending on the breed of quail you are raising this can differ. For example, coturnix quail lay at ~8 weeks where as Bobwhite quail will lay at a much later time so it can differ quite a bit.

    I know this doesn't apply to the video, but since you have rabbits, I thought y'all might be able to help! I have a male rabbit that has sired two litters for me this summer. When I went to breed my does a week ago with him, he was EXTREMELY aggressive. I separated and tried three more times that night. Then today I tried again with a few different does and he continued to be aggressive towards them! Any ideas what is going on? I've moved him into several different cages or tractors to switch up the territory and keep it neutral. Any ideas what's going on?

    • @splitarrowfarm
      @splitarrowfarm  2 года назад +4

      Oh no, we haven’t dealt with an aggressive male before but we have had aggressive females. I suggest having them in a new space when breeding that way neither will be territorial

      Im sure you know this but always take the does to the bucks cage. Also if you are still having trouble check his boy parts make sure hes not hurt.

      If you aren't squeamish, raising your own mealworms can save tons of money and doesn't hardly take any maintenance. Just give them scraps like peelings from bananas, potatoes, fruit, etc or just chopped potatoes twice a week. The only expenses there are the wheat bran for beddings and potatoes if you don't have enough scraps.
      Maintenance can be as simple or as complex as you wanna, some people don't sort the life stages from each other and some do. I sort, which added the expense of sifters and more time. But I really like keeping the cycles apart so the pupae don't get nibbled on.
      If you do get into raising your own and you prefer to sift, do NOT use rolled oats as bedding because they clog up the sifters and make separated stages much harder. But rolled oats works fine if you don't separate.
