You are a good teacher. Full of good advice and kindness. I so appreciate your way of speaking..so regular. Like what I heard all around and everywhere when iwas growing up. Thank you for being so helpful. You are a good neighbor to us watching ! Thank you
Thank you for sharing this. I am buying some quail soon, I have ordered a cage and the feed and am waiting until I have the set up before I buy the birds. This video was very helpful. I had thought about giving them their own eggshells ground up but hadn’t thought of drying them in the oven first, and I had no idea I couldn’t give them avacado or parsley
Good info, I see a lot of people saying they blend the crumble up a little more for the first week or so, maybe I’m just lazy but I just add a little water to the bottom of the feeder to soften the feed up and they chow down on it. Probably helps them stay hydrated too. It’s always worked for me :)
Hi Im so excited as have the first eggs arriving in a few days. Got a book on quail and will definitely follow you for your wisdom and encouragement thank you
Great information!! Thank you so much!! Do you have to take them off of the 30% and go to layer feed or can you keep them on the game bird? And, can they have pea and beans straight from the garden?
A live in a very suburban area where there are no stores nearby that carry quail feed. There is a nearby Wal-Mart that has chicken feed, but that's not near enough protein, especially for young quail. So I have to make a long drive to a Tractor Supply Co further out in a more rural area. At least they have large bags so I don't have to make the drive often. There are other stores nearby where I can get meal worms and cracked corn and millet and other things to supplement the feed, but that game bird feed is a haul for me to get...
I want some but don’t know we’re to get them I have learned lots of what to do but am I glad that you have said what not to feed them thanks for the info god bless
My family and I are getting quail super soon, 1 because the price of eggs,2 they seem so much fun (yes i know quail and Chicken eggs aren’t the same) thanks for the info
Ended up with 14 out of buying 25 each time. First time cats knocked incubator down and catastrophe for the eggs but now have 5 day old chicks. 14 and number 15 was too weak to even stand. Didn't make it more than a few hours. So hope to breed some before winter hits and increase numbers a bit. Got dividers in Wynola cages to even out males to females. Hopefully more females. Wynola looks pretty well made. Just cheap tubs for brooders and extra flat cat beds on the bottom. Chicken wire for the top to prevent escapees later. Read they like toys like cat balls. All set there.
On the Purina bag of layer feed says do not feed to males. But if you have a 5 to 1 female to male ratio is it fine to feed the layer feed to these males?
Interesting, I am considering them too but I am very limited on transportation so I were considering if there ways to be self sufficient on these for egg laying? Like I know you can "farm" worms (got european nightcrawlers as we speak), mealworms and so on for the protein. But are there other parts of the feeding that you can do yourself? I heard that they need the other 80% of their diet to be grains only since they are "granivores"?
Parsley is toxic to quail and can quickly lead to diarrhea and vomiting. This has been studied by experts and I do not know the science behind it. Just passing along information. Thanks
I just found your video while scrolling through. We bought our first quail chicks locally, and we have learned a lot about how important quality feed is for health and good egg production. We just ordered a batch of hatching eggs from Myshire Farm. They have been in the incubator for 7 days now. Just thought I would touch base with you because we live in Anderson County as well. We moved out here from the Dallas area about 2 years ago. We started with chickens and Nigerian Dwarf goats. And have since added KuneKune pigs and Quail.
@@colonyhillshomestead4683 hey I like the vids. Some people may only find certain channels so mine as well cover everything just incase your their one stop shop. Thanks for doing them.
@@colonyhillshomestead4683 no it wasnt, as long as i feed them that food they stop, its so annoying. I threw away the chicken food i had and got kalbach feed and im questioning that now, but as soon as i started feeding the quail purina game bird feed they stopped, im gonna try a different feed for them now too

Thanks!!
My quail love cucumber, zucchini and watermelon as well. Myshire Farm also said citrus is a big no no for quail. Thank you for sharin'! :)
Yes no citrus no avocado and no onion/garlic

You can leave them on the high protien but they don't need it...yes peas and beans go for it!!
Certain beans they can't digest.
@@Banishedsoulsofficial what kind of beans that they can't have

Sorry to hear that. Tsc is a good choice
See if you can find soybean meal. To add to chicken feed. It's 47-48 percent protein.
See if Chewy has it they deliver

Will quail eat black sunflower seeds?
Good video
Yes they will and they will eat them sprouted also
excellent. I am interested in growing more supplement food for them. What would you suggest?
Milo micro greens are a good source
Do I need a layer food ? Or just a game bird food? My quail are just 8 weeks old.
A starter food is costing more than a layer feed. If your using game bird go with a layer feed.

Personally I like quail eggs better. Yum !! If you are starting from hatching your own… Colony Hills Farm on eBay 👍

Yes it’s absolutely fine!
@@colonyhillshomestead4683 Perfect. Thank you.
Black sunflower seeds are large, can quail eat them without shelling them?
They will more than likely shell them. Black sunflower seeds have a thinner shell than striped. Great source of protein and fats

I also supplement with fodder but yes they are reliant on seeds/grains
