I live in a small town with restrictions on what kind of animals you can have on your property (no livestock). I have been considering rabbits for a while and found Slightly Rednecked from my research, and I was already thinking about Silver Foxes, so that was an immediate subscribe! Then I saw him mention quail and double checked my city ordinance regarding livestock and found them conveniently missing from the list. Now the wheels are turning for 2 different animals and on only a 1/4 acre. Time to work on my cage building skills!
A year ago I had 10 birds. Now I have almost 50 birds, and over 100 eggs in 3 different incubators. All because of the advice I received from these two guys!! I absolutely love these guys.
I credit Chris for a BIG part of my first-year success raising quail simply for his hutch build videos. Thank you, Chris! I house my birds outside in my yard. I built 5 hutches of various sizes last year using Chris’s quail hutch design with a few small variations….it works very well for outdoor housing up in Canada where I live. I had no problems with predators (we have skunks, raccoons, domestic dogs and cats, weasels, coyotes, etc here). Rural small town. I did not overwinter my quail outside, simply because the outside temps are too low to provide water.
Definitely one of the best videos I've seen. Commercial quail farm V/S private quail farm. I totally love the information I'm getting from this interaction. We bought a $1000 dollar commercial incubator and I had a 75% hatch rate from mail order eggs from Texas, I'm in Tennessee. So the incubator is superb when it comes to the perfect climate and temperature. Coturnix quail, btw!
It is great seeing you two together again. You both are great to learn from. Seeing two different aspects of quail raising helps others to find what works best for them.
Yay! What a fun collaboration! I’m gonna share this with my customers cuz these are things I hear a lot and it does confuse newbies cuz they don’t have enough experience to decide what they want to do.
I’ve only been watching RUclips videos for about a year and a half and came across Chris cause I liked the channel name and wow he has quail and interesting information. Then follow a few other channels and they have/had quail, my brain started working. Then Myshirefarms and well game over. Now I have quail and Zack and Chris were major reasons for the interest. Now there are a few other people I follow and basically these people all agree on self-sufficiency and that’s what I like.
Loved this !!! Enjoyed seeing you together. Slightly Rednecked, I started watching you quite awhile ago. Then I found Myshire. And I built a quail hutch loosely based on your hutch. (loosely based on yours because I don't have carpentry skills really and I didn't end up being able to put a door on my closed-in side). Thank you so much for all you do to teach and support.
I'm seeing lots of overlap in both quail and rabbit groups that I follow in my desire to absorb EVERYTHING I can about homestead stuff. Love and regularly (daily, sometimes binge) watch Myshire. I'm a recent subscriber to Slightly Rednecked. I am fan of Living Traditions and others where I keep seeing BOTH of these guy's names! This is awesome stuff.
what I have done for literally every animal I have ever owned, (reptiles, birds, farms animals,) is I will do a tone of research from at least 3 or more sources, and I will make my own hybrid of those sources based on what works best for me.
I've raised quail for over a decade, and the only incubator I've ever used is a Lil Giant still air, with hand-turning. Love it and it works perfect for me.
Great video, love seeing you both together! One thing I'm learning about quail is I have adapted to different ways of doing things from the very beginning, learning to try something new to see if it works better and taking advise from ALL ways of quail raising. I'm grateful for you both for your willingness to share what you know to help us all. :)
As someone who's currently deciding whether or not to feed layer to mature Coturnix quail I appreciate not only the information, but the delivery as well.
Awesome video I love the collaboration and a lot of clarification that you guys made… when it comes to raising quail different strokes for different folks however you raised your quail …love it. I’m currently incubating MyShire eggs.
Great video! I watch and are subscribed to both. I have had quail since last April and have learned so much from both of you! Keep up the great work! God bless you both!!🥰🥰
We just started a small family farm, including quail. Absolutely love them, but man incubating them had been super tricky!! Really appreciate your tips and can’t wait to give it a try at our next time! We have some hatching today from our incubator…..only 3 out of 22 eggs hatched! It’s frustrating but we are going to keep trying until we get it right!
Used the Little Giant on my 2nd hatch. Was 9+ day old eggs. Likely closer to 11. 9 days in shipping. Got about 52 percent hatch which was more than expected. Used still air model. Would have rater fan. Heat prove was loose on a plastic sheet too so EVERY TIME opening it, the sensor would end up in a slightly different place throwing the temp calibration off. In the still air model, I imagine it was much worst than fan. I noticed I sometimes had to do an adjustment of nearly 4 degrees Celsius to maintain what was a settled temp prior to. Almost lost my eggs due to first time discovering it. Was low and I have no idea how long for.
My wife and I are preparing to move from Long Island to an acre property in western PA. I got rid of my quail and my coop a few months ago. Once we move I’ll be starting up again but since I will also have chickens I’ll be using the quail and quail eggs to feed my dogs. I’m looking forward to it
I have used a lot of cheep-o incubators, and some do a good job but most dont and have little issues like keeping temp and humidity levels where you want them, like most do. I eventually upgraded and bought 5 Borotto 24 automatic incubator's with humidity pump & bottle, and man I wouldn't go to anything else now, I feel spoiled.. :D Anyway I really enjoy your videos, thank you Sir, it was interesting getting two perspectives from the pro's.
Lol i feed a mix 2 parts game bird starter 1 part laying mash 1 part chick starter Non medicated I have chickens and chicks too my serama chicks and hen gets the same mix because i heard these tiny birds do better on game bird food ...so the mix working for them too My quail chicks just get game bird starter .... sometimes chick food mixed in because its a smaller grind but you can blend it or wet the food for tiny chicks too...
I am just getting started! I am confused I love your coop but I thought you had to keep 1 male & a couple hens. 1)So can I keep 3 males & 12/15 female together? 2) Will my eggs be fertile when I hatch?
Yes, you can keep quite a few hens together and the corresponding number of roosters (ie: 25 hens and 5 roosters) if you give them enough space, and you can switch out your roosters without too much trouble….but it’s best not to switch the hens out once they’ve developed their pecking order or you might have aggression problems…
How quickly do you need to get the eggs so they don't freeze if you plan on trying to hatch them in an incubator? My cage is in the garage during winter (outdoor run otherwise) but the garage isn't insulated so it's still pretty cold. This batch is just starting to lay and I want to raise a next batch soon. These are from Zach's business btw, lol.
I heard that avian bird flu is a concern in some states this year, and I know turkeys and chickens can be susceptible. Have you seen or heard if it affects quail?
The thing about temp determining sex, I think may come from a nature film many years ago on T.V. However that was referring to Alligator eggs in the nest. Saw it many years ago here in U.K.
Awesome video! Can you please clarify one thing, though: did Zack say that the jumbos start slowing down egg production at 1 year AND 9 months, or did he mean around 9 months TO a year? Thanks!
My serama hen did better this time hatching quail eggs lol we got 7 chicks But we had to take them from her she still has big chicks in there with her So we had to watch the chicks and get the quail as they hatched Worked better than the cheap incubator i got to try
Zack is awesome! Chris, take a breathe and let Zack finish a thought. I think you allowed him to answer 2 questions, the rest of the time you sounded like you had to keep justifying why you do what you do.
I m looking into rasing Quail chickens and rabbits again. Price for feed is an issue. I currently have free access to corn ,wheat,Milo, and soybean. So ? Is what would be a good ratio of those grains to feed to my Quail and chicken. M asli building a fodder house. Do you have any suggestions.
Is it normal for quail to have alot more fat on them if they are more than a year old? When I changed out my layers I noticed alot more fat than the 7 to 8 week Olds that I normally processed. Is this normal or am I supposed to feed them an egglayer feed rather than the growout food
I would suggest starting out fairly small. Maybe a dozen birds. 10 hens and 2 roosters would be a good amount to start with. You can always grow from their very quickly.
am just saying the eggs do work, if you take the time to try, you may not get it right, but it work you know eggs is hen, you may not get 100% but you will get more hed.
Yeah birds can lay more than 1 egg a day.A guy I used to work with said hen layed 28 eggs in one day!!! Lololol 28 eggs was more than his hen weighed!!!
Anyone know why the roof a foot higher than the top of the cage? Also, "random man" and his commenters claim 100% success on sexing eggs: pointy ones are male.

Is there a way to grow bird food? Duck weed? I don't want to depend on store bought feed.
I credit Chris for a BIG part of my first-year success raising quail simply for his hutch build videos. Thank you, Chris! I house my birds outside in my yard. My two favorite resources in one video... I'm in quail nerd heaven! ❤️
I'm a quail nerd as well.. 😆
So true!
What do you feed you're quail? I've been using game bird feed but my egg shells are soft
@@AJayK610-18 I use sporting bird developer and provide free choice powdered egg shell and oyster shell nice hard shells
I feed 20% all flock and supplement with worms and insects
Nerding out over quail is my favourite thing!
Was NOT expecting Zach to pop up🤣
Love these collaborations!!!
Same!! I love it!! 😂😂
When Zach popped out I literally said “Oh Snap!” Out loud.

Its great to see collaboration like this in the community and we need more of it. Great work, info and respect from you both, thanks!
Two great channels for the independent/self reliant minded person.
How cool is this, two of my favorite quail channels collaborating. Thanks for all the info guys.

P.S. I wished that Zach would have told us more on his "mix" blend on food!😅
I transition to the dumor laying crumbles I get at tractor supply. It has a little more calcium than some of the other brand laying feed.
Awesome !
One of the top 10 best Anime crossovers
Lol i feed a mix
2 parts game bird starter

1 part chick starter
Non medicated

I love your coop but I thought you had to keep 1 male & a couple hens.

Hello myshire farm!
Im on a 30% game bird starter. What would you recommend giving my birds after they're 6 weeks old??
My flock is over two years old. They get chicken crumble. The bullies that are alone in pens, lay two eggs per day.
Is white paint practical for quail cages?
Zack is awesome! Chris, take a breathe and let Zack finish a thought. I think you allowed him to answer 2 questions, the rest of the time you sounded like you had to keep justifying why you do what you do.
I have a bad habit of talking too much. Thanks for the feedback. I will work on that.
I have to put straw in my quail cage due to a dog stopped by and pulled one of my quail's leg off.. Of course it was a rooster.. I was super mad

Perhaps they were thinking that it worked the same as tutrles, whose gender rate is temperature dependent.
Could you help me I would like to try this but I don't know everything I need and how many should start with.
I would suggest starting out fairly small. Maybe a dozen birds. 10 hens and 2 roosters would be a good amount to start with. You can always grow from their very quickly.
Can quail eat duckweed??
am just saying the eggs do work, if you take the time to try, you may not get it right, but it work you know eggs is hen, you may not get 100% but you will get more hed.
How many eggs get destroyed without a rollout cage? Percentage wise...anyone know?
I use solid floor cages with pine pellets for bedding. I don’t have eggs destroyed as long as calcium levels are correct.
@@bethreed3810 thanks for the data point!
I want to use 1/4" mesh for poop drop. Anyone know how well eggs would survive?
Poop doesn’t drop through 1/4”; you need 1/2” or 1/2”x1” for wire floors. Eggs survive just fine - they’re tougher than you think.
Yeah birds can lay more than 1 egg a day.A guy I used to work with said hen layed 28 eggs in one day!!! Lololol 28 eggs was more than his hen weighed!!!

He’s in an area where it gets very hot in the summer; the raised roof allows for air movement as well as a platform to set things on when needed.
@@bethreed3810 that makes sense! Thank you!
@@bethreed3810 But will rain get in? I guess that is why he has little box shelters inside.
Rain may blow in on the screened section but not the part with solid sides.
Just built my cage...and it a carbon copy of yours...
Nice. I hope it works as well for you as it has for me.
