    My STANDARD size Wild type gave me 9 gram eggs. Selective intense breeding program and a year and a half later I was getting 20 gram eggs, and much larger birds. I am sure you are mistaken about the jumbo "stock egg" size.

      Hi. How do you manage a breeding program? Do you have to keep being new males?

      @@danielscott606 Only set the largest eggs from the largest birds in the incubator. Replace smaller breeders with larger ones. Cull/eat all smallest birds, keep and breed the largest ones.

      I am thinking to change from Chickens ( hens and roosters) due to complaints from neighbors to Quail . Which meat is better in you opinion? Our chickens are 2+ years old and their meat is too rubbish or hard to consume. Also to butcher chickens I only do in summer I would like to do it year long with a softer better flavor meat. I would like you personal opinion. Thank you.

      @@mrjon75 He actually answered my question in last night’s live chat. He said that they are beautiful birds, good for meat and eggs, but slightly smaller than the Farro he prefers. Another breeder commented that he raises Egyptian too, and that there was no difference in size.

    So, I'm clueless. If you want the eggs, do you keep a rooster with the hens? Do you worry about fertile vs non-fertile eggs? If you need more birds, do you have a separate cage with breeders, or just incubate some of the eggs (assuming a rooster is with the hens)?

    • @queilayenner1280
      @queilayenner1280 2 года назад +1

      Same question here . I am in the transition from Chickens to Quail I want to learn some before I get into. Thank you 😊

    • @CrackerFL
      @CrackerFL Год назад +1

      You can have a cage with only hens for egg production, BUT you are missing out on $$. You can get 4 streams of income from quail/chickens. 1) Eggs for eating 2) Fertile eggs to sell for hatching 3)Live baby quail for sale 4) Meat.
      Yes, you need a separate cage with 4-5 hens and a rooster to breed for fertile eggs, so you can hatch your own. Another neat thing is you can buy fertile eggs from another farm. Then incubate those and add to the genetics of your flock.
      You only worry about fertile/infertile eggs when you're hatching.

    How many eggs does one pair produce per week/mo/whenever and are they always quiet, is the smell too much (urban) GG had them for meat but lived on a rural farm Thanks

    • @Sagewolf1975
      @Sagewolf1975 2 года назад +1

      The hens will typically lay 1 egg a day usually on average.The noise quail make is not all that loud. The males are louder than the females, but it is nowhere near as loud as a chicken rooster. The smell is not to bad if you keep the quail droppings dry. I periodically put a layer of pine shavings to help reduce the smell and control the fly population. Also I personally find it soothing to watch them after the political clowns get done talking their BS on the NEWS. So another reason to get quail for you. Hahahaha

      I haven't tried it myself (with quail) but I have heard some other people that have tried it saying that they didn't really like it. Their feedback was that it was hard to find the eggs and they felt like the birds are just too messy. Your experience might be different though and it may be worth a try.

    Very informative and much needed information! Especially in today's world with our scary future. I have a question for you. I noticed on the white bird it's beak was extremely long compared to some of the other birds you were showing. Do the beaks and nails of your breeders and egg layers, do they need to be trimmed? Another question that I have, is is there a specific breed that is more heat and cold tolerant than others? I live in the high elevations of Arizona so we get really hot summers and we get really cold Winters
