The movie just failed at everything an adaptation is. To say that it was inspired by the books is blasphemy. Without the name, it wouldn't even be remembered - that's how atrocious it is.

Right? I'm in the same boat. My mother bought me the movie way back in the day because she knew I liked high fantasy and saw a dragon on the cover art lol. This drew me to the books, which I have read several times in my life and which I have come to cherish. The Inheritance Cycle is one of my favourite literary works, and to see it so poorly represented in cinema... They should have waited until the rest of the saga was written and given it a more competent director with a bigger budget. It could have been amazing. Of course, in this period of remakes, bigger budgets, better technology, a shameless corporate willingness to do anything for big bucks, and prevalent criticism of cinema, there is always the chance we'll get an Eragon film franchise which does the books justice -- especially since Paolini is now working on another story set in Alagaesia. I won't get my hopes up, though.

If you think they're bad books, they're bad books. If you think they're good books, they're good books. The enjoyment of art -- or the lack thereof -- is entirely in the eye of the beholder. That's probably why people never run out of reasons to argue about it lol. If you wanted to establish a benchmark and then objectively argue its merits and issues Cinema Sins style, I'd be all for it. I won't let my appreciation for something stand in the way of recognizing its faults. Still, to entirely dismiss them as "pretty bad"... I admit, that's a bit discouraging. When I was in boarding school, my good friend entered a Montana writing competition and won a dinner date with Christopher Paolini.
After politely chatting about both their circumstances for a few minutes, my friend could not help but ask Paolini for his thoughts on the movie adaptation.
Long story short, Paolini despised the film as much as any other sane fan of the series.
I specifically remember he claimed Paolini was most disappointed with the Urgals being portrayed as juggalos minus the clown makeup.
((Bonus fun fact my friend learned on the dinner date: Paolini straight up eats plain butter as an appetizer. To heavily paraphrase the Paolini's stance on the expectation of eating your butter on bread (it's been a few years), "Early in my adolescence, I had it figured out that bread was nothing more than a vessel for butter, an unnecessary component, and I've never looked back".))

The director proudly bragged about all the changes he made from the source material because he honestly thought his ideas were "better" (despite the fact his changes completely altered the personalities of several characters, and made it impossible for the sequels to take place - the Ra'zac being killed off in this movie despite being a major part of the plot in the second book, for instance). I'm sure it sucks for him, but I'm not really surprised no one gave him another movie to direct because of that.

Also hope that the CGI next time for Saphira is actually up to par with the look of the dragons in the series and NOT like the movie that is a disgrace to all dragon movies out there. I agree. For starters Brom's Death YES it was similar but how it was in the book escaping to the desert with his body and in his dying breath reveals he was A ridder and his Dragon was named Siphira.Second Dragon did not meet Murtagh in the prison he met him after saving him from the ra'zac when they snuck up on them and knocked them out. And Garrow's death which was a emotionally driven factor in Eragon did not happen in the same was. What happened was that he was burned by a very corrosive acid and found in the rubble of his farm, and the only home he knew of. Brom's character was also not really the same and didn't make you feel as much for his death. when he died in the book I almost cried. When he died in the movie I laughed. Explaining how sapphire's egg ending up in the wood's didn't leave the mistory of why was it there. And left Ayra to be a character people try to figure out fully. and syphira's growth rate was waaaay to fast it took about a fortnight(2 weeks. NOT THE VIDEO GAME.) for her to be a decent growth size. not big enough to ride but not small enough to not be able to fly. AND ERAGON WAS NOT BREAKING HIS RIBS EVER 100 PAGES. my favorite part.also remember the shade you know the red head guy yeah. HE WAS NOT DEAD HE WAS IN A ANOTHER BATTLE WITH ERAGON AT THE END. I could literally point out so many things here that I hated that I could write a book that's story lasted for 497 pages of enjoyable content. and then make a good movie out of those 497 pages.(I need a girlfriend)

I cant describe in words how sad this movie makes me. I have a deep love for the inheritance cycle, it inspired me to start writing D&D quests for my friends, started my love for fantasy, and is one of my favorite fantasy stories of all time. And it hurts to see all the mistakes that they made (I still cant believe how one dimensional and boring Galbatorix is in this film. one of the elements that made him intimidating in the books was that he didn't say a single word until very late in the series, despite being its big bad. The only details available about him where whispered and fearful up until that point). I know that my enjoyment of the series is not a metric that gives it worth, nor is my sentimentality. But if this movie had actually been good, It might have become an amazing cinematic experience. I'm going to end this by being that guy, the books are almost always better, and they certainly are in this case.
