DEMON SLAYER Success is UNTHINKABLE to American Comic Book Publishers!

  • Demon Slayer manga sales have topped 100 MILLION COPIES... just in 2020 alone! And the Mugen Train movie continues to destroy Japanese box office records. American comic book publishers can't even begin to imagine this kind of runaway success. There's nothing even remotely close to manga sales levels in the West. Demon Slayer is such a pop culture phenomenon in Japan, that Japanese schoolchildren respect Tanjiro more than their own parents!

Demon Slayer made me binge watch all 26 episodes in one sitting with no sleep up until 6AM morning back in June of this year. It's that good and also has a kickass intro giving youtuber music cover 9+million views. Was sad that the movie got pushed back until next year for international release. Glad Clownfish recommended it. I asked my cousin for a second opinion as well and all he told me was go see it it's sick.

It is worldwide already long time. There is one flaw in America - manga, what has been published in Japan like 10 years and is very popular, gets licensed by publisher from USA. They release like 20% of it and drop it, even if it has good fanbase in USA.REason is- when they get their investment back and bit more they want move to next manga and get that bigger profit part what first books bring again bc long stories after beginning doesnt make SO big profit what they want and smaller, steady profit doesnt ineterst them. Publishers in USA doesnt get that manga has beginning and end, not like comics with what dropping isnt big issue. After consumers have been treated like this 2-3 times.....they give up bc it is nearly impossible to get whole story, so ther isnt point to start with new manga again and get disappointed again.BUT bc that one publisher licensed that manga - nobody else can publish it too bc somehow USA publishers doesnt sell their licenses to other companies.

That scene in one of the last chapters of the manga where Nezuko confronts Shinazugawa after she turns back in to a human is just great. It's implied that Nezuko has retained her memories of her journey with Tanjiro, so she most likely remembers him stabbing her, but she just makes smalltalk with him. He does apologize for what he did, but Nezuko just shrugs it off and they leave on good terms with Shinazugawa smiling and patting her on the head. That chapter got me to like Shinazugawa. Unlike many modern comic books, Demon Slayer understands compassion, empathy, and most of all kindness. Most people will probably say Tanjiro, (as a protagonist), is pretty vanilla, but his goal very relatable and shows how superheroes should be. Not looking for someone to hurt in the name of social justice, but helping others and protecting those that can't protect themselves. That kindness is also translated well with Nezuko. When Tanjiro becomes Demon King Tanjiro she's willing to go into the battlefield to try and stop Tanjiro from hurting everyone,( mind you, this is when Nezuko has been cured). This has more impact than Carl Manvers coming in with a bad nose job and saying, "Forget the phone, and lose the men." It shows that Nezuko cares for the people around her, even showing concern for Kanao after she gets fatally wounded trying to give the antidote to Tanjiro. Demon Slayer also does feminism better by making the girls in this series, smart, strong, and capable fighters while balancing that with kindness. Hell, one of the strongest characters Mitsuri, even joined the Demon Slayer Corps to find a husband who was stronger than her. She lives up to her title as "The Love Pillar" by maintaining a hopeless romantic approach to character, that really makes her endearing. Her own strength has been an obstacle for her to try and fall in love, and you really do want to root for her to succeed. The point in me bringing up Mitsuri, is that she's strong, but she also wants to fit in to the role of a wife. She wants to fall in love and start family. Women should be allowed to succeed in life, but they should also be allowed to marry and have children, if they want. To paraphrase Lois Griffin, (in one of the good seasons of Family Guy), if feminism is giving women a choice, and they choose to be housewives, then they should be allowed to be housewives.

Manga has always that old good MORAL / a lesson that can be derived from a story or experience/ in it, what western comics and animation has lost long time ago bc - "it might hurt young people " Young people know when they are belittled, they hate if they are treated like toddlers or brainless dolls, eh, adults hate it too. Also i agree that one writer/author/mangaka from start to end /even if it takes 10-20 years/ is bonus bc it keeps story and characters consistent and continuous. Comics has rarely long running story and if it has arks - there are dif. authors/writers/artists. Characters change sometimes too much and story often goes out of cannon or jumps around like rabbit - it is like not same thing anymore, makes you disappointed. aso aso aso

My problem with American comics is there is no consistent story, "i want to read batman, where do i start?" well there are like a billion different series and none of them matter because little to non of them move the story in any meaningful way, "What Alfred is killed by the joker!?" then why is he alive in the next series again? why should i get invested if actions and choices the characters make from one story to the next mean nothing why should i care?
"I want to read Demon Slayer where do i start?" Well you pick up volume one and then read it all the way the to current volume, My feeling is that Manga is kicking the crap out of American comics because of consistent story and character development, if a character dies they are dead (unless there is some form of resurrection magic,) and actually have an impact on the story or if a major event happens it has an effect on the entire story moving forwards, good examples of this are The Marineford Arc in One Piece or the end of The Golden Age Arc in Berserk they changed their world forever and had impact on the entire world and its characters, its wasn't just washed away in the next series run like it never happened like (most) American comics.

Along with this Comics and Manga are different seeing as manga relies on a lot less dialogue and anime has recently hit the mainstream. I say "almost always" because that is really the case, with DC/Marvels ongoing series they still are actually very intriguing and with Image Comics and Darkhorse bringing new titles and those indie scenes bringing new titles it's virtually one sided. The forefront of manga is sadly not that great, seeing as Shonen and Isekai dominate the medium. I like manga such as CSM, To your immortal, and record of ragnarok. Marvel's biggest figures made famous under Stan Lee & Jack Kirby were defined by their weaknesses as much as their super powers. And more people would get more entertainment to enjoy, and even get a lot more people into reading comics. But this companies and activistist just love to own and control everything. And they don't let competitors get recognised. Most people who were fans of the movies and games did not care or ever read a comic in their lives. They have many comics of hudreds of individual universes (marvel or DC) with their own stories. Most of them get canseled or never get continued. Every character has pretty much make out with each other. The stories have lost all meaning and literaly nothing matters at this point. Choises, consecuenses, who cares? Let's be honest, the Japanese authors know what their customers want (great story, without the SJW messages), and the sale numbers show this. This explains why there's more manga on my shelves than comics.
When the Japanese adapt a manga, we get great movies, Ghost in the Shell is a perfect example. When the yanks adapt a comic, we get complete and utter crap, Preacher is an example of this (I was able to watch 4 minutes of Preacher, about 1 and half scenes, before swearing I'd never watch comic adaptations again).

It is not hard to understand why Demon Slayer sells so well: It tells a story worth to be told, while modern American artists focus more on their personal agendas. Demon Slayer also has real characters, while modern American artists rather put self-insert characters in their comics. The characters in Demon Slayer also have flaws and are layered, while American comic book characters are written as perfect and flawless so that they can not offend anyone, and lastly, Demon Slayer is drawn really good, while most modern American comic books are drawn as cheap Steven Universe-look-a-like-Tumblr-characters.
American entertainment is doomed. And I'm not surprised by this at all. Young American artists can't create original stuff anymore because they are not allowed to form their own personalities and tastes, since social media and society dictates what they can and can't like. If you really want to become an artist, you really must form your own self as an individual. The second issue is also, that young American artists can't get inspired by modern art anymore, because everything looks now the same. Everyone just wants to create a show or comic that is like Steven Universe now. And if you just take this one show as an inspiration, you will never create something that will stick out. When I was younger I took inspiration from so many different cartoons, comic books, mangas, animes, webcomics, movies, books, posters, music, and even outdoor activities.
This is my recommendation to all young American artists out there: Form your own characters and taste, read many books about art and storytelling, take online lessons, and please, for the love of God, stop using Steven Universe as your only inspiration. Trust me, if you take inspiration from many different sources, your art is likely to end up as good, and something really special.

Manga is so willing to try literally ANYTHING. Any one story has a major chance to succeed as long as it's well written and get's the proper exposure. A horror action story about a kid who eats demon fingers and kills curses? Sure. What about a love story between a beautiful highschool student and her goofy massive boyfriend? Yup. What about just three girls hanging out in a weird highschool? Why not!? Magical girls.....duh.

Funnily enough another series has trends similar to what demon slayer had, its looking like Japan has found what the current audience wants to see. Unlike the west that continues to ignore their audiences.

Geeky: "That's like going head to head with a dump truck."
    Me: *thump*
Wife walks in and sees me rolling on the floor laughing.
    Wife: "Um.... are you okay?"
Wife walks out, shaking her head, when I can't catch my breath to answer.

13:50 to be fair the gag is "consensual", the box is her "safespace" against sunlight and the hipnosys ended up not working (her mind was already free of the demon king control)

Folks, this is the difference between a society that still encourages reading, and one that does not. Cripes, this is something covered in 'Understanding Comics' better part of a couple decades ago.

America hasn't had a single cartoon or TV show to compare against Japanese anime since the original teen Titans the Justice league and the one Justice league where it focuses on their children
